This invention relates to a display sign comprising a front plate having an opening therein and a light reflecting surface, a sign plate disposed adjacent to the light reflect- & ing surface in line with the opening and exposed therethrough, a source of light located so that the emergent rays will impinge on the reflecting surface, the reflecting surface being so arranged that the incident rays will impinge on the surface of the sign plate facing the opening, thereby effecting the illumination of the characters on the face of the sign plate.

use and operation, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a front view of the display sign;
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on the line 2-2 Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3-3 Fig. 1 showing the use of the display sign in conjunction with a motor vehicle headlight.

In the preferred construction which is i1- lustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 the display sign comprises an opaque front plate 1 provided with an opening 2 and a light reflecting surface 3 and a sign plate 4 disposed adjacent to the reflecting surface and in line with the opening 2 and exposed therethrough. The sign plate is so located with relation to the rear surface of the concave reflector'that the reflected rays will impinge on the surface of the sign plate thereby effecting its illumination. The face of the sign plate may be employed for bearing any desired legend, characters or advertising matter.
In use a source of light is located with relation to the display sign so that the emergent rays will impinge on the reflecting surface. Where it is desired to removably secure the sign in position the front plate may be provided with a flange 5 upon which are mounted spring members 6. In some cases it may be more convenient to secure the spring members directly to the periphery of the front plate, in which case, the flange may be omitted. The sign may also be supported in any other suitable manner, with the source of light disposed in the rear, dependent upon the particular use to which the display sign may be put.
Fig. 3 illustrates one specific use of the display sign and it is shown as being employed on the headlight ofa motor vehicle which is the source of light for illuminating the sign plate in this particular instance.
.The motor vehicle headlight comprises a shell 7, a reflector8, an incandescent lamp 9 and an annular frame 10 for supporting the lens 11. The display sign is held in position by the spring members 6 engaging the annular frame 10. The emergent rays of the incandescent lamp within the motor vehicle headlight impinge on the reflecting surface of the front plate and the incident rays impinge on the face of the sign plate thereby illuminating the characters on said plate.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new-and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A display sign of the class described comprising a concave reflector having a transverse opening therein exposinga sign plate disposed within the concave surface of the reflector and in line with the opening formed 80 therein, a source of light located behind the sign plate the rays of which are reflected by the reflector and impinge on the face of the sign plate thereby effecting the illumination of the characters on the face of the sign plate.
2. A display sign of the class described comprising a concave reflector formed with an opening therein exposing a sign plate dis posed within the concave surface of the refl'ector and in line with the opening formed therein the contour of the opening conforming to the contour of the sign plate, a source of light located behind the sign plate, the rays of which are reflected by the reflector and impinge on the face of the sign plate thereby effecting its illumination. A. display sign of the class described comprising a concave reflector formed with an opening therein exposing a sign plate disposed Within the concave surface of the reflector and in line with the opening formed therein, the contour of the opening corresponding to the contour of the sign plate, a source of light located behind the sign late, the rays of which are reflected by the re ector and impinge on the face of the sign plate thereby effecting its illumination, a flange I secured to and surrounding the reflector and provided with a plurality of spring members for removably securing thedisplay sign in position.
