Description
Aug. 23, 1932. D' E 1,873,713
TRAFFIC SIGNAL Filed April 26, 1932 Patented Aug. 23, 1932 UNETED STATES erase nnwannnrnnnnn, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA TRAFFIC Application filed. April 26,
My invention relates toa new and useful improvement 111 traffic signals, and hasfor one of its ob ects to provide an exceedlngly simple andeffective device of this description by which a distinctive sound will be given forth, which sound may be a combination of distinctive sounds, such as two or more whistles of different pitch.
A further object of the invention is to put the sounding of the signal under ready control of the traflic ofiicer or other authorized person and enable the signal to be sounded with little or no effort on the part of said authorized person.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a power driven blower in which one or more Whistles may be inserted so thatthe rotating of the blower will cause said whistles to be sounded.
With these and other ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim. I
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in
which i 1 Fig. 1, is a side elevation of my improved traflic signal.
Fig. 2 is a, plan view of Fig. 1.
" Fig. 3 is an elevation of the signal casing having the face plate removed and being partly in section so as to show the manner of attaching the whistles to said casing.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line H of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow, showing the motor in elevation and in proper relation to the signal casing.
In carrying out my invention as herein embodied, 10 represents the signal casing having a circular space 11 therein in which the fan blades 12- are intended to revolve.
13 represents an electric motor of any suitable design and capacity having its power shaft 14 projecting into the space 11 and on this extended shaft is clamped a split hub 15 1 SIGNAL 19 2- tia rNo-fiwfii' i i byineans ofjthe bolts 16 andbet'weenl the sec-- tions of thissplit hubare secured the blades 12 as clearlysho'wn iniFig. 5 V
The signal casing-is'provided withfacover '17 whichis secured in place by the bolts 18 intended to'be threaded into the holes 19 formed insaid casing so that bythe' removal 'of this covereasy access may be hadt'o the interior of "the casing for the inspection or repair of the fan. V
20"represents the base upon which the'signal casing and the motor are mounted'and m'a'y'be of suchshape or design as to be readily attached to a trafiic signal post or other desired object.
21 represents nipples which are formed With the casing 10 and these nipples are of such shape as to readily receive the shanks of the whistles 22 and when said whistles are in place they are securely held against accidental displacement by suitable screws 23 as will be readily understood, and while these whistles may be of any desired type, I have here shown that type of whistle in which a small ball 24 is so housed as to rapidly move back and forth over the air outlet 25 to give a trilling sound. The electric wires 26 lead from the motor to any suitable switch or push button so that when the device is used in connect-ion with a traffic sight signal the changing of such signal may be utilized to start the motor and revolve the blower blades 12, thereby drawing in air through the openings 27 and forcing said air out through the whistles to give the proper audible signal.
Or where it is desirable to operate the audible signal independent of a sight signal, the operation of the switch or button for sending a current through the motor may be .1
By making the whistles removable it enables one whistle to be interchanged with another, thereby providing for giving a different composite sound to the signal so that the 5 signal may be set for any given distinctive sound thus distinguishing one signal from another.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown,
as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and useful is An audible power signal consisting ofa hollow casing having inlet openings formed in the face thereof, a cover for closing the casing, a power shaft projecting into the easing; a split hub adapted to clamp upon the 29 shaft, two fan blades adapted to be secured between the sections of the hub when the latter is clamped upon the shaft, nipples formed with the casing and having outlets therethrough and whistles rcmovably secured in said whistles.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto aflixed my signature.
EDWARD LINDNER.
