Description

G. JE'NNINGS. -WASH-BASINAND SINK COMBINED.
Patented Fb.e,1s77.
TATES PATENT FFIGE`- GEORGE J EN NIN GIS, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,147, dated February 6, 1877; application filed September 14, 1876.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE JENNINGS, of London, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in WashBasin and Sink Combined, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l represents aY perspective view, partly' in section, the basin being partially tipped over. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section. Fig. 3 is a front View, partly in section, the platform which supports the `basin being raised. y
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a wash -basin which is hung in gudgeons overapan or sink which connects with the sewer, so that the basin can be conveniently emptied simply by turning it on its gudgeons. The platform which supports the basin is also hung on gudgeons, so that the same can be raised up either for the purpose of emptying the basin or to give free access to the pan below. With the pan and its discharge-opening is combined a chamber containing two partitions7 which are curved in opposite directions, and the edges of which overlap each other, so as to form a seal for preventing noxious odors or gases from passing up into the house.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a wash-stand, in which is secured the basin B. This basin is provided with gudgeons a,which have their bearings inlugs b, Fig. 3, secured to the under surface of the top of the stand A, so that said basin can be tipped up, as indicated in Fig. l, or turned down to the position shown in Fig. 2.
The top of the stand may be made of inarble or any other suitable material in one solid piece, and in this case the basin can be emptied simply by turning the same on its gudgeons, there being no opening in the bottom part of said basin.
In most eases, however, I prefer to provide the top of the stand with a tilting platform, O, which swings ou gudgeons o, so that it can be turned up to the position shown in Fig. 3 or down to the position shown in Figs. l and 2, and if this tilting platform is used the basin B may be rigidly attached thereto or made in one solid piece with the same, of any material suitable for the purpose.
Beneath the top of the stand A is situated a sink, D, on the bottom of which is secured a pan, E, which communicates with the wastepipe F through an opening, d, Fig. 2. This opening, however, does not communicate directly with the waste-pipe, but it leads into a chamber, G,which is provided with two curved partitions, ef, the edges of which overlap each other, as shown in Fig. 2, so that a certain quantity of water is retained in the chamber G, and thereby a liquid seal is formed which cuts off a direct communication between the waste-pipe and the interior of the house.
By these means I have produced a washbasin which can be made with an unbroken interior surface, and which can be quickly emptied by turning it on its gudgeons or by raising the platform C to the position shown in Fig. 3. Furthermore, by raising this platform, free access is obtained to the sink for the purpose of emptying slops, which pass down into the waste-pipe without coming in contact with any portion ofthe Wash-basin.
In the top of' the stand A are depressions g for the reception of soap or other articles.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The wash-basin B hung in gudgeons Within the tilting platform C, the two being combined with a sink, D, and a pan, E, which connects with a sewer, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the tilting wash-basin B, the tilting platform (J, in which said basin is journaled, the sink D, the pan E, the chamber G, and the two curved partitions, arranged in said chamber so as to overlap each other, forlcontaining Water in the chamber to form a seal, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 14th day of August, 1876.
GEORGE J ENNIN GS.
