Time cards are frequentlyissued to workmen for special work, and the workmans name and identification number, the timeat which he starts work on the special job, the
department from which he i'sassigned to the work, and the order number are usually printedupon the card, and, according to one phase of the invention, all ofthis datais printed in one printing operation on the time card. At the conclusion of the days work sented and the time printed thereon by the time printing mechanism of the machine.
' The machine embodies a plurality of printelements for. printing words, figures, names of workmen, or the -like,fand. the date and the time of day in association therewith, and, if desired, other data, such as a department number and the order number of the job, or thelike. The machinefurther embodies means whereby any selected word printing element may be quickly brought into printing position adjacent the time printing means of the time printing mechanism, whereby a time card may be qluickly andac i s of construc-. tion of the machine for accomplishing this result will now be described.
Referring to said drawings, which illustrate one embodiment ofthe present invens 'tion, the reference character '14: designates on this job, the time card is again prethe machine.
For printingon a time card a selected word or words, letters or figures,"as, for instance,
the name and identification numberef an employee, one or more carriers 22 are provided for the word rintingelements. and inxflth'e:
c 7 I I present embodiment of the invention, two
such carriers are illustrated. 'Con-veniently,
eachcarrier may be composed of spaced disks 23 and 2% mounted on a shaft 25 and adapted to support a multiplicity of circumferentiall'y disposed type or plate holders 26. The type or plate holders 26'eXtend' between the endmost disks 23 and are removably and replaceably secured thereon by pins 27 which V extend through the type holders and through the type or plates and through apertures and notches formed in the end disks 23, as seen in Figs. 7, 8 and 9. The type holders and type or plates form the printing elements, referred to,
that print a'selected word .or words, figures, and the like, such as an employees name and identification number.
tVhile the exact construction of the type holders isimmaterial, the oiieshown has been chosen for; the purpose of illustrating the nvention. As shown, the: type holders are of channel-like formation iEnwhich the type or plates are held, and when plates are employed,

In order to holdtheicarriage frame and parts. carried thereby in 1115 either of its, selected, positions, springzactuated detents 41. are provided, one at each end of the main frame 14, which engage in depressions or sockets 42 formed in a side face lof the carriage frame 30. In order to hold the carriers 22 in any of their selectefd'posi- Itions, spring detents43,: one for each type of any of the well known types usedin time stamps, time clocks, and workmens timerecordin apparatus, and as the construction thereof is well understood, no detailed description is necessary so far as this specification is concerned. The type wheels 46 of the time. printing mechanism are arranged to print in alignment with the type or plates carried by the type holders 26.
and the wall 17 of the frame 14 is mounted a number, or the like, on the timecard. 'Thetype wheels 49 are rotatably mounted on a shaft 50 carried by the frame of the machine,
and each type wheel 49 is provided on one side with a toothed wheel 51 which meshes with a'rack bar 52 slidably mounted in grooved guide members 53 carr1ed by the frame of the machine. The rack bars 52 are provided with upstanding fingers 54 on one end which pro-' 7 ject up through slots in the cover plate 20 and furnish means, whereby the rack bars may be adjusted back and forth to set the type wheels 49 to print any selected identification number.
In order to aid the attendant in setting the type wheels 49 to any selected identification number, indicating wheels 55, one for each type wheel 49, are provided on which are the digits 0 to 9 and letters of the alphabet corresponding with those on the type wheels 49, and said indicating wheels may be viewed through a slot 56formed in the top plate 20. Each wheel 55 is provided with a toothed wheel 57, on one side thereof, which meshes with the rack bar 52- which operates the type wheel 49 associated therewith. The wheels are rotatably mounted upon a shaft 58 carried by the frame of the machine. Spring detents 59 engage in socket-s or depress-ions in the wheels and hold, them and therewith the rack bars 52 and type wheels 49. in any adjusted position.
For making an impression upon the time card, or other sheet, an ink ribbon 60 is provided which extends underneath the slot 21 and is carried by spools 61 and 62. The spools are mounted on shafts 63 and 64 carried by the frame of the machine, and mechanism is provided for rotating the spool 61 in a step by step manner to thereby advance the ink ribbon, and, as shown, said spool actuating mechanism comprises a toothed wheel 65 on the shaft 63 and a pawl 66 connected by a. link 68-to a spring operated lever 67 which isactuated in one direction by the impression making element of the. machine. The shaft 64 of the other spool 62 may berotated from a crank 69 by beveled gears70 and 71 mounted on a shaft 64 and the shaft of the crank 69. p I
A rubber or other impression bar72 00- operates with the ink ribbon 60 and type face of the printing mechanism to make the -impression upon the time card or other sheet. -he impression bar is carried by a stiff plate or bar 73.5which is mounted on rods'74 connected at their upper ends by a knob 76 and guided in a guide member 75. Coiled compression springs 77 interposed between the knob 76 and upper endsof the guide member serve to retract the impression bar after it has been struck down after making an impression on the time card. The guide mem berfor the impression bar is bolted or otherwise secured-to the main frame of the ma chine and extends upward and overhangs the slot 21 of the top plate 20.
In Fig. 5 is shown a time card A containing data printed thereon'by the machine illustrated. The data shown on the card is, of course, only illustrative of what may be printed by the machine.
In the operation of the machine, the attendant moves the carriage frame 30 to the proper position to, bring the carrier22', containing. the set type or plate for a given employees identification number and name, into the prlntlng location and then turns the hand or pointer 34' to the number on the dial 35 corresponding to the identification number of the employee, which brings the set type or plate containing the employees identification number andname into printing position directly under the slot 21. If an order number is used, the attendant manipulates the rack strikes 'down the knob-7 6, thereby bringing the compression bar down upon the card and maklng the imprint or impression thereon. In this manner all .of the necessary informatlon, namely, the identification number and name of the'employee, the department,
the date and time of day, and the order numbars 52 to set the type wheels49 so as to print ber, is printed upon theitime card in .one
operation. At the conclusion of the work performed by the employee,tl1e time card places .the time card over the slot'21 and 1 V elements, such as plates, set type, and the like,
