Pumps of this general type are disclosed in 1;? Patents 1,619,285 and 1,619,286, granted arch 1, 1927. An object of an improved pump of this type having a rotor and casin of improved form, and proective means for sealin the fluid raceway or passageway against lea age.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pump which may be cheaply manufactured and readily assembled, and which is through extended periods without adjustment or repair. hese and other objects of the invention havin to do with the provision of a pump, whic is efiicient and positive in operation, will become clearer as the description proceeds in connection with the preferred embodiment of the invention shown in ing. wherein Figure 1 is a front elevational view with a portion of the casing broken away, and

ihe casing has'a main section 10 forming an interior chamber. 11 which receives the rotor 12 having a hub 13 receiving a shaft 14 to which the rotor is secured, as by means of a pin 15. The shaft extends through a hearing 16 to the exterior of the casing where it may have associated therewith any suitable rotating means, such as the pulley 17. The bearing 16 may be sealed against leakage as by means of packing 18 and a glandnut 19 threaded within the bearing 16.
The rotor is of substantially cupped formaa rim portion 20, the inner and outer surfaces 21 and 22 of which adjacent the rim margin substantially parallel the rotor axis. The channel is in substantially annular formation, but does not extend at the top of the casing between the inlet port 24 and outlet port 26, as illustrated in F1 re 2, the casing portion 10" bein there ormed to fit closely against the expose edges of the blades to prevent liquid from passing the outlet port back to the inlet ort. The casing thus serves to deflect fluid iro'm the raceway through the outlet port. To assist in supporting the rotor, the casing section 10 may be rovided with a centrally disposedportion 2 providing a bearing for the end of the shaft 14 which extends throu h the rotor into a bush'ng 28 fitted closely wit in the bearing. Thisportio'n of the casing may be secured to the casing 10 in any suitable manner, as by the screws 29.
At opposite sides of the blades 23 and of the raceway 25, the casing and rotor have a sealing engagement, for the purpose of making the raceway substantiall' liquid-tight. The rotor is rovided at opposite sides of the casing with t e sealing surfaces 30 which are disposed in planes inclined relative to the. axis of the rotor, and parallel to one another. These surfaces are spaced along the axis so 5 that they are disposed, respectively, in diiferent radial planes and, as will be observed, they are also disposed at different radial distances from the axis or, in other words, they are readily spaced from one another. These surfaces cooperate with the coacting surfaces 31 upon the casing section 10", and the co, acting surfaces'are provided with interen- I gaging ribs'and-grooves 32. This construction permits a relatively close fit between the rotor and easing, which will efliciently seal" the liquid within the raceway for extended periods of operation, and any excessive clearance resulting from wear may be taken up no by adjustment of the rotor.
" As will be head, the casing has behind the rotor a considerable space mto which any derstood liquid seeping from the raceway may ass through an opening 33 in the rotor. Ihe space of the opening 33 will balance the pres sure of any escaping liquid against the rotor on opposite sides thereof, and will the liquid to pass into the interior of the chamber 11 behind the rotor and lubricate the device.
In the 0 ration of the pump, it will be unat the fluid'passes lnto. the raceway through the inlet port 24, and operation of the rotor by means of power applied to the \pulley 17 in a counter clockwise irection will I 1 cause the blades to en age the fluid repeatedly as it passes throng the raceway and impart impulses thereto. The liquid, as 1t 5 p advances in the raceway, will repeatedly pass into and out of the buckets, the frequency of engagement with the buckets varying in accordance with the back ressure at the outlet.
High back pressure at e outlet will tend to lengthen the ath of the fluid by increasing the number 0 times it is subjected'to the action of the rotor.
- Obviously, theinvention is not limited to it the details of the construction illustrated and described, and numerous modifications will v occur to one skilled in the art without depart- 7 ing from the essence of the invention, wh ch is set forth in the following claims. t
Having thus described my invention, what claim 1s: v 1. A pump comprising a rotor having a plurality of blades formmg'buckets having mouths opening inwardly toward the rotor axis and a casing making a substantially liquid tight seal with the rotor besides the buckets whereby to form with the buckets a fluid p ageway, said casing having inletand outlet port 2. A pump comprising a rotor having a lurality of inwardly directed blades formmg buckets having mouths opening inwardly toward the rotor axis, and a casing having a I substantially annularchannel facing said buckets whereby to form a liquid passageway, said casing having inlet and outlet ports and making a substantially liquid tight seal with the rotor besidethe buckets and a the raceway.

A pump comprising a rotor having a rim, a p urality of inwardly directed blades on the inner surface of said rim forming a lurality of inwardly opening buckets and- 5 a casing having a portion making a substantially 11 uid tight seal with the rotor beside said buc ets and forming with the latter-a substantially liquid tight passageway, said casing having inlet and outlet ports comf Inunicating with said pway, and prorotor having a rim portion provided on its inner surface with a plurality of inwardly directed blades formin inwardly opening buckets and sealing sur aces at opposite sides of said buckets.

In a pump, a rotor having a rim portion provided on its inner surface with aplurality of inwardly directed blades forming inwardly opening buckets and sealing surfaces at opfposite sides of said buckets, one sealing sur ace being disposed substantially radially inwardly and the other radially outwardl from the buckets, said sealing surfaces ing inclined relative to the rotor axis.-

In a pump, a rotor having a rim por-- tion provided on its inner surface with a plurzlity of inwardly directed blades forming inwardly opening buckets and sealing surfaces at opposite sides of said buckets, said sea-ling surfaces :being inclined relative to the rotoraxis and in substantally parallel as planes.

A pump comprising a rotor having a plurality of inwardly directed blades forming buckets having mouths opening inwardly. toward the rotor axis a casing facing said buckets whereby to' form a liquid passageway, said casing having inlet and outlet ports with the rotor at both sides of the buckets and the raceway, and liquid deflecting means interposed between the inlet and outlet ports and closely fitting the exposed edges of the 5s blades to deflect liquid from the-passageway through the outlet port.

A cupshaped rotor having a pluralitfy of blades forming buckets on the inner sur ace of the rimthereof, said buckets opening inwardly toward the rotor axis at substantially a right angle thereto, a casin for said rotor having a portion-making a su stantially liquid-tight seal therewith at op osite sides of the buckets, said casing an rotor having at opposite sides. of the buckets sealing surfaces inclined relative to the rotor axis, with the surfaces at one side substantially parallel to the surfaces at the other side.
