The invention relates to calculating machines of the 'type embo'dying a rotatable actuator upon which the values to be calculated are set up, rotation of the actuatorby suitable means, serving to transmit the values entered into 'the actuator, indirectly, by means of intermediate wheels, to the figure disc of the counting mechanism which for the purpose of making direct action of the selected values on the intermediate wheels of the figure discs of hi best value possible, is disposed in parallel isplaceable relation to the axis of the actuator.
An object of the inventionis to simplify the construction and lessen the cost of manufacture of calculating machines of the rotary actuator type.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rotary actuator of the multi-pin type in which rotation of the actuator serves to move the selected number of pins into coop-' selected for illustration in the drawing ac:

Associated-with t e counting mechanism and mounted in the frame of the machine, is an actuator having a reversible cycle of operation, which serves, upon rotation in either direction, to transmit the 7 values entered therein to'the numeral wheels of the counting mechanism. The actuator comprises a suitable means, such .as a hand-crank, for
rotating it in either direction.
Each actuating unit comprises a wheel or disc 12, upon which are arranged nine ordinal registration pins 13, two, transfer pins or tens carrying pins 14, and a transfer lever restoring cam 15. The transfer pins 14 are of a construction heretofore described in one of my co-pending applications and their specific construction will not be described herein, it bein suflicient to state that these pins are rockab e transversely by the transfer lever 7, and serve to advance I the intermediate wheels of the next highest order one step.
The nine ordinal registration pins 13 are disposed radially of the disc 12 and at their outer ends extend through slots in a periph eral flange 16, the ends of the pins projecting beyond the periphery of the disc. The disc is provided with a hub 17, having a plurality of radially extending slots therein, and the inner ends of the pins are seated in these slots. Longitudinal movement of the pins with respect to the disc is prevented by a projection 18 on the pins, engaging in an aperture in the disc. The pins 13 are rockable sideways with respect to the disc and the projecting ends of the pins are normally held in a plane spaced from the plane of the associated intermediate wheel 5 by a spring 19 interposed between the pin and the disc. If, during rotation of the disc, the pins 13 remained in their normal position, as shown in Figure 2, the projecting ends of the pins would not contact with the teeth of the intermediate wheel 5. To accomplish movement of the intermediate wheel, on rotation of the disc, means are provided for moving a selected number of pins sidewise, so that the transversely moved ins lie in the plane of the intermediate w eel 5, as the pins move through contact with the intermediate wheel, thereby causing movement of the intermediate wheel a number of steps corresponding to the selected number of pins moved transversely.
To accomplish the transverse rocking of the selected number of pins, each pin is provided on its side, remote from the spring 19,
with a pad or 'projection 21, the projections on the successive pins terminating, preferably at their inner ends, at successively different distances from the axis of the disc. It will be noted in Figures 1 and 4 that the pro- 'ection 21 on the pin 13 is the longer, the projection on the next pin 13 is slightly shorter and the projections on the successive pins are successively shorter. These projections, beginning at different distances from the axis of the disc, are employed to cause a transverse rocking movement, on rotation of the disc, of a selected number of pins, the pins rocked transversely having their outer ends moved into the plane of the associated intermediate wheel 5, so that they contact with and move the intermediate wheel.
Associated with each disc, and mounted on the hub 17 thereof, and on a fixed rod 23, is a slide 24 which is provided on its inner end adjacent the axis of the disc, with a curved laterally projecting cam 26. The slide 24 is movable to selected position to bring the cam 26 into the path of a selected number of projections 21. When the slide 24 is in zero position, the cam 26 lies within the circle of the inner end of the longest projection 21, so that on rotation of the disc, none of the pins 13 will be rocked transversely. When the cam 26 is moved into adjusted position more remote from the axis of the disc 12, a selected number of projections 21 will engage the cam and cause transverse rocking of the corresponding number of pins.
Means are provided for moving the cam 26 to adjusted position and in the present ifstance this means includes a plurality of numeral ke s 28, having values from zero to nine, inc usive, the key at the front end of the row preferably having the zero value and the key at the rear end of the row preferably having the nine value. Each key is provided with a key stem 29 which cooperates with a setting lever so that on depression of a selected key, the slide 24 is moved to position the cam 26 so that the number of pins 13 corresponding to the value of the depressed key will be rocked sidewise into the plane of the associatedintermediate wheel 5, on rotation of the disc. ..,In the present construction, the setting lever comprises a lever system including the lever 31, associated with some of the key stems, and connected intermediate its ends to the lever 32, associated with other of the key stems, the lever system being such that the lever 32 is rocked a distance corresponding to the value of the depressed key. Each key stem is also provided with a spring 33 for returnin it to elevated position when it is released y the slide 34, each ke stem being provided with a projection 35 a apted to en gage under the slide 34 when the key is depressed. These features are fully disclosed in my prior application and require no specific description herein. At its rear end, the lever 32 is connected to the bell crank lever 37, which is normally held retracted by the spring 38 and which is provided at its upper end with a slot 39, in which is disposed a pin 41, secured to the slide 24.
The cam 26 is disposed between the axis of the disc and the intermediate wheel 5, and, on rotation of the disc, the projection 21 on the pins 13, depending upon the position of the cam 26, ride over the cam, causing the corresponding pins to be rocked transversel to bring their outer ends into the plane 0 the intermediate wheel 5, and thereby causing the pins to contact with and move the intermediate wheel, the wheel being moved a number of steps equal to the number of pins which contact therewith.
I claim:
1. In a calculating machine, a re 'stering element, actuating mechanism there or comprising a series of sprin pressed actuating elements each adapted w en operatively positioned to drive said registering element through a single step, and selectin mechanismcomprising a member differentially settable to a series of operative positions along a line normal to a line tangent to the said registering element at the driving oint to efiect operative positioning of a num r of said actuating elements corresponding to the difl'erential setting of said member.
2. In a calculating machine, a rotatable registering element, actuating mechanism thereforcomprising a rotatable disk, a series of actuating pins arranged radially thereon and rockable transversely to the direction of rotation, springs individual to said pins normally holding them rocked into inoperative position, abutments of different lengths on said pins adapted to be engaged to rooksaid pins to operative position, selecting mechanism comprising a cam of a width equal to the difference in length of said rojections, and a series of keys for moving sald cam to a series of operative positions along a'line normal to a linetangent to said registering element at the driving point to effect operative positioning upon'rotation of the actuating mechanism of a number of pins corresponding to the value of the key.
