Application filed August 20, 1927. Serial No. 214,286.
My invention relates to a container cover and the broad object of the invention is to provide a cover which can be conveniently and quickly placed over the open end of a container body.
Another object of my invention is to provide a container cover which can be fastened over the open end of a container carton without crimping.
Another object of my invention is to provide a container cover which is held in place over the open end of a carton by means of a rin which clamps the cover to the carton.
0t or objects of the invention together with the foregoing will be set forth in the following description of my preferred embodiment of means for practicing the invention, and which is illustrated in the drawing accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is to be understood that I do not limit myself-to the showing made bysaid description and drawing, as I may adopt variations of m preferred form'within the scope of my invention as set forth in the claims.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my container body and cover therefor, with a portion broken away to more clearly show the method of assembly.
Figure 2 is a plan view of my cover.
In terms of broad inclusion my invention com rises a container cover held in place at t e end of a container body by means of a ring which clamps the cover against a surface of the body. In order to prevent crimping of the cover upon being placed on the carton, the edge thereof is serrated, and the surface of the cover adjacent the serrations is scored, so that the serrations can be easily ent.
More specifically, my invention comprises a cover 2 which is preferably stamped in the form of a circle out of a sheet of stiff fibrous material such as heavy paper board. The edge of the cover'is serrated so as to provide projections or serrations 3; while the surface 4 adjacent the serrations is scored to permit bendin thereof without crimping. However if a lig tor and more easily bendable sheet of material is used the serrations may be omitted, and only the surface of the cover near the edge is scored; so that the portion between the score and edge may be bent to provide a single projection.
Figure 1 shows the cover on the end of a container body 6, preferably a cylindrical tube of stiff fibrous material. By means of the bent serrations or projections 3, the cover is held between the inside surface of the body and a clamping ring 7 adjacent said surface, and which is also of paper board. Although the cover, may be held over the outside surface of the container by means of a ring therearound, it is preferably located adjacent the edge and inside surface of the body, and with the ends of the serrations being within end planes of said ring, so that stitching 8 may be applied to secure the elements together.
From the above, it is seen that when the cover is placed within the open end of a container body, it will not become crimped or torn, since the notches caused by the serrated edge compensate for the shortening of the circumference to that of the inside of the container, while the scored surface adjacent the serrations permits them to be bent so as to lie flush against the inside surface in order that the ring can be placed adjacent the serrations and inside surface, and thus hold the cover between it and the container.
I With reference to the drawing, it is seen that the cover 2 is provided with a centrally disposed aperture 9. This aperture permits equalization of air pressure on the inside and outside of the container body 6, thus facilitatin the removal of the cover when it is taken ofl the container body. Also the aperture in the cover permits the circulation of air in the container, consequently if an article such as a linoleum rug is held in the container and if the article is not thoroughly dr the air will effect complete drying thereo I claim: 1. The combination with a container body and a ring adjacent the inside surface thereof, of a cover having bent serrations held bethe cover, ring and body.
2. A container body for floor covering having an end provided with a rin adjacent the inside surface thereof, a cover swing a portion thereof held between the ring and body, I and stitching passingxhrough the cover, ring and body for securing these elements together.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
WILLARD H. NUTTING.
