I Application filed. fs tember 11o, 1:129: fseriai 102393614;-
The invention 7 relates to auxiliary-{foot rests for the *use of children and short persons and-fiappliedwto dental chairs-and thev like; in combina-tionwi-th foot rests forthe use of adults; wherebyeitherthe-adults foot rest"or the auxiliary child s' foot re'st may be used "as required, thereby I avoiding the rest extension--? necessity; ofhavinga separate small "dental chair ifor childrens' "and short persons use. The objects of the presentiimprovements include the provision-in-a dental chair ofan auxiliary"-fo1ding ohild s' step or platform and foot rest; conveniently combined with the auxiliary step or 'platformand foot rest g being-adapted to be extended and automati eallyi "unfolded into woperat-ivej position and withdrawn and automaticallyfolded 1nto4 inoperative.unobstructive position, byan "easy" foot or manual operation:

Improved operating meansindicated gener-allyatflfz, areprovided for automatically rotating the auxiliary foot rest; platformmember l8-about-its pivot screws, frOm-its-im; operative and' non-obstructive position -il-l us-; trated in=Fig,- 3, to its operative positionillus:
The outer end bf the' crankar1n-22 is pi votallyconnected as bymeans of a pin 23 with one-end of anangle link 24:; andi'the linki24 f extends from the, pivot-pin23*aldngside of 9 the -"platform'-18 and about "the pivot screwr. 17 wherethe'other'end ofthe link is con nected preferably'by' a slot and pin Uconnec- A ti-on indicated at "25 With'theside liar -1lfthe slotand-ipinconnection; being; 1dcated"belowthe pivots'crewl'iil' i The slot and pin connection preferably may include a slot 26 formed in the angle link 24, and a pin 27 extending through the slot and secured in the side member 11.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, a web 28 extends between the chair side bars 11 and 11, which necessitates providing the slot and pin connection 25 in order to obtain clearance of the link 2 f when the platform is folded 'outof-use into the nonobstructive position illustrated in Fig. 3.
Otherwise the slot and pin connection may be any desired type of pivotal connection;
and the platform 18, the crank arm 22, the
link 24, and the side arm 11"'betwe'en the pivot screw17 andthe pin27, comprise a four-bar linkage, the membersof which are proportioned to impart the desired folding and unfolding. movements to the platform extension 20 during rotation of the platform For rotating the platform 18, and for limiting the outward swinging thereof,a stop arm 29 extends from the platform at the side of the link 24 and from the axis of the pivot screws 17, 17 in the opposite directionv to the direction of extension of the platform- .The upper surface of the stoparm is arranged to abut against a stop 30 which may .be secured on the side bar 11, and the auxiliary foot rest may be actuated by a combined crank handle and pedal 31'having the knurled foot engaging portion 31, and which extends laterally. and outwardly, from the .stop arm 29.
When the auxiliary foot rest is in the extended position shown in Figs. 2 and 4, a downward force applied on pedal 31 rotates the platform 18 about the pivots 17 and 17,
an intermediate position of the platform being shown in dot-dash lines in Fig. 2. As aforesaid, the platform 18 constitutes one member of the four bar linkage for folding theextension 20. As the platform is rotated, the link 24, another member of the linkage, is
rotating aboutpivot 27. Since side arm 11', which constitutes a third member of the link-' age, is stationary and both pivots 17 and 27 are fixedly mounted thereon, when platform 18 rotates, the position of the outer end of link 24 pivoted at 23 on extension 20 changes relative to pivot 17, because the distance between points 23 and 27 remains the same.
Crank arm 22, the fourth member of the, linkage, connects pivots 19 and 23. Thus, as
plied on the pedal 31, in the downward and rearward direction, rotates the platform 18 about the pivots 17 and 17 to the position indicated in full lines in Fig.2, and theafore- V swung back between the side bars, leaving the said four-bar linkage operates to unfold the extension 20 and rotate the same in its stub shaft hearings to the extended position illustrated in Fig. 2.
Accordingly, by the present improvements an auxiliary foot rest is provided for the dental chair 10 as aforesaid, which includes the platform 18 and the extension 20, and
which may be automatically folded up and 5 adults foot rest unobstructed and ready for use, as illustrated in Fig. 3, or which may be automatically swung outwardly and unfolded and used as a foot rest for a child or a small person, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
I claim I 1. Ina dental chair and the like includin a seat and a foot rest frame havin spacec l side bars and a web extending therelietween, a foot rest including a platform member pivotally'mounted between the side bars below said web and adaptedto be rotatively drawn within the foot rest frame against the web, an extension pivotally mounted on the platform member for rotating toward and away from the platform member, and an angle link pivotally connected at one end to the extension and extending alongside the platform and around the pivotal mounting of the platform and having a slot and pin connection at its other end with the frame for simultaneously rotatively folding the extension upon the platform member when the latter is rotatively withdrawn within the foot rest frame and for simultaneously rotatively extending the extension relative to the platform member when the latter is extended.
2. In a dental chair and the like includin a seat and a foot rest frame havin space side bars and a web extending there etween, a foot rest including a platform member pivotally mounted between the side bars below said web and adapted to be rotatively drawn within the foot rest frame against the web, an extension pivotally mounted on the platform member for rotating toward and away from the platform member, and means connecting the extension and the frame for simultaneously rotatively folding the extension upon the platform member when the latter 115 is rotatively withdrawn within the foot rest frame and for simultaneously rotatively extending the extension relative to the platform member when the latter is extended, the connecting means including a crank arm secured 1% to the extension and a link pivotally con- 'nected at one end with the arm and extending alongside the platform and around the pivotal mounting of the platform and having a slot and pin connection at its other end with the frame.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
WILLIAM GOWIE.
