The invention has a special utility in connection with a road finishing machine, al-
though it is applicable to other types of road l making machines as well.
In making concrete or similar roads, the
material is ordinarily deposited on the road bed foundation and is then struck off or spread by a screed member, which member also may be adapted to give the road an approximate crowned surface. The road is us- -ually then rolled to smooth out irregularities, eliminate air pockets or the like in the material, and to compress the material into a smooth compact mass. Since both the screed member and theroller usuall are adapted to impart a crown to the T0 surface, these members, as well as certain other members sometimes provided upon road making machines and used in road building operations,
as desired crown to the road. As the crowns which are given to different roads vary to a considerable extent in degree, a different machine must be used for forming the different degree crowns, or either the curvature of the members or their path of operative movement must be made adjustable so as to adapt the members to form the desired crown. In present practice crowns are varied by adjustment of the members themselves, or of the elements which guide the path of movement of such members, at several points by means of threaded members individually adjustable. It is a slow process and, unless adjustment is made to a template, especially cut for the purpose, any change of crown by means of indi vidual adjustments cannot be perfectly made without individual checking at each point.
An object of this invention is to provide means in a machine of the type specified whereby any degree of crown, mathematically correct at all oints, may be obtained and the necessity of rechecking after adjustment eliminated.
Another object of the invention is to pro- 50 vide a road making machine which has a member adapted to impart a crown to the road surface with means for readily, uickly, accurately and easily efiectin a justments whereby such member will be capable of imparting crowns of diflerent degree, as desired, to the roads surface.
-' There have-been machines with finishin members spanning a roadway which could be adjusted at a single point, usually midway of its ends, but under present-day specifica tions, which usually call for an accurate parabolic or similar type of crown, adjustment at a single pointis not sufficient in the width of roadway now used to adjust the crown accurately to, as for example, a parabolic formula. Therefore, de ending upon the width of the roadway, tiiree, five or seven more points of adjustment may be necessary to flex a member close enough to a specified crown for practical purposes.
Hence, another object is to provide a road making machine of this character with a lurality of means controlled simultaneously rom a single point for effecting such adjustments as will render the member capable of imparting crowns of different degree and particularly parabolic crowns to a roadway.
A further object is to provide a road making machine, which has a roller extendin longitudinally of the roadway and adapte to operate transversely thereof to compress the material and to impart a crown thereto, with means for varying, in an expeditious manner, the curvature of the path of movement of the roller, whereby the roller ma impart crowns of different degree to the road s surface. g a
A still further object is to provide a road making machine, which has a roller extend ing longitudinally of the roadway and 90 adapted to operate transversely thereof to compress the material and to impart a crown thereto, with means for varying, in an expeditious manner, the curvature of each guide for the opposite ends of the roller, whereby the roller may impart crowns of different degree to the roads surface.
A still further object is to provide a road making machine having a roller of the character set forth, with means for varying simul- 100 taneously by a single controlling member and to the same extent the curvature of both ofnthe guides supporting the ends of the ro er.
Another object is to provide in a road making machine means for automatically indicating the degree of crown which the machine is adjusted to impart to the roads surface. I

In the accompanying drawings the invention is shown, by way of illustration, as embodied in a road rolling machine, but it should be understood that in its broader aspects it could be embodied in a screedmachine or in any other similar road making or finishing machines.

The road rolling machine comprises a frame which supports the driving and road working elements of the machlne and is adapted to be moved bodily in either direction longitudinally of the roadway upon tracks 1 which constitute the usual side forms for the concrete or other material 1a. The frame includes main frame members, indicated generally in Figs. 1, 2-and 3 by the numeral 2, arranged at the front and rear of the machine and extending transversely of the roadway, such frame members being connected by members extending longitudinally of the roadway .therebetween as well as by diagonally arranged members. While the main frame members may be in the form of integral channels, or in any other suitable form, they are shown herein asbuiltup channels, each of which is formed of a vertically arran ed web plate 3, as shownin Figs. 4, 5 an 6, which plate extends entirely across the machines and has inwardly.

There are fourof these frame members 5 shown in the drawings but, of course, it should be .un-. derstood that an desirable number thereof might be used, t e two outer members being connected to the twoinner members by diagonal frame members 10 secured to the gusset plates 6 and 9.
At the front of the machine a frame member ll-parallel with the main frame member 2 but spaced inwardly thereof, extends between the two inner frame members 5 and is connected .to the gus'set plates 9, while at the rear end of the machine the frame members 12 and13 are similarly arranged and are connected to the gusset plates 8. This last described arrangement provides a support for the platform which carries the driving mechanism for the machine as well as providing supports for the bearin of some of the operative arts of the mac ine.
As a ready stated, the machine is adapted to move in either direction longitudinall of the roadway and for the purpose of e fecting such movement, as well as for the purpose of effecting the operation of the roller, a suitable motor or other source of power 14 is arranged on the frame adjacent the front of the machine, which motor is connected through a change speed gearin 15 controlled by a lever 16 to shafts 17 an 18, the first of which is provided with a clutch 19 controlled by a lever 20 and the second of which is also provided with a clutch controlled by the lever 21. The shaft 17 is arranged at the front of the machine beyond the main frame member 2 being supported in forwardly extending brackets 22 secured to the web late 3 of the frame member by an-' gle brac ets 23. The shaft 17 is provided with a plurality of driving'connections 24,
for a purpose well understood and carries upon each opposite end a wheel 25 which travels upon the tracks or forms 1. At the rear of the machine, supporting brackets 26, similar to the brackets 22, are secured to the web plate 3 of the main frame member and extend rearwardly therefrom, such brackets supporting short shafts 27 which carry attheir outer ends, wheels 28, also engaging the tracks or .forms 1 and traveling thereon.

Eeroximately at the middle of the frame memrs, the other two guides being arranged intermediate the middle guide and the two outer guides respectivel It is, of course, understood that the guldes on each frame member align with the corresponding guides on the other frame member so that uniform adjustment of the two channels 32 will be possible.
The members 35 extend upwardly above the top of the channels 32 and inwardly over the top thereof and have at their upper ends an enlarged cylindrical portion 36 which fits between the arms of a yoke 37 carried by a threaded sleeve 38 and is held in the yoke by a pin 39. Each of the threaded sleeves 38 receive bolts 40, which bolts extend upwardly through the angles 4 of .the main frame members 2 and through threaded bearing members 41 carried by the upper side of the main frame members. The two outermost bolts on each frame member are provided with a squared head or other suitable wrench-receiving means 42 so that they may be adjustably positioned in their respective bearings 41. These bolts are also provided on their upper end with suitable lock nuts 43 so that they may be maintained in their position of adjustment.
The three intermediate bolts on each of the main frame members is provided on its upper end with a bevel gear 45; each of said gears cooperating with a pinion 46 arranged on shafts 47 and 48 mounted, respectively, at the rear and front of the machine in bearing supports carried by the main frame members. The shaft 49 mounted in suitable bearings arranged upon the platform portion of the machine extends between the two shafts 47 and 48 and carries at its opposite ends pinions 50'which mesh with pinions 51 carried by the shafts 47 and 48. 'At the front of the machine upon the platform portion a verticall extending supporting frame 52 is arrange which frame is provided adjacent its upper end with a bearing supporting a short shaft 53 which carries on its forward end a sprocket 54 and on its inner end a hand wheel 55, the sprocket 54 being connected by a sprocket chain 56 to a sprocket 57 keyed on the shaft 49. It will thus be'obvious that when the hand wheel 55 isrotated that the shaft 49 will also be rotated and, in turn,
the shafts 47 and 48. The rotation of these last-named shafts will, of course, rotate the bolts 40 in their threaded bearings through the pinions 46 and gears 45 and will cause the sleeves 38 secured .on the bolts to be raised or lowered and, in turn, tend to pull up or push down the channel 32. Since the movement of the bolts 40 must vary according to its relative position with r'es ect to the channel 32 so that the proper egree of curvature may be imparted to said channel, the threads of such bolts will, of course, be of different pitch in accordance with the position in which the bolt is to be used. It might be well to state at this time that instead of using bolts of different thread itch that the 7 same result could be obtained y using different gear ratios.
In order to move the roller 29 backwar'dly' and forwardly transversely of the roadway,
the roller is provided with an operative connection to the shaft 18 which, as previously set forth, is driven by the motor 14. The shaft 18 carries a sprocket 58 on each end thereof while an automatic reversing mechanism 59 is arranged intermediate the ends of bracket member 64 arranged on each of the roller spindles 30 intermediate the guide roller 31 andthe end of the' roller 29. It will thus be seen that when the shaft 18 is rotating in one direction that each of the chains 62 will be moved by its sprocket 58 and that the roller 29. will be pulled by the chain and moved with its guide rollers 31 riding in the channels 32. The automatic reversing mechanism 59 is so adjusted as to automatically reverse the rotation of the shaft 18 when the roller 29 reaches its limit of movement in either direction. Thus so long as the clutch for the shaft 18 is in the operating position, the roller 29 will continue to move backwardly and forwardly transversely of the road moved across the face of the dial by the "be based upon a shaft 67.. The graduatious upon the dial may fixed setting at the ends of the trackway with the result that the deflection of the middle point of the trackway above the horizontal line between the two ends thereof will correspond to the crest of the crown and may be expressed in any desired units, such as inches.
In adjusting the curvature of the channels 32 so that the path of movement of the roller 29 will be such as to form the desired I crown upon the road, the bolts at each end of each channel are turned by means of a wrench or other suitable tool applied to the ends 42 of the end bolts until the ends of the channels are properly positioned to enable the roller to engage the road at the level of the forms 1 when it is at each end of its reciprocation transversely of the road. The bolts 40 may then be locked in such position of adjustment by means of the lock nuts or similar means 43. The hand wheel 55 is then turned by the operator with the result that rotation of the shaft 49 through its operative connection with the shafts 47 and 48 will rotate the latter shafts and, in turn, the intermediate bolts 40 through the bevel gears s and pinions 46. This rotation of the intermediate bolts 40 will, according to their direction of rotation, either raise the intermediate portion of the channels 32 or will tend to depress the same. The action of the bolts upon the channels, which are fixed at theiropposite ends, is such that the channels will be flexed into the proper curvature for imparting a curved path of movement to the roller to enable it to form the desired crown on the road. The operator will be .able'to tell from the indicating dial 66 when the proper curvature has been given to the channels.
It will be seen that the channels 32 are free to slide vertically on the web plates 3 of the main frame members 2 since they are secured thereto by the T-heads 34 sliding in guide-.
ways 33, while they are held by the same means against movement laterally of the frame members. Once the end plates have been adjusted, the operator simply needs to i turn the hand wheel 55 in the desired direction and in the desired amount to procure adjustment for the crown which is to be imparted to the road. As soon as the necessary crown adjustment has been procured the operating mechanism for the roller is set into action and the roller in its transverse reciprocation of the roadway will compress the material and form the desired crown on the such machines within the scope of the append ed claims.
Having thus described my claim:
1. In a machine of the character described, road engaging means adapted to impart a crown to the road, a plurality of adjustable means for causing said first-named means to invention, 1
impart crowns of different degree to the road,
and a single means for operating said secondnamed means.
2. In a machine of the character described, road engaging means adapted to impart a crown to the road, a plurality of adjustable means for causing said first-named means to impart crowns of different degree to the road, and means for simultaneously operating said second-named means.
3. In a machine of the character described, a road engaging member reciprocable transversely of the roadway and adapted to impart a crown surface thereto, adjustable means for causing said member to impart crown surfaces of difierent degree to the road, and means for simultaneously operating said last-named means from a single operating station.
4. In a machine of the character described, a road engaging member reciprocable transversely of the roadway and adapted to impart a crown surface thereto, means including a plurality of adjustable members for causing said road engaging member to impart crown surfaces of different degree to the road, and means for simultaneously operating said adjustable members.
5. In 'a machine of the character described, a road engaging member reciprocable transversely of the roadway and adapted to impart a crown surface thereto, means including a plurality of adjustable members for causing said road engaging member to impart crown surfaces of different degree to the road, and a single means for simultaneously operating said adjustable members.
6. In a machine of the character described, a road engaging member reciprocable transversely of the roadway and adapted to impart a crown surface thereto, means including a plurality of adjustable members for causing said road engaging member to impart Ill - point on the frame for changing crown surfaces of difierent degree to the road, and a common means havin an o rative connection with said adjustab e mem rs for simultaneously operating said members.
7 In a machine of the character described a frame adapted to move longitudinally of the roadway, a road engaging member reciprocable transversely of the roadway andsupported by said frame and adapted to impart a crown surface to the road, means for cansin said member to impart crown surfaces of di erent degree to the road, and means operable from a single point on said frame for operating said last-named means.
8. In a machine of the character described a frame adapted to move longitudinally of the roadwa a roller reciprocable trans: versely of e roadwa and adapted to impart a crown surface t ereto, means on said frame for guiding the path of movement of said roller, and means operable from a single said lastnamed means to change the pat of the roller to impart different crowns to the roadway.
9. In a machine of the character described, a frame, a surfacing member reciprocable 'transversely of the roadwa and adapted to impart a crown surface t ereto, means on said frame for supportmg said member and for determining the path of movement of the be same, means for chan 'ng the shape of said last-named means to a ter the path of movement of the member, and means for operating said second-named means from a single point on the frame.
10.- In a machine of the character described, a frame, a surfacing member reciprocable transversely of the roadway and adapted to impart a crown surface thereto, means carried by the frame and extending transversely of the roadway for supportin the opposite ends of said member and eterminmg the path of movement thereof, means for adjusting each of said last-named means to vary the curvature thereof, and means for simultaneously operating each of said second named means.
11. In a machine of the character de.- scribed, a frame, a member arranged at each end of the frame and extending transversely of the roadway, a roller extending between said members and having its opposite ends 'movably supported thereby to reciprocate movement.

13. .In a machine of the character described, a frame, a pair of members adjustably supported thereby, one of said members being arranged at one end of the frame and the other at the o posite end of the frame, a roller extending etween said members and supported thereby and adapted to recipro-v cate transversely of the roadway to impart a crown surface thereto, means for changing the curvature of said members and a common means for operating said last-named means.
14. In a machine of the character described, a frame, a guide member arranged at each end of the frame and vertically movable thereon, means for adjusting in fixed osition the opposite ends of said guide memers, means intermediate the ends of said guide members for flexing the same to diferent curvatures, and a single means for operating said last-named means and simultaneously flexing both of said guide memrs. 15. In a machine of the character described, a frame, a pair of members spaced laterally of each other and extending transversely of the roadway, a roller extending between said'members and having its opposite ends movably sup orted thereby to reciprocate transversely o the roadway and impart a crown surface thereto, means for changing the curvature of each of said mem-- bers to enable said roller to impart crowns I of different degree, and means for operating each of said last-named meansfrom a single point on the frame.
16. In a machine of the character described, a frame, a guide member arranged on "said frame and vertically movable thereon,
means for adjusting in fixed position the oposite ends of said guide member, means intermediate the ends of said guide member for flexing the same to different curvatures, and a common means for operating said last named means.
17. In a machine of the character described, a frame, a pair of channel members arranged on said frame and extendin transversely of the road, means for adjusting the opposite ends of each of said channel members and for holding the same in adjusted position, a plurality of means intermediate the ends of each of the channel members for flexing the same and changing the curvature scribed, a frame, a pair of spaced channel members slidably arranged on said frame but held against lateral movement, means for holding the opposite ends of said channel members in various fixed positions of adjustment, means intermediate the ends of said channel members for adjustably raising or lowering the same to cause a flexure thereof, and means simultaneously and uniformly flexing said channel members.
19. In a machine of the character described, a frame, a pair of spaced members carried thereby, a plurality of threaded bolts connected to each of said members and rotatable in threaded bearings on the frame,
means for adjusting the bolts adjacent each end of the said members and locking the same in adjusted position, gears arranged on the ends of each of the bolts intermediate the end bolts, a shaft adjacent each member provided with a plurality of gears cooperating with the gears on the bolts, and a common means for rotating both of said shafts to simult-aneously rotate said intermediate bolts to flex said members to change the curvature thereof.
20. In a machine of the character described, a frame, aguide member arranged on said frame andvertically movable thereon, means for adjusting in fixed position the opposite ends of said guide member, a plurality of means intermediate the ends of said guide member for flexing the same to difl'erent curvatures, a common means for operating said last-named means, and an indicating device associated with one of said flexing means to indicate the-degree of curvature of said guide member. v
