invention relates to furnaces, more particularly to billet furnaces, and to mechanism for. advancing and withdrawing zbillets therefrom. 7
In ebillet furnaces as heretofore constru-cted, the floors-10f the heating chambers of the furnaces have generally fheen given slopes. Skids are provided 1011 the floors and extend from the entrance of the .fu-rnacetola position near the discharge end .of thefurna-ce. A. pusher bar is insertable into doors spaced along :the furnace for advancing the billets when they stickon the skids or the fur- However, the forward movement ofthe pusher has been limitedby reason of the presence of thefistationary run-off table. As a result, :a portion of the furnace near the discharge end has been inaccessible "to the pusher bar. Billets have therefore had to he rolled across this area by hand. Large bi llets occasionally require the efforts of at least four 'men forro'lling them across this small area and "into alignment'with the discharge ram.
I provide a furnace in which the discharge or roll-oif table is mounted on trucks so that itcan :be pushed away from in front of the furnace as the-pusher advances. This construction permits the pusher bar to have access to substantially the entire jfioor surface of the furnace and eliminates the need for manpower to advance the billets :throughthe last-portion of the furnace.
The roll-off table is mounted :on a truckwhich is positioned in the path oftheadvancing pusher. As the pusher moves into position to eng rge the truck carrying the roll-otf table, the latter is moved ahead of the pusher. In one form of the invention the truck carryingthe roll-0E table is coupledto the pusher so that the pusher on recedingfromthe discharge endof the furnace draws the roll-10ft table truck into position opposite the discharge ram, when it is uncoupled. In another form of the invention, the truck carrying the roll-off table is mounted cna support :or track extending at angle :to the support or track for the pusher so that the advancing "pusher shoves-the truck for the. roll-0E table .up an incline. Then as the pusher recedes, the roll-off table is automatically positioned infront of the discharge ram on account of the action of the force of gravity. Stop mechanism is providedfor auto-y inatically positioning the roll-ofi table :inthe correct position relativeto thedischarge ram. The accompanying drawings illustrate certain present preferred embodiments of the invention, in which Figure 1 is a planrview, partially in section, of a furnace and operating mechanism .enibodyingmy invention;

Beyond the ends of the skids the billets '4 roll and/or slide directly on the floor of the furnace in order to prevent the formation of dark or cold rings corresponding to their areas I of engagements with the skids 6.
Where skids extend throughout the entire length of the furnace, there is atendency for the portions of the billets Which engage the skids to remain cold, which condition'is exhibited by the'presence of dark spots or rings. The presence of such cold portions erations performed onthe billets. As the fioor 7 of the furnace is maintained at substantially a uniform temperature throughout its width, movement of the billets along the furnace on the floor avoids formation of such dark or cold areas on the billets. If
desired, aportion 8 of the floor 7 beyond the ends of the skids may be inclined more steep ly than other portions thereof. The dis charge end portion 9 of the furnace-is preferably substantially horizontal.
It is to'beunderstood that the furnace 2' is provided with the usual pipe lines for supplying air and removing products of combustion but as such ooeratin arts are well known in the art, a detailed showing thereof has been omitted. The furnace 2 terminates in a chamber 10 which may constitute a portion of the combustion chamber, or a mixing chamber, as desired.
- The front face of the furnace is provided with a number of doorsll through which access of the interior of the furnace is had. The rear face is likewise provided with doors 12 which are usually smaller than the doors 1; i 4
For advancing the billets 4 along the skids 6 and the floor 7 of the furnace, a pusher bar '14 is mounted on. a pusher truck 15 movable along a track 17 extending insubstantial parallelism with the forward face ofthe furnace 2. The pusher bar 14, as is well understood in the art, is mounted on the truck 15 in such manner that it is projectablethrough the doors 11 for engaging the billets 4. The pusher bar is also mounted on tracks 18 and 19 on the truck 15 so that it may be turned through an arc of a circle for better advancing the billets 4. A detailed showing of the pusher corresponding substantially to the pitch of the floor 7. lVhile T have illustrated the floor 7 as being inclined, it is to be understood that a it maybe made horizontal if desired, In the latter case the rack 17 is also placed in a horizontal position.
The billets 4are discharged fromthe furnace 2 with .a longitudinal movement by a ram 20 insertable through a door 21 near the rear end of the furnace. The ram 20 engages the ends of the billets 4 and projects them longitudinally through a door'22 in the other face of the furnace onto discharge rollers 24. The dischargev rollers 24 cooperate with other run-off rollers 25 mounted on a truck 26 which moves along the tracklT. The rollers 25 constitute .a'run-off table for billets discharged from the furnace. Heretofore it has been customary to provide a stationaryrun-off table opposite the discharge door 22. With such a construction the pusher truck 15 has not been able to advance the entire. length of the-furnace due to the engagement between theend' of the truck and the stationary roll-off table structure. By mounting the roll ofi table on a truck which is disposed in the path of movement of the pushertruck 15, the pusher truck mo'ves'th'e *truck carrying therrunoff table outof the way while operatingnear the discharge end of the furnace; V
- By having the pusherbar accessible to the discharge end of the furnace, the hand labor which has heretoforebeen required to roll the billets across the hitherto inaccessible portion of the furnacefloor is eliminated. In furnaces where the billetshave had to be rolled and/or skidded across portions of the furnace floor by hand owing to the inaccessibility of the pusher bar, the services of a considerable number of workmenhave been required. 7 r -1 i A coupling 27 connects the pusher truck 15 and the, truck 26 so that upon the with .drawal of the pusher truck, which is usually -done under its own power, the truck carrying the roll-off table is positioned so thatthe rollers 24 and 25 are in alignment. It is to be understood that the truck 26 may be provided withbraking mechanism, if necessary.
Referring'to- Figures 4, 5 and 6, wherein parts corresponding'to partsshown in Fig ures 1, 2 and 8 have been given the same reference numerals with a prime sufiix, the pusher truck 15 mounted on a track 17 engages a truck 26' carrying rollers 25' similar to the rollers 25 shown in the otherembodiment of the invention. In this form of the invention, the truck26 is mounted on a support in the form of a track' 28 which slopes upwardly from its forward end which is, slightly beyond a discharge door; 22,.in :the furnace 2.

A furnace structure comprising a furnace having a sloping floor,.means for advancing material in the furnace, atrack for supporting the advancing means, said track being substantially parallel to the floorrof said furnace, a run-off table'for material discharged from the furnace and a sloping track for supporting the run-01f table, said lastmentioned trackextending at an angle to the first-named track;
