of any character for positively delivering oil to parts to be lubricated and my primary object is to simplify and improve the construction of such oil can upon which I have been granted U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,751,314, issued to me on March 18, 1930.

Figur-e 1 is an approximately central vertical longitudinal sectional view through an oil can in accordance with this invention. Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof. Figure 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 3'-3 of Figure l, looking in the direction of the arrows.
The body of the can 1 of improved' oiler is in the nature of a cylinder which is closed at both of its ends, either or both of which ends may be screwed on, welded or otherwise sealed, and has one of its sides provided with a handle Q. The upper end of the handle underlies and is preferably secured to the lower portion of an upwardly extending inwardly rounded member 3. The ymember 3 has its lower end secured to thel can and its upper end overlies the top of the can. The member 3 provides a finger hold. r The closed top of the can is provided at one side of the center thereof with an openingsurrounded by an outwardly extending flange, the said opening affording an` oil inlet to the can and the same is normally closed by a screw cap 4. The top of the oiler 1, atA the center thereof is provided with another opening that is surrounded by an outwardly directed threaded sleeve 5 and on this sleeve there is screwed a packing nut 6.
Passing through the packing in the nut 6 and through the sleeve 5 there is the straight spout 7 of the improvement. The spout has secured on its inner end a disc 8, and the said dise has fixed on its inner face, adjacent its outer periphery a compressible gasket or washer 9 which contacts with the inner wall or bore of the can 1'. The disc 8 is formed with an opening 10 and this opening is normally closed by a valve 11 that is formed by enlarging one end of a spring strip 12, the second end of the said strip being otherwise secured by means 13 to the disc` 8. Obviously 4the dise 8 and the gasket or compressible ring member 9 provide the spout 7 with a plunger. e
Freely received on the spout 7, outward of the can 1 there is a slidable split band 14;. This-band is infiuenced in one direction by a spring 15, which surrounds the spout and contacts with the inner tace of the band and the outer face of the packing nut 6.
Pivotally secured between the ears at the split end of the band 14. as indicated by the numeral 1G there is a block in the nature of a dog 17. Incident to the-pressure exerted by the spring 15 and the split band 14 the dog will ,be eanted and caused to assume an angle so that one of its ends will be in Contact with the spout 7. The second or outer end of the dog 17 is bifureated and has received therein and pivoted thereto, as at 18, the end of a lever 19. The pivot 18 passes through a somewhat elongated opening 20 in the lever to prevent the said dog being pushed against or pulled away from the spout beyond a determined extent. The lever 19 is pivoted. as at 21, in the biiureatedV end 22 ot the rounded finger hold 3. The finger hold 3 being of metal embodies a natural resiliency and will have a tendency to Jforce the active face or corner 23 of the dog against the spout. The outer end ot the lever vmerges into a downwardly extending ring portion 24 designed to receive therethrough the forefin ger of the operator when the device is operated for ejecting oil from the can, or to aid the operator in conveying the can from place to place. y
The operation of the improvement is similar to that set forth in my mentioned Patent 1,751.314. Oil is poured into can when plunger is down at the bottoni ot' the can. Then operator takes hold of the gripping band, pushing same downward so as to release the grip on spout, and with his other hand taking hold of the spout pulling same up. In this operation all the oil in the can will be forced through opening 10 below the plunger. IVhen the oil is to be forcibly ejected from the can the operator gripping the handle 2 and placing his foreinger in the ring 2l of the lever 19 will swing the lever on f its pivot 21 thereby causing the dog to grippingly engage with the spout 7'to force the spout and plunger downwardly 1n the can to compress the oil between the plunger and the bottom of the can and so cause the oil to be ,forcibly ejected through the spout 7. Having described the invention, I claim: In combination with a lubricant can having a lubricant outlet spout provided with a plunger for ejecting the lubricant through the spout when the spout is moved downwardly into the can, and a spring influenced split band surrounding the outer portion of the spout, and a handle for the can, of an inwardly rounded spring member providing a finger hold having one end secured to the can in a line with the handle and its other end bifurca-ted and disposed above the top of the can, a lever pivoted in said bifurcated end and provided at one e'nd with an elongated opening and having its otherend formed with a downwardly extending ring portion disposed over the top of the can and like- Wise disposed adjacent to but spaced from theinwardly rounded member, and a substantially rectangular dog pivoted in the split end of the band and carrying a, pivot which passes through the elongated opening in the lever and the active end of the dog being in contact with the spout. f
