It is the object of this invention to provide a head-lamp organization with simple, inexpensive and reliable means for centering and securing the main parts thereofV in assembled relationship; and preferred embodiments of the invention may involve the use, within an external plate-retaining rimA element, which may be C-shaped in radial sect-ion, of a tension band that serves to retain said rim by constrictive engagement with parts interior thereto.
The invention preferably includes eX- ternally accessible means for so tensioning said band as to bring a flange or bead thereon into a resilient retaining engagement with a cooperating part upon one of the main concave elements of the head-lamp; and said concave elements preferably include not only mutually engaging integral flanges, disposedy at an angle to one another, but also integral extensions, disposed at right angles to one another, upon said flangesV-the flanges and/or extensions serving tocentre the mentioned parts and also to effect a bayonet# joint interconnection therebetween.
This invention, in some embodiments thereof, contemplates the use of strip stock in the production of said rim. It also contemplates the use of a novel inwardly-extending interlocking element or Y elements, preferably hook-like in form, interiorly-and perma-j nently secured to said rim; anch-if desired,

To assure inwardly application of pres-v sure through mentioned parts including the conical flange 20, andA to provide'for the retention of the rim'19 ina preferred position, the latter may interiorly receive a tension band 31. This is shown as shaped to 'interfit between the gasket-25 and an additional flange 32,-provided upon the rim 19 adjacent onenofa plurality of beads 33 and 34, peripherally .formed upon theouter concave element 11. The tension band 31 is shown as provided v with abead 35, intermediate the width thereof,adapted,to so engage the mentioned bead 34, upon constriction of-vsaid band, las to hold the rim 19 in its illustrated position; and tensionrmay be applied to said band by means of a screw 36...; This screwV is shown as extending through openings in apairof brackets 37, 37 secured to terminal portions of the band 31, and extending through an opening in the rim 19; and, for an interlocking effect, preventing undesired relative rotation of mentioned parts, the respectivel flanges 26 and 28, and also the extension 30 upon flange 27, may be provided with suitable coincident openings-'such as slots 38, 38 and shown in thel flanges 26 and 28; and an interlocking '-eifectmay then be obtained by the insertion therethroughfof a pin or al suitable hooklikeor inwardly curved element 39. This may be secured to the rim 19, as by means of rivets40; anda plate-like portion of the element 39, through which the mentioned rivets extend, may serve to unite the ends of the rim` 19, if the latter` is formed from strip stock, andalsoV to provide an opening 41, thrughwhich the brackets 37, 37 may'exten.-' 'f Although the foregoing clamping arrangement serves to hold the Vreflector 12 to the shell 11, it is desirable in some instances to provide an additional means to positively secure the Vreflector and shell together. In assembling, it will be obvious that,sock ets 13,14 and 15 being first securedy in the respective concave elements, the'wired `plug 13 is to be seated in socket 13 before the flanges 27 and 28 of concave elements 11 and 12 are brought into mutual engagement and the hooks 42 are seated by the slight rotative movement referred to. The plate 21, -gasket 25 and band 31 (or band 31a) may be separately assembled within the rim 19 (or 19a) in such manner as to permit separate storage, shipment, sale and application or removal thereof as a unitary sub-assembly; and, when assembly may be secured in place by merely tightening the screw 36, or-ts equivalent.

1. In a headlamp, a'concave outer shell, av
concave reiiector therein, and a light-trans- 'lil 0 Yapplied in the indicated manner, this subinitting plate, means for holding said shell, reflector and plate in mutual engagement comprising a hollow rim engaging said plate and a tension band within said rim constrictively engaging said shell and rim, additional means for positioning and securing said reflector to said shell comprising interlit-ting flanges thereon having a bayonetjoint connection, and means to prevent relative rotation between said shell, reflector and plate comprising an element carried by said Y rim and interengaging between said plate and interiitting flanges.
2. In a headlamp, a concave outer shell, a concave reflector therein, and a light-transmitting plate, means for positioning said reflector relative to said shell comprising interfitting flanges thereon, means for holding said plate, reflector and shell in mutual engagement comprising a hollow rim including a flange engaging said plate, a contractible band therein engaging said shell and said rim with externally accessible means to contract said band, and means for preventing relative rotation between said plate, re-
flector and shell comprising a notch in said v plate and openings in said interfitting flanges, and an element on said rim extending through said notch and openings.
3. In a headlamp, a concave outer shell, a reector therein, a light-transmitting plate, positioning means for said shell and reflector comprising interlitting flanges thereon, and holding means for said shell, reflector and plate including a split hollow rim and a contractible tension band therein, and means to unite the adjacent ends of said split rim andk prevent relative rotation between said shell, reflector and plate, comprising an element connected to said adjacent rim ends having a portion thereof engaging said plate and said interlitting flanges on said shell and reflector.
