Description

G. MYERS TOY Filed Aug. 4, 1951 INVENTOR Gilbert M e WITNESSES BY Cy r5) M vii.
ATTORN EY Patented Aug. 30, 1932 var.
GILBER names, (or BOISE, inane ll'OY device has also the double 'functionof a steering device when the toy-is used asacoaster. I
A further object of the invention is to pro= vide a toy of the type describedin-which the rotary movement isaccomplishedwithin a minimum space, thereby making the 9;; toy available for indoor as-wellas-outdooruser- A further object otthe invention isto'prm vide a device havingrelativelyfewflpartsbut of strong construction so that it is not easily gotten outof ordfili Other objects andad-vantages will appear in the following specification and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming partof this application, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of one embodimcnt of my invention,
Figure 2 is a bottom view of the main board or seat, the legs being broken away and the actuating shaft being shown in section, and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal'sectional view of a portion of the device.
In carrying out my invention I provide an elongated board or seat 1 of the shape shown in the drawing. Near the rear end of this seat are secured legs 2 and 3, respectively. These legs as it will be observed extend at right angles to each other. They are held preferably by means of a metal plate 4 which is se-- cured to the legs, as shown in Fig. 3. A bolt 5 passes through the seat and is held by a nut 6 which bears on the plate 4. Screws 7 secure the plate in position and additional screws 8 may be made use of in order to hold the legs rigidly to the seat.
Secured to the front end of the seat and on 1931i sergiai Ilia, 5,065.
the -underside thereof, isa ,block9 of woodor other suitablematerial and this block has running therethrough a sleeve 10 which is lowerportion-ofthe blockq9 by means of sleeve has a flange 11 which is secured to the screws-12.; The sleevelO extends through' the sea t l "and terminates in a headed portion'1'3:
thesea-t on the upper portioirthereof. The sleeve 10 passes through this ring.
A shaft 15 passes through the sIeeVe'IO-and thefla-nge 11 at the bottom of the sleeve which is secured to the -underside of the block 9.
- 'Ihe' shaft 15' is bent laterally at 16; then up--" 'wardly at' .17, then laterally at 18' and 'upe *wardly at 19. That portion of the shaft 15* between the bends 18 and the central axis of the sleeve 10. Handles 17 V and 19* are provided. I
consisting of a frame 20 loosely secured-to the 19 extends beyond,
einforcing ringlt of metal'is securedto is provided with a flange 16 whichhear's on At the bottonr'of the shaft 15is a device shaft i-n an-y suitable manner as by a bo1t21.
Th'i's frameis"provided with four :whee1s' 22;
The legs2"and 3 haveat their extremities casterwheels'2 -and3 respectively: -These' wheels may be of anysuitable type and may i be'rubber-tired as shown'in the drawing. Fromthe foregoing description of the various partdof-the device the operation'the're'of may. be readily i understood. V. The shaft 15 constitutes'a crank The child sits OIl'thG seat 1 and grasps the handles 17 and 19%; Now
when force is used in anefi'ort to turn; the
shaft. 15, the friction created by thefpressure ofQthe wheels 220m the groundor floor-will tendtooppose, this rotation. The seat of the operator islocated sothat the weightlottheoperator: is exerted well inside the twotouter pointssofi support, -.thus increasing the trio- I tion betyveen the Wheels 22 and the ground- 1 Conti-nued'pressurfe-on the handles failsato r olve theshaft-15 but results" rather that: instead. of" the crank being turned, thetiseat willaitselfsrvolve about the axis 015 theshaftf 15 and thus the child-may" rotateswhimselfaroun.d- =as-*-long= as he continues to exert theturning pressure on the crank. The caster I wheels 2 and in will accommodate themselves j to this rotary movement.
Another feature which attends'to lend to the easy rotation of the seat and the occupant is that the counteracting weight of the operators legs when supported alongside of the crank housing further tends to increase the friction at the bottom of the crank and proportionately decreasesfriction at the outer ends of the supporting legs.
of the term when it is being used to cause the rotary movementabout the axisof the shaft r of rotation will also be' reversed. 7
The device is capable of being revolvediin either direction. By exerting a turning force on the handles 17 and 19 in one direction, the occupant of the car as well as the car itself will be rotated and-on reversing the direction of the rotating force the direction Qne advantage of the device 1s that it can be instantly used in the manner of coaster I and then the crank becomes a steering means and the device-maybe pushed forwardly in;
a straight lineas with theordinary coaster and steered 'with the handle 19". The castersf2 and3flwill align themselveswith the wheels 22. 1 I l I claim: 7 V
