Thisinvention relates to an improved ma chine for causing the application of names to various articles, substantially regardless of their length, width and height, suchas school 5 bags, brief cases, pocket books, leather folders, dress suit cases, books, cameras and thelike.

Previously names of the owners of such articles when purchased are ordered printed 1 on the articleswhich takes time, and in some business houses a nominal charge is made,

for applying the names of the owners to the articles purchased.

The present invention has' for its purpose to facilitate the application of an owners name to a school bag, brief case, camera or similar article in the owners hand wr ting and in gold leaf. The fact is the purchaser of a school bag, brief case, book, pocket book or leather folder or camera, at the time the] purchase is made may apply his or her own signatureito the article, or write his or her' name on'a slip of paper, which can be clamped in position by the machine over the gold leaf,

and the name traced or forced through upon the article, by means of an electric pencil.

Prior to the advent of the machine herein described, the gold leaf paper-has been held fiat by two strips or'by the hand, while an electric pencil may be used to write the name,

in which case the gold leaf transfers fast to the article.

In this method the gold leaf paper isvery apt to slip or become wrinkled, in which case the name would not be accurately and even-;

ly applied. 7

With the present type of machine it is the purpose toprovide a base plate provided with an elongated opening under which the gold leaf paper passes, the opening having marginal flanges turned down to. clamp'the gold leaf paper in position, inorder to hold the" gold leaf smooth and even, so that the name;

can be applied accurately, by means of an electric pencil which operates through the opening. i Another purpose is to provide, in amachine of this kind, a base plate provided with snap fasteners, which may cooperate with similarfasteners on the exterior of a pencil pouch'orcompartment' on a school bag, for the purpose of holding the base plate in posit1on, with the gold leaf paper positioned under the opening, to 'enable the name to be written with accuracy. 7

Still another purpose is to provide, in a machine of this kind supporting brackets for the roll of gold leaf, in conjunction with means on the base plate for drawing the goldleaf taut under the guide'opening. I

A further purpose istoprovide in a machine of this character, 'clampingmeans for a brief case, dress suit case, book, pocket book or folder, a camera or any other article, so that the article may be held in-position, with thebase plate hingedly supported on one of the clamps, making it possible to tilt the base plate to enable the operator to lnspeet the name at intervals during its appl1cat1on, in which case the base plate will fold back into position in register with the name being'applied.

A still further purpose is to provide a base board carrying the clamps, the board being supplied with scored lines horizontally and vertically,'so as'to'act as guides in placing the brief case or. other article in position, so that the name'canbe applied in asubstan tially horizontal position.

It is to be understood that the particulars herein given are in no way limitative," and that while stillkeeping within the scope ofthe invention, any desired modification of details and proportions may bemade in the construction of the appliance according to circumstances. a

These clamping clips are so positioned that the nubss35' carriedby the free ends of the clips may engage with the gold leaf, whenthe clips are positioned as in Figure 1 of the drawings. When the clips are disposed as in Figure l, the nubbed ends of the clips overlie the gold leaf, thereby holding the gold leaf in position while writing the name and transferring it on to the brief case or other article. In the act of moving the clips in order to overlie the gold leaf prior to passing through'the slot 30 and subsequently to leaving the slot 31, the frictional faction of thenubs of the clips act to draw thego'ld leaf taut, in a position under the elongated opening 26 in the base plate.

' The base plate 16 is provided with downwardly extending male snap fasteners 37,

' whichjmay enter female fasteners 38, which may be carried by a pencil pouch or pocket 39 of a school bag, for the purpose of holding the base plate 16 in position, while transferring an individuals name to the schoolbag. When using the base plate 16 for this purpose, it is possible to use it with or with-.

out the brackets. By using a base plate without the brackets the rollof goldleaf is very apt to come unwound, while with .thebrackets it is possible tofacilitatethe transferring of a name, for the reason that the roll of gold leaf is prevented from: unwinding. For example when the brackets are used, the clips to the front of the base plate may be disposed to overlie the gold'leaf where it-leaves the slot 31. At the time of moving the clips, the roll of gold leaf may beheld tight, by tightening "up on the screws, then afterwards the clips to the rear of the opening 26 may be moved toioverlie thegold leaf, and in this case the gold leaf under the opening 26 is is claimed-is:

3. In a writing guiding machine, a base plate having an elongated central opening underwhich gold leaf passes, means for retaining the base plate in fixed relation to the article to which a name is to be transferred by operating a heated tool upon the gold leaf at a point through the opening, said base plate having slotson opposite longitudinal sides of the opening through which the gold leaf passes to pass under the opening and be drawn taut, the longitudinal edges of the openings having downward flanges to bear against the gold leaf and hold itflat against the article to which the name is being transferred. f.

4. In a writing guiding machine, a base plate having an elongated central opening under which gold leaf passes, means for retainingthe base plate in fixed relation to the article to which aname is to be transferred by operating. a heated tool upon the gold leaf at a point through the opening said base plate having'slots on opposite longitudinal sides of the opening through which tie gold leaf passes to pass under the opening and be drawn taut, the longitudinal edges of the openings'having downward flanges to bear against the gold leaf and hold it flat against the article to which the name is being transferred, and means mounted upon the base plate and adapted to-overlie the gold leaf to hold it drawn taut.

5. In a writing guiding machine, a base plate provided with an elongated central openingbelow which a sheet of gold leaf from a roll passes, said base plate having slots adjacent opposite longitudinal sides of.

the opening through which the gold leaf passes, means mounted on the base plate to overlieand frictionally contact with the gold leaf at points beyond the slots to hold the gold leaf taut below the opening, and brashets provided with means for cooperating with a spindle of the roll of gold leaf, to

prevent unwinding of the roll.

In a writing guiding machine, the combination with a base plate provided with a central longitudinal opening, below which a sheet of gold leaf from a roll passes, of brackets rising from the base plate and provided with 'meansat their ends for engagement with a spindle of the roll of gold leaf to prevent the roll from unwinding, said base plate having slots adjacent'opposite sides of the opening through which the gold leaf passes to appear below the opening, spring clips carried by the'base plate and adapted to overlie the gold leaf at points beyond the slots to hold the gold leaf taut, upper and lower clamping bars, between which an article may be clamped, whereby a name may be transferred thereto at a point through the opening, and means operatively associated with the opposite ends of the clamping bars for permitting the upper clamping bar to be arranged in different adjusted positions,- and a base board on which the lower clamping bar is mounted, the upper surface of the base board having scored lines for facilitating the position of the article whereby the name transferred thereto may be applied with accuracy.

In a writing guiding machine, the combination with a base plate provided with a central longitudinal opening, below which a sheet of gold leaf from a roll passes, of brackets rising from the base plate and provided with means at their ends for engagement with a spindle of the roll of gold leaf to prevent the roll from unwinding, said base plate having slots adjacent opposite sides of the opening through which the gold leaf passes to appear below the opening, spring clips carried by the base plate and adapted to over lie the gold leaf at points beyond the slots to hold the gold leaf taut, upper and lower clamping bars, between which an article may be clamped, whereby a name may be transferred thereto at a point through the opening, and means operatively associated with the opposite ends of the clamping bars for permitting the upper clamping bar to be arranged in different adjusted positions, said last mentioned means comprising guide rods on the lower clamping bars, collars on the rods and provided with diametrically opposite grooves, the upper clamping bars having I bifurcations to engage the grooves and straddle the collars, and means for holding the collars in different adjusted positions, on the rods, whereby articles of different heighth may be clamped in position, and a base board on which the lower clamping bar is mounted, the upper surface of the base board having scored lines for facilitating the positions of the article whereby the name transferred thereto may be applied with accuracy.

15. In a writing guiding machine, a base plate having an elongated opening under which gold leaf passes, means for retaining the base plate in fixed relation to an article to which a name is to be transferred by operating a heated tool upon'the gold leaf at a point through the opening.

16. In a writing guiding machine, a base plate having an elongated opening under which gold leaf passes, means for retaining the base plate in fixed relation to an article to which a name is to be transferred by operating a heated tool upon the gold leaf at a point through'the opening, said base plate having means on opposite longitudinal sides of the opening to permit the passage of the gold leaf to pass under the opening and be drawn taut. i

17. In a writing guiding machine, a base plate having an elongated opening under which gold leaf passes, means forretaining the base plate in fixed relation to an article to which a name is to be transferred by operating a heated tool upon the gold leaf at a point through the opening, said base plate having means on opposite longitudinal sides of the opening to permit the passage of the gold leaf to pass under the opening and be drawn taut, and means adjacent the "last named means and adapted to engage the gold leaf at points where it passes through the plate to hold the gold leaf taut under the .be drawn taut, and means adjacent the last named means and'adapted to engage the gold leaf at points where itfpasses through the plate to the opening, the longitudinal edges of the hold the gold leaf taut underopenlng having downward flanges to bear against the gold leaf and hold it flat against the article to which the name is being trans- I ferred.
