This invention relates to a method of and means for handling cut blanks used in the production of forgings.
. Under some conditions it is most convenient to make forgings from out blanks rather than from a bar of stock. However, there are many forgings which cannot be made from out blanks because the means used for holding the blanks interferes with the flow of lo the metal in the dies. It has been found that if sufiicient clearance is cut in the dies for the tongs ordinarily employed, the metal will flow into this clearance and result in a defective forging.
- It is an object of the present invention to provide simple and eflicient means for holding a blank, the construction of this means being such as 'to permit the production of apertured forgings, undercut forgings, and a0 'forgings of other types and shapes which could not be made heretofore from out blanks.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain steps of the method and certain details of construction hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that. changesmay be made in the method and the apparatus used without departingfrom the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawings the invention has been clearly illustrated.

Figure 6 is. a section through a portion of the blank holder in position between the gripping dies, a blank being shown positioned in the holder prior to being shaped by the shaped.
Figure 8 is a view similar to Figure 7 showing how a blank may be shaped into a forging having a circular groove or the like in one end.
Figure 9 is a section through the gripping dies and the blank holder showing the structure used when it is desired to produce a pierced forging by means of a punch a portion of which has been shown in elevation in said figure.
. Figure 10 is a view showing a portion of the structure illustrated in Figure 9 and illustrating how the piercing of the forging is com leted.
In igure 1 aportion of the bed of a forgin machine has been indicated at 1 and the rippin dies of the machine have been ilustrate been shown at 4 and carries a tool 5 for working between the dies 2 and 3. The movable die 3 can be operated by any suitable mechanism indicated enerally at 6. It is to be understood that in Fi re 1 the parts of the machine have been in icated, to a certain extent, in diagram.
For the purpose of handling blanks tongs of special construction are provided. These tongs include op osed jaws 7 having arms 8 extending there rom and pivotally connected as at 9. The grippin dies 2 and 3 are provided with any desire depressions 10 in which portionsof the forgin s can be shaped. The meeting faces of the d ies. 2 and 3 are also formed with clearances 11 and into these are adapted to fit snugl the outer faces of the jaws 7 The inner aces of the jaws are cut to form die spaces as shown at 12 so that the jaws 7 of the tongs are, in efiect, dies in which a portion of a forging wlll be shaped.
In practice the heated blank is grip ed at one end between the jaws 7 and placed etween the gripping jaws 2 and 3 so that the at 2 and 3. The header slide has said jaws 7 Wlll'be received within the clearances 11 and pressed firmly together when thereto including jaws adapted to' grip and house one end of the blank, said jaws being insertable between the gripping dies and within the clearances, said ripping dies constituting means for holding the jaws pressed together and against axial movement, means movable between the gri ping dies for gripping dies and pressing the other end of the blank back between the jaws, and means on the jaws for recessing that end of the blank housed between the jaws when the blank is subjected to end pressure, said'jaws and recessing means, when released from the dies, being removable from the blank solely in a direction axial of the blank.
6. A means for handling and shaping short blanks including opposed relativelymovable jaws cooperating to provide a cavity extending thereinto from one end, pivotally connected handles extending from the other end of the jaws, separable gripping dies recessed to receive and grip the closed jaws, the handles of the gripped jaws projecting outwardly from the dies in position to be grasped and shifted by the operator, the cavity in the jaws constituting means for holding one end of a short blank with its other end protruding from the jaws, and
means for placing the blank under pressure to shape it within the cavity.
7. A means for handling and shaping short metal blanks including gripping dies having recesses in the working faces thereof, opposed relatively movable jaws providing a cavity extending thereinto from one end for the reception of one end of the blank, pivotally connected handles extending from the other end of the jaws and adapted to be grasped by the operator to move the jaws into and out of position in the recesses in the faces of the dies, and pressure means for engaging the blank and shaping it between the jaws seated in the recesses, the walls of the recesses cooperating with the jaws to hold said jaws against displacement in any direction rela tive to the dies when subjected to the action of the pressure means.
8. A means for producing a forging with a recessed end which comprises gripping dies adapted to be moved toward and from each other having recesses in the working faces thereof, relatively movable jaws removably seated in the recesses and held against longitudinal movement by the walls of the recesses,
said jaws providing a cavity open at one end,
a projection in the other end of the cavity extending toward the open end of the cavity, pressure means working between the dies for engaging one end of the blank and shaping the other end between the jaws and around the projection whereby the blank, while seated in the cavity, will lock the j aws against separation, and handles extending from the jaws adapted to be grasped by the operator to remove the jaws and blank from between the opened dies and release the shaped blank from the jaws.
9. A means for producing a forging with a recessed end which comprises gripping dies adapted to be moved toward and from each other having recesses in the working faces shaping one end of a held blan against said thereof, relatively movable jaws removably seated in the recesses and held against longitudinal movementby the walls of the recesses, said jaws providing a cavity open at one end,
a projection in the other end of the cavity extending toward the open end of the cavity, pressure means working between the dies for engaging one end of the blank and shaping the other end between the jaws and around the projection whereby the blank, while seated in the cavity, will lock the jaws against separation, and means extending from the jaws at that end thereof remote from the open end of the cavity, for removing the locked aws from between the dies to permit release of the blank and jaws.
10. A means for producing a forging with a recessed end which comprises gripping dies adapted to be moved toward and from each other having recesses in the working faces thereof, relatively movable jaws removably seated in ,the recesses and held against longitudinal movement by the walls of the recesses, said jaws providing a cavity open at one end, a projection in the other end of the cavity, extending toward the open end of the cavity, pressure means working between the dies for engaging one end of the blank and shaping the other end between the jaws and around the projection whereby the blank, while seated in the cavity, will lockthe jaws against providing a recess having a shoulder, blankhandling tongs having relatively movable jaws detachably seated in said recess and providing a cavity for housing one end of a blank the other endof which rojects from the cavity, said jaws being siiaped to receive end thrust from the blank in the cavity, pressure means for shaping the projecting end of the blank against the dies and jaws and for shaping the housed end of the blank by extrusion within the cavity, the shoulder and jaws cooperating to hold the jaws against displace ment relative to the gripping dies when subjected to the action of the pressure means.
12. Apparatus for producing from a short blank a forging with a depression in one end,
including separable movably connected jaws having a blfankholding cavity open at one end and rovided in its other end-with a projection, ies'movable to grip the jaws and hold them against movement relative thereto, and a heading tool movable between the gripping dies to engage one end of the held blank and shape the opposite end thereof about the projection in the cavit p m 13. A paratus for producing rom a short blank a orging with a depression in one end, including separable movably connected jaws having a blank holdin cavity open at one end and closed at its other end, means on the respective jaws cooperating to provide a projection in the cavity at the closed end thereof, dies movable to grip the jaws and hold them against movement relative thereto, and a heading tool movable between the grippin 29 dies to engage one end of the held blank-and 4 shape the opposite end thereof aboutthe projection in the cavity.
