Description

B. MASON, Jr. & E. 3. SMITH.
SASH-HOLDER. 1104181159. Patented Feb. 6,1877..-
yv vlTNEyz v CPL-PETERS, PNOTO-UTHOGRAPFER. WASHINGTON.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENAJAH MASON, JR., AND ELI J. SMITH, OF NORTH ENGLISH, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,159, dated February 6, 1877 application filed October 12, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BENAJAH MASON, J r.,' and ELI JAMES SMITH, of North English, in
' the county of Iowa, and in the State of Iowa,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fastener; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in a vertical rod su=pended from the top of the interior part of a window-frame, in combination with the two window-sashes, each havinga pivoted and perforated metallic arm, through which the vertical rod is passed, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is -a front view of a window with sashes embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same.
A represents an ordinary window-frame, with upper sash B and lower sash 0, constructed in the usual manner. D represents a vertical rod, screwed with its upper end into the top of the frame A, so as to be perfectly rigid, and said rod extends below the top'rail of the lower sash G, and enters an eye, a, fastened in said sash.
Each sash is provided with a metallic arm, G, having a hole near its outer end, through which the rod 1) passes, the inner end of said arm being hinged or pivoted to a plate, b. For the upper sash B this plate is fastened to the front of the top rail, while for the lower sash it is fastened on top of the top rail, as shown in Fig. 2. 7
It will readily be seen that the hinged arm G will bind on the rod D, and hold either sash at any height desired.
Our invention can readily be applied to any window-frame and window-sash now in use, and both or either of the window-sash can be raised or lowered, and held independent of the other, on the same rod, at anyrequired height.
We are aware that it is not new to combine a grooved window-sash having a stopping device with a rod attached to the window-frame; but in such device as known to us two rods must be used, (one for each sash,) and the invention could not be applied without alteration of the window-sash.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination, with a Window-frame, of the vertical rod D, suspended from the top of the same, midway of the upper edge of the window, and the window-sashes, each provided with perforated pivoted metallic arms G G, of unequal length, through which the rod D passes, substantially as and for the purposes herein set't'orth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 22d day of September, 1876.

- ELI JAMES SMITH.
