MARSHALL S. NEAL, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO E. G. TRIMBLE AND MARSHALL S. NEAL, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, COPARTNERS DOING BUSINESS UNDER THE FIRM-NAME 0F TRIMBLE, NEAL &, COMPANY SIGN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 14, 1917.
Application filed June 12, 1916. Serial No. 103,125.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARSHALL S. NEAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to signs, and IIlOiu particularly to a sign-board of the type used. in outdoor advertising; the principal object of the invention being to provide a sign having mechanical as Well as descriptive and ornamental features whereby the attention of passers-by may be attracted to the sign and induced to read an advertisement which may be painted or otherwise carried on the sign-board.
More particularly the invention relates to a sign-board for advertising automobiles, or accessories therefor, and comprises certain elements having particular relation to the automobile art; the preferred form and style of the sign-board being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I'is a perspective view of a signboard embodying my invention.
Fig. 11 is a rear perspective view of a part of the board showing the wiring whereby certain lighting elements may be energized. A
Fig. III is an enlarged vertical section of a part of the board and one of the lighting elements.
Referring more in detail to the drawin s:
I designates the body of the board which is preferably mounted on end standards 2, both the board and standards being of ornamental design and the standards being surmounted by globes 3 that may contain lamps 4, preferably of an incandescent type. The
contents of the board 1 is preferably divided into end panels 6 and an intermediate panel 7 one or both of the end panels bearing the representation of the forward portion of an automobile 8 comprising the headlights 9.
The body of the automobile may be painted on the sign-board and the board is cut away at the headlight positions to form openings 11, and located in each of said openings is a lamp housing 12 having a lens 13, the inner surface of the housing being coated to deflect light through the lenses. The housing is held to the sign-boards by a rim 13 which preferably bears against the outer face of the board to not only hold the lens to the housing but anchor the housing to the board.
Located in the housing is a lamp 14, of an electrical type, and connected with circuit wires 1516 that extend through the back of the housing and to a source of electrical supply indicated by the box 17, the present drawings illustrating the two headlights on one automobile as arranged in seriep, although this arrangement is not essentia Each of the lamp housings 12 is provided with a casing 18 which preferably comprises a box having flanges 19 secured to the back of the sign-board. Extending forwardly from the top of the board are brackets 21 that are curved downwardly at their forward ends and carry reflectors 22 containing suitable lamps (not shown); the parts being so arranged that light will be thrown from the reflectors onto the sign, and the brackets being of such number and arrangement as to properly illuminate the entire front face of the sign.
The lamps that are carried by the brackets 21 have circuit wires 2324 which preferably run to trunks 25 and the said trunks are also preferably connected with the lamps 4 on the end standards of the sign.
The source of electrical supply indicated by the box 17 may be of the flasher type style of board without departing from'the 105 spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is -l A sign comprising a board or the like, 5 bearing the representation of a body requiring an illuminator and having an opening at the illuminator position, a lamp housing located in said opening and having an open end at the side of the board bearing the representation of said body and having a reflector portion projecting from the opposite side thereof, a rim on the open end of the housing bearing against the board to retain a lens substantially flush therewith, and a lamp in said housing.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
MARSHALL s. NEAL.
