Patented Aug. 23, 1932 STATES pairs AUGUSTIN' J. GHEVRETTE, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO CROMPTOIT &, KNOWLES LOOM WORKS, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS}, A OORPORATIO N" OF MASSACHUSETTS Application filed April 6,
This invention relates to improvements in shuttle changing looms and it is the general object of the invention to provide 'means whereby a shuttle may enter a box with greater accuracy at the time of shuttle ex change.
In a form of shuttle changing loom which has gone into general use there is provided a magazine located above the lay which is arranged to release a full shuttle whenthe weft of the running shuttle is exhausted. The lay is provided with two shifting shuttle boxes which are normally at rest but which at the time of change are raised, the upper box to receive the fresh shuttle and the lower box to receive the incoming exhausted shuttle. At a subsequent point in the cycle of the operation these boxes are lowered so that the fresh shuttle is brought opposite the lay while the exhausted shuttle is discharged into an appropriate receiver. In connection with this form of changing mechanism there is used a binder which is stationary with respect to the lay and this binder is soproportioned and positioned as to hold the shuttles in proper osition during shifting movements of the oxes.
Where high speed looms are used it is desirable to set the binder sufliciently close to the rear wall of the box so as to effect proper checking of the shuttle. When so set there is likelihood that the binder will interfere somewhat with the free gravitational downward movement of the fresh shuttle into the top box. It is an important object of my present invention to provide means which shall be brought into action by the movement of the boxes to act on the stationary binder and move the same away from the opposite part of the shuttle box, thereby providing sufficientclearance to permit the fresh shuttle to drop properly onto the box floor.
A more specific object of my invention is to provide a cam or other device having an inclined face to engage the binder as the boxes rise for the purpose of moving the binder forwardly, this cam passing out of con trolling position relatively to the binder during the return of the boxes to normal position and prior to picking.
SHUTTLE CHANGER LOOM 1931. Serial No. 528,198.
With these and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the combination and arrangementof parts hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
convenient embodiment of my invention is set forth,- 1
Fig. 1 is a top plan View of a lay having I my invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 .is a front elevation taken in the direction of arrow 2,
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on line 33 of Fig. 1 showing the ,boxes in normal down position,
Fig. 4 is a View similar to Flgl but as.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein a j a portion of This structure has guide tongues 12 to enter guide plates 1.3 carried by the lay. By meche anism not shown herein but set forth in aforesaid patent the boxes may be moved vertically in order to effect a change of shuttles.
Under normal conditions when a sufiicient supply of weft is present the box structure will be in the position shown in Fig. 3 with the upper box 14 in picking position and the lower box 15 below picking position.
A binder 16 is pivoted to the lay asat 17 and is held normally in rear position by a binder spring 18. The. back of the shuttle box may be defined by a wall 19 against which the active shuttle 20 is pushed by the binder.

eration as set forth in the aforesaid patent. It is to be understood that the boxes will rise from the down position shown in full lines to the raised position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 when the shuttle change is to take place and that the upper box is defined in part by the binder 16 together with the extensions 21 and the wall 19 shown in Fig.4.
' In carrying my-invention into-eifectlprov de'the'box with acam .30havingan-up-1 wardly and rearwardly inclined sur ace 31 which normally lies below the binder V l/Vhen in this position the active shuttle may be picked into-and from the top box and the binder will act in the usual way. When a change of shuttle is calledfor,-however, the box will rise'as previously describedand the cam'wil'l bem'oved from the full to the dotted line position shown I movement of the boxes the "cam moves out of controlling position with respect to the binder and the latter returns to its normalp'osition where it can check the shuttles as they wall to enlarge said dimension of the shuttle box, said means including an inclined face moving with the shuttle box and engaging the binder.
