VThe present invention relates to dump wag-V ons, having particular reference to such dump wagons of the bottom dump type, whichV employ one or more bottom doors or gates adapted tobe swung down yin the dumping operation, and the principalobject yof the present invention is the provision of a new and improved door structure for wagons of this kind. The body'of the dump wagon is divided into fore-and-aft parts by a centrally located partition running transversely'of` the frame 'and body. The bottom of each of these compartments is closed by two doors of the type forming the subject'of the instant application. Y i Y l lReferring-to the drawing in more detail, it will be seen that the door comprises a plu-v rality of laterally disposed Z bars 81, which form a frame upon which 'the door is built. The face ofthe door comprises the sheet metal member 82, which rests on one of the flanges of the Z bars and which has its edges rolled over the ends of the Z bars 81 and' riveted to the face of the opposite flanges of the Z bars. I In this manner, ,the edges of the plate 82 are formed into channels 83, which stiien the door.
Theupper'iianges of the Z bars aord attaching' surfaces to which the top portion of theplate 82 is riveted at closely'spaced inter# vals. Y The 'lower flanges of the Z bars also aord attaching surfaces to which the in;` wardly .bent lower` edges of the channel 83 are secured. The two bars at the ends of the doorA have tubular guide brackets 84 secured thereto adjacent to the swinging edge of the door, through which brackets passes vthe `hoisting' chain 101,'which raises the-door into engagement with the body of the wagon. The intermediate Zbars have openings v8,4 provided in thevert-icalwebs thereof in alignment with theguidebrackets 84, to yform a continuous passageway through the door for the chain 101. Y Y

Secured to the outer edge of the door at longitudinally spaced points along its length are `hingebrackets 85, the horizontal portions 85 of which extend through openings 83 in the channel 83, and arergidly secured to the b ars 81 of the door jby rivets.

and inwardly and is apertured to providea hinge eye 86, as best seen in Figure 2. 'Ea-ch eye 86 engages around abracket 87, which has its lower end secured to the web of the side channel 16 of-the body ofthe wagon,as seen in Figure il, and having its upperend secured tothe upper" end of channel 16, which latter connection is not shown herein.
It will-be evident that the foregoing lhinge connection permits accrtain amount of play of the door relatively to the -body of the wagon. The doors in their dump position will tend to hang with their lower edges disposed under the frame of the wagon, but the doors are free t6 swing outwardly to the sides of the frame in clearing themselves of the pile of dirt dumped Afrom the wagon; 'Moreover, the mounting of the eyesl 96 on the brackets 87l permits the door to move upwardly and downwardly, when in their dumped position so that they can clear themselves l from the dumped pile or other obstructions, as the wagon is being drawn away, after dumping. In their closed position, the doors aredisposed'substantially flush with the lower edges of the side channels 16,-as shown in Figure 4;. Thus, it will be seen `that the'door vdisjclosedin this applicationilends itself particularly fwell for use with aY dump wagon. It is strong enough to withstand the shock of dropping large quantities of. dirt andV rock on it, andgismounted with sufficient flexibility to permit its beingdragged'over a'freshly dumped pile of dirt, without injury to itself.
ln-the preferred embodiment of the door shown in the drawing byway of example,
the Z bars, door plates, chain guides,-and` hinges are riveted together.. Obviously, welding or any other desired form of attachment cou-ld be'substituted for riveting, without de- Vparting-from the teachings of the invention. Nor is the invention limited-to the use of Z barsas channels or any-other structural shape may be substituted therefor. c

In a door for a dump vehicle, the combination of av sheet of metala `plurality -of b ars of structural shape having webs and flanges, said bars disposed in parallelism upon said sheet of metal, said sheet having thel margins thereof folded transversely over theV ends of said bars to form reinforcing flanges for the edges transverse to the bars, said bars having openings through. the webs thereof, said openings being disposedin a line parallel to oner of the folded edges, and'afchain passing loosely through said openings.k

A dump door comprising a plurality of transversely extending bars, afplate secured to the upper sides of said bars and having its edges bent downwardly aroimd the ends of said bars and under the saine along the lll() side margin of the door, and guide means carried by said door for guiding a hoisting chain extending longitudinallyYY of the door between the ends thereof.

A dump ldoor comprising pairs of transversely .extending bars of approximately Z-shapedcross section disposed at longitudinally spaced points along the length of theV door, a plate secured to the upper flanges of said bars having its lateral margins bent downwardly and inwardly around and under the ends of the bars, each pair of bars defining a channel shaped socket within the door, said plate having openings cut therein in line with said sockets at the hinge edge of the door, and hinge brackets extending through said openingsl and being secured within said sockets.

In a door for dump vehicles, a plurality of parallel Z bars, a plate disposed over the face of o-ne of the flanges of-said bars'and Ahaving its edges bent over the ends thereof and attached to the face of the other anges of the bars, to form a channel edge for the door, sockets formed by adjacent ones of said Z bars placed with their flanges edge to edge, an aperture in said channel edge of the door vopposite said socket-s, and hinge brackets having channel shaped shanks projecting through said apertures into said sockets and outwardly and upwardly extending ring portions formed integral with the shanks, the ends of said rings being disposed substantially inthe pla-ne of the edge of said door. i 9. A dump door including a frame, a plate secured to the frame, hinge means for pivotally connecting one edge ofthe door, and flexible hoisting means extending substantially from end to end of the door through the frame adjacent the other edge, said plate terminating in a. hood along the lastmentioned edge toreenforce the frame and to substantially enclose the hoisting means against access of dirt.

A dumping door-for a dumping vehicle comprising a plurality of transversely extending bars, a plate forming the load supporting surface of the door disposed over the upper sides of said bars and having a margin thereof folded downwardly across the adjacent ends of said bars and thence inwardly under the lower sides of said bars to form a channel shaped reenforcing portion along one side of the door, said inwardly bent flange portion of the plate being secured to the under sides of said bars, said channel shaped reenforcing portion having spaced openings therein, hinge members having attaching shank portions extending through said openings and secured to the door at points inwardly of said openings. and guide members fastened to the door adjacent to the other Y margin thereof for receiving flexible hoisting means adapted to raise the door to closed position.
