In the use of the ordinary scrubbing machine having detachable brushes universally mounted in the machine, considerable noise is occasioned where the brushes are loose upon the driving shafts, due to the free movement of the parts when the machine is operated. The instant invention overcomes this disadvantage by providing an attaching device through which the brush is yieldably mount ed in the device in a manner to prevent clattering or rattling.
For the purpose of illustrating our invention, I have shown a scrubbing machine in Fig. 1, which is indicated in its entirety at 10. This machine comprises a body member 11, which is provided with a handle 12 issuing outwardly therefrom and which is further provided with supporting wheels, 13 and 14. Upon the body 11 is mounted an electric motor 15 which has attached to the armature shaft thereof, a spur pinion 16. This pinion is adapted to drive two spur gears 17 which are rigidly secured to shafts 18 and 19, journaled in bearings 20 carried by the body 10. The shafts 18 and 19 extend outwardly beyond these hearings to provide studs 21 upon.

The spur pinion 16 meshes with one or the other of the two gears 17, which in turn mesh with one another, causing the two shafts 18 and 19 to rotate in opposite directions. The brushes 22 and 23 are preferably constructed triangular in form, so that the same intermeshand completely cover the sweep of the machine; Both of the brushes 22 and 23 are detachably mounted upon the shafts 18 and 19. These brushes and the attaching devices therefor being identical in construction, only the brush 23 and the device. associated therewith will be described .in detail.
The brush 23 may be of'any suitable construction j F or the purpose of illustration, the brush has been shown as constructed with a wood. or similar back 24, having bristles 25 mounted therein in the usual manner. The back 24 as previously stated, is triangular in form and is provided at the center thereof with a hole 26 which extends completely through the same and is of somewhat larger dimensions than the stud :21. ' 20. A casting 28 is secured to the stud '21 ad- .j acent to the shoulder '29 and may be held in place upon said shaft by any suitable means. This casting is formed with athree cornered portion 30 at the lower end thereof terminating in a spherical shoulder 31 The triangular portion 30 ofthis castingi'is adapted to be received within a triangular hole 32, formed in a flanged plate 33, secured to the upper surface of back 24 of brush 23 through I ordinary lwood screws 34. This plate is contrally secured with respect to the hole 26 in brush 23, so that the triangular portion -30--of casting 28 may form a'drive for rotating said brush. I i V In the application of the brush to the machine, the back 24 rests against the rounded shoulder 31 of casting 28. In the construction of the brush, both the hole 26 aiid 'the triangular opening 32 are considerably larger than the parts fitting within the same, so that the brush may have universalmovement with respect to the shaft 19 to cause the brush-to conform to the surface along which it-travels. In this mannerthe brush is causedto fit flat 35' upon the floorregardless ofthe length ;Of the bristles 25 and also independently of irregularities in the floor.
Our invention proper comprises a device for detachably securing the brush upon the stud 21,. which device comprises a keeper shown in detail in Fig. 6 and indicated in its entirety at 35. This keeper consists of a compression coil spring having two or more convolutions 36, which spring is provided at one end thereof with aportion 37, bent from the end of one of the convolutions 36 to extend diametrally across the spring. This member serves as a tongueand is used for attaching the keeper to the stud 21. For this purpose, the stud 21 is provided with a transverse slot :38, opening laterally of the stud .21 as indicated .at 3,9 and extending in an ob'liquemanner, as best shown in Fig. 5, to cause the inner end thereof'to be disposed at a distance fromthe shoulder 31,,greater than thedistanceof the outer portion thereof fromsaid shoulder, which portion is designated by the reference numeral' 39. The use of our invention is as follows: When .it is desired to mount the brushin the machine, the machine is inverted and the brush slipped over the stud 21 with the casting 28 extending into the opening32 of plate 33-and with the stud .21 extending through the opening 26. This is readily accomplished, since the parts fit looselyv within said openings. 7 The spring-36 isinext placed with .in the recess 27 with the portion41 thereof contacting with the portion 40 ofthe back 24 within said recess. Keeper 35 is next compressed .by applying pressure to the tongue 37.; At the sametime, the tongue 37 is moved laterally until the samerclears the stud 21. When the keeper 35 has beensufiiciently compressed, the tongue 37.1nay be inserted into the slot 38 through the open end 39 thereof. Upon releasing the keeper, tongue 37'becomes lodged within the inner end of said slot and due to the oblique disposition of said vslot, is firmly maintained within the same through finger 50. V The machine is now ready for use and the "brushes held in place upon the'studs 21 through the keepers '35."

the. compression in -;the spring 35 forces the same outwardly, which completely disengages said tongue from the stud 21. The brush and spring may now be independently or jointly removed from the device.
The slots 38 in the stud 21 may be constructed by milling the end of said stud in the manner shown, the milling cutter being positioned obliquely with respect to the axis of the shaft 19. The slot 38 Ina also be constructed as shown in Fig. 7- by first drilling a round hole 42 in the end of the stud 21 and by then milling a slot 43 in said stud, communicating with said hole at one side thereof to leave a shoulder 44 therebetween. In this case the milling cutter may be disposed at right angles to the shaft. The shoulder 44 in this form of the invention, serves the same purpose as the inclination in the slot 38 and prevents the tongue 37 from being unintentionally disengaged therefrom.
The advantages of our invention are manifest. The device is extremely simple in construction and can be manufactured at a nominal cost. The device is quite easy to apply and remove and does not require tools of any nature whatsoever for this purpose. When the device has been applied, the brush is yieldingly held in proper position and when so held, clattering or any noise ordinarily produced in the operation of similar devices is prevented. The brushes may be used until the bristles are worn down to the back, if desired, and without procuring any undesired noise or other disadvantages.
Changes in the specific form of our invention as herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of our invention.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to protect by its patent is:
1. In combination with a stud, a stop on said stud, a member on said stud movable toward and from said stop, a resilient keeper on said stud for urging said member against said stop and means on said keeper to releasably en gage said stud for holding the member detachably mounted upon said stud.
2. In combination with a stud, a stop on said stud, a member on said stud movable toward and from said stop, a resilient keeper on said stud for urging said member against said stop, a tongue on said keeper, said stud having a laterally extending opening for the reception of s. id tongue, said tongue being movable into and out of said opening.
3. In combinatien with stud, a stop on said stud, a member on said stud movable toward and from said stop, a resilient keeper on said stud for urging said member against said step, a tongue on said keeper, said stud having a laterally opening slot adapted to receive said ton ue, said tongue being laterally movable into and out of said slot.
4. In combination with a shaft, a member axially slidable on said shaft, a stop 011 said shaft for engagement with said member for limiting axial movement of said member, a compression coil spring encircling said shaft and urging said member against said stop, said shaft having a socket opening laterally thereof and a tongue on said spring movable laterally into engagement with said socket for holding said spring in engagement with said member.
5. In combination with a stud, a stop on said stud, a member on said stud movable toward and from said step, a coil spring encircling said stud forurging said member against said stop, the end of said spring being bent to form a diametrally extending tongue, said stud having a transverse laterally opening slot for the reception of said tongue.
6. In combination with a stud, a stop on said stud, a member on said stud movable toward and from said stop, a coil spring encircling said stud for urging said member against said stop, a slot formed in said stud transversely thereof and opening in a lateral direction, said slot being oblique with respect to the axis of said stud and a diametral tongue on said spring for lateral insertion into said slot.
7. In combination with a stud, a stop on said stud, a member on said stud movable toward and from said stop, a coil spring encircling said stud for urging said member against said stop, said stud having a slot formed therein extending transversely thereof and opening in a lateral direction, said slot having a portion at the end thereof, a greaterdistance from said stop than the open end of said slot and a tongue on said spring for en gagement with said slot.
8. In combination with a stud, a stop on said stud, a member on said stud movable toward and from said stop, a resilient keeper on said stud for urging said member against said stop, said stud having a transversely disposed slot opening laterally thereof, the inner end of said slot being a greater distance from said stop than the open end of said slot and meanson said keeper for engagement within said slot.
9. In combination'with a stud, a stop on said stud, a member on said stud movable toward and from said stop, a resilient keeper on said stud for urging said member against said stop, said stud having a transverse slot extending partially'through the same, and beyond the axis thereof, and a diametrally extending tongue on said keeper for engagement with said slot, said tongue being adapted to intersect the axis of said stud when in normal position.
10. In combination with a stud, a stop on said stud, a member onsaid stud movable toward and from said stop, a compression .coilspring enclrclmgsaid stud and adapted to urge said member against said stop, said stud having a laterally extending opening, a tongue on said spring movable'into and out of said opening, said spring being of a size V such that the difference between the internal diameter of said spring and the lateral dimension of said stud in the direction of movement of said tongue is greater than the length of the movementof said tongue;
11. In combination with a stud, ai-stop on said stud, a member on said'stud movable v toward and from said stop, a coil spring encircling said stud and spaced therefrom, said stud having a laterally opening transverse slot,- a tongue extending diametrally from said spring for lateral movement into and out of engagement with said slot,.said atongue projecting outwardly beyond said stud on both sides thereof to provide finger pieces for engagement with the fingers of the user in the movement of the tongue into and out of said slot. In combination with a brush shaft of a scrubbing machine having a shoulder thereon and a free end extendingoutwardly therefrom and provided with spring engaging means, a brush having a body fitting loosely over the free end of said shaft and adapted "to engage said shoulder'and having a recess 1n the outer portion thereof to form a seat and a compression coil spring seated in said seat and against said sprlng engaging means to urge the brush bodyagainst the shoulder. r 16.
