WHIT- Loox PATENTS, INC., or LAs VEGAS, NEVADA, AfcoRroRA'rroN oF NEVADA PRINTING PRESS Heretofore numerous attempts have been made to design a machine of this character which would comply with the requirements of the laws governing the use of such a press and especially With Vrespect to prevent its surreptitious or fraudulent use; the principal object of my invention is to provide a relatively simple, compact, and durable machine embodying the requisite functional characteristics aforesaid, in which impressions cannot be made, Without being accounted for, and in Which `false records or readings of meters cannot behidden, or which cannotbe fraudulently adjusted or tampered with even by custodians of the keys to the press, Without leaving evidence thereof.

Permanently attached to the left end of crank shaft 22 is the main-recording meter bevel gear 57 which engages with and actuates a secondary meter bevel gear 58, which is attached to the lower end of and drives recording meter vertical drive shaft 59, the saidV shaft 59 being held in position by and passing through bearings 60 which are located in and a part of frame 61; drive shaft 59 has securely fastened to its upper end worm gear 62 which engagesand actuates gear Wheel 63, said gear wheel 63 l being mounted on and actuating the main shaft 64 `of the recording meter 65A, main shaft 64 passes through and operates decimal wheels 65, which are enclosed by permanent casing 66, which is fastened to and is a part of the recording meter frame 6l, and which is provided with a glass covered port 67 through which the said decimal wheels 65 may be read; said frame 6l together with the casing 66are mounted on a standard post 68, which is secured by screws 69 to base plate 20; the parts referred to in the foregoing section jof this paragraph are best illustrated in Figs. 2 andV 6. The assembled parts mentioned in the foregoing section of'this paragraph constitutev a recording met r 65--A` Vwhich successively records the number of impressions made by the printing mechanism and is actuated directly fromr the crank shaft 22 by the main bevel gear 57 on crank shaft 22 which meshes with and actuates secondary bevel gear 58 on vertical shaft 59 and worm gear 62 which engages gear wheel 63 on main shaft 64. This recording meter 65-A records one by one each impression as made'and `pro vides an accurate methodof determining the total number of impressionsA made by the printing mechanism.l Y i On crank shaft 22, located between right hand crank shaft bearing 21y and ratchet wheel 50, is permanently secured to said' shaft 22 control meter main bevel gear 70, which meshes with andl actuatesa secondary bevel gear 71, which is permanently fastened to the lower end of and drives control meter vertical' drive shaft 72, which shaft 72 is held in and passes through bearings 73, which are secured to and are a part of control meter frame 74o; tothe upper end of shaft 72 is securely fastened wormr gear 75,V which meshes with and actuates gear wheel' 76, which is v permanently secured on control meter main shaft 77, which passes through and operates decimal wheels ofmeter 78, and bot-h ends of said shaft 77 pass through and revolve in the control meter frame 74; the frame 74 is secured to and is al part of frame post 79 which sets'upon and is secured to base plate 20l by screws 80. l
The guard boX 29 and the printing member L10 operate downwardly against the yieldable platen 81, which is located in the forward end 'of bas-e plate 20 and operates in platen plate opening 82; platen' stops 83, secured by screws 811 to the lower side of said platen,-limit the upward movement thereof, the said stops 83 jare provided onV their upper surface with noiseless bumpers 85; platen 81 is provided on its u per surface with a yieldable cushion 86, preferably of rubber or similar material, and tensioned by coil 'spring 87 ,-1 confined at its upper end by platen cone 88, fastened on the lower side ofthe center of platen 81, and said spring 87 on its .lower end encirclesspring stud 89, which is a part of platen spring hanger 90, said hanger 90 is securely fastened by screws 91 to the under side of base plate 20; the said platen 81 being thus constructed with a cushion surface and tensioned by a single centrally located spring 87 provides a universallyyieldable platen which automatically adjusts itself to a uniform pressure through the varying thicknesses and irregular surfaces of the matter placed over it, to the type with which the indicia is printed, on the said matter, thus providing a uniform legible indicia.

Trip lever 115 is further suspended at the rear by hanger pin 124 in hanger 125, which is secured by screws 126 to the underside of base plate 20. On control meter 7 8, on the right hand side and secured to the face of and in alignment with decimal wheel 7 8-D, is reset plunger carriage 127, which is rockably mounted on shaft 77, said carriage 127 has operating within it plunger 128, held under tension by spring 129; this Vplunger rests upon the face of decimal wheel hereinafter described, env130 in said wheel '78-C5 127 is Vprovided on top with 78-C, and, as gages in notch plunger carriage Ya bearing'131 containing opening 132 5 vspring 133 is curved at its upward end to engage plunger 128, and its lower end is securely fastened to frame 74; decimal wheel 7 8-D has on its forward side, two pins 134, which engaging against the edges of frame 74, limit the motion of said wheel 7 8-D to the distance between said pins, or one decimal point. When control'meter decimal wheels 7 8-A, 78B, 78-C and 78--D have revolved to the limit ofthe number of impressions to be recorded, which in the use of four of these wheels as limited by pins 134, would indi-v cate one thousand, slots 123 come into align' ment in such a position that the face of iinger 121 vdrops into the said slots 123, thus releasing lever 118, rodr116, trip lever115, which allowsratchet arm 102 under the tension of spring 104 to drop to* and rest upon the lower end of lock ratchet trip arm 107, which arm 107 on its neXt forward move,- ment engages-through its pawl 114 with tooth 106 in arm 102 and forces said arm 102 forward to the limit of its movement, and being engaged with latch 97-A pulls latch 97 -A into the locked position against crank shaft 22, making it impossible to operate the machineuntil the meter has been reset. Side plate 200 has a cavity designed to re ceive a seal containing device having a positioning ring 138, a retaining ring 136 to V145 secured by screws 146 has connected to it shaft 147 riding in bearing plate 148 secured by screws 149. Said bearing plate 148 has another bearing150 for lever 151, secured by pin 152. One end of lever 151 is shaped as at 153to lengage cam 154 keyrelated to shaft 147. Unitary movement is controlled by ratchet wheel 155 key related to shaft 147, and engaged by spring pawl 156 secured by screws 157.k Shaft 147 has key related to it, cam 158, Voperating against lever 159 mounted by pin 160 to hanger 161 secured by screws 162, which is secured at 163 to rod 164, which operates thru opening in plate 20 and connected by pin 166 in opening 132 of bearing 131 of plunger carriage 127.
The action of turning the lock 145 and r0- tating shaft 147 unlocks the locking mechanism ofthe press and resets Vcontrol meter 7 8 to a predetermined number, by the melchanical operation Aof cam 154 first engaging release lever 153 of lever 151 which by lifting trip lever end 115 raises Yratchet arm 102 to apoint where the'tooth 106 is disengaged from the pawl 114, at which point of movement pin 167 operated by shaft 147engages stud 168 on the forward end of ratchet arm 102 and by a rotary motion lifts yand pushes back to its original unlocked position said arm 102, which being connected to latch 971-14 drops the said latch from its engaged or locked position against link 37, thus releasing crank shaft 22 for free operations; said ratchet arm 102 when being moved into locked position is guidedpast pin 167 by spring rguide 169, which is secured by screws 170 to the lower side of plate 95, and said ratchet arm 102 resumes lits original position sideways undertension ofla pin 171 tensioned by spring 172 in carriage 173, which is securely fastened by screws174 to the side of base plate 20; the next continuance step evolved from the rotation of shaft 14,7 by lock 145 is the action, of cam 158 on reset lever arm 159 which pulls down reset connecting rod 164 and resetting the meter to the original predetermined number of the movements. W hen decimal wheel 78-D has been rotated to a point where guide pin 134 rests against the edge of frame 74 and causes said decimal wheel 78-G operating through plunger 128, the plunger carriage 127, to raise plunger carriage 127 and its connections through arm 164, reset lever arm 159, to such a position that its forward end will engage with the cam 158 on shaft 147, thus the operation of rotating shaft 147 reverses the action just described and by pulling down plunger carriage 127 to its original position, automatically resets decimal wheel 7 8-D to the yposition of a predetermined number of impressions to bemade. rhus thecontrol meter 78 maybe set upon completion ofa predetermined number of impressions for another predetermined number by adjustment of saidV may be substituted for the broken seal when iiange 136 `is replaced and automatically locked by the described latches 140.
Base plate 20 has on its upper face a guide strip 175, which is continuous on said base plate `20 around the parts of the mechanism which are located on the'rear section of the press above the base plate 20,see Fig. 2, and which guide strip 175 ts inside of a lock boxY -17 6 which rests snugly upon the top oi base plate 20, and completely surrounds and protects the various parts of the press .located within it; said lock box 17 6 has on its lower edge and constructed as a part of it, slotted lugs 177, one o-n either side, which pass through openings 178 which arepro'- vided for the same in base plate 20. On the lower side of base plate 20 the said lugs 177 engage with spring latches 17 9 riding in guides 180 and held under tension by springs 181; the said latches 17 9 are released by and connected to arms 182, whichare a part of shaft 1.83 supported yby hanger 184, the said shaft 183 is operated b-y connecting link 185, which through pin 186 and lock arm 187 and lock bolt 188 are operated by lock 189, which is securely fastened to the under side of base plate 20 by screws 190.
The locking mechanism for the boxes is operated through lock 189, which is protected by means identical to the recited means adjacent to lock 145 and comprising a retainingring 192,7with an annulus 195, positionf ing ring 194:, latches 196, dogs 198er and spring 198,v frame 192, screws 190, barrel 188, arm l187', pin 186, which connects to and operates lever 183 engaging at 182 with spring 181 tensioned latches 179 in carriage 180'engag`- ing pins 177 protruding thru holes 178 in plate 20, to operate to lock or unlock the box.
Base plate 20 has integral with its lower side a box-like structure 200, which surrounds all the mechanism of the press located beneath the base plate 20 'and extending down to a point below any of the said mechanism,
and having on its right side toward the rear,
the recited opening 22e-A for revolving crank shaft 22'through which an actuatingmeans may pass to engage and operate with a rotary motion, by either manual or mechanical power, said shaft 22; designed to fit securely into an openingV in the bottom of. sides 200 is lock bottom plate 201, which engages at the front end with'iian ge 202, by means of iiange socket 203, the other three sides of the plate whenV placed in position againstthe sides 200 rest against a continuous guide strip 204, thus preventing surreptitious access, and. the said plate 201 is further provided with lugs 205 which are integral with said plate 201 and which are threaded to receive screws 206 which are inserted from the top `through openings4 207 in base plate 20, thus having their heads 208 above said base plate 20 and situated within the before described lock box 176. The operation of breaking the seal and unlocking and removing lock box 176 further provides access to the heads vof the screws 206, which,when removed, allow bottom plate 201to be removed, providing accessto all of the 'parts of the press located below 4 base plate 20; thus is provided by and n the said lock box 176 an eHective means of preventing any person fromv obtaining access to the parts of the mechanism contained .therein during such timeas the said lock box 17 6 may be locked. Lock box 17 6 is provided with a port 210, through which printing arm 89 passes and operates, and `port 211 through which passes and operates guard box arms'26, the said armsp-26 and `39 operating the various partsv of the printing'mechanismv as hereinbefore described in the front'section of the press, the lock. with a glass covered port 212 over the recording meter 65-A,'through which readings of said meter 65-A'may be made, and also a similar glass covered port 213 over the control meter 78. p
Over and above and completely surrounding all of the mechanism of base plate 20, 4including the lock box 176, is outer removable case 214, 'which has at its front end a platen opening 215, through whichV matter may be g3 placed in position to receive impressions of the indicia; at a point immediately back of platen 81 is shield guide216, againstfwhich any matter to be printed may-rest, and which lprecludes access to any point beyond said guide 216. Said outer case 214 is provided with a' glass covered port 218 directly overV port 212, through which readings of the recording meter 65-A may be made, and also a similar glass covered port 219 through which readings of the control meter 78 may be made.
What I claim is:
1 In a printing press, in combination, a printing member; type secured thereto; a
box-17 6 is further Yprovided w guard box surroi'inding the said lprinting member and the said type; a type shield rockl ably mounted on and within said guard box;
v an ink p'ad secured to said type shield; an inkt ing roller revolubly mounted in said guard box and in contact with said ink pad; a ten- 'sion springsecured to said printing member 'and tensioning said type shield; means to actuate said printing member within said guard box to make impressions; means to actuate said guard boxto hold said matter before, .1720
during and until said impression operation is completed; means to retain in contact with` and remove from the faceof said type, 'said ink pad during said operation; means to operatesaid type shield to cover said type; means to remove said type shield from over said type during said `printing operation.'
2. In a printing press, in combination a base plate, printing means mounted thereon, matter lioldingfmeansmounted-on said base plate, said holding means-forming a guard box for the printing means; a recording meter and a control meter mounted on saidbase plate, and enclosed by a lock case; a crank shaft mounted under said base plate, and actuating the said printingrmeans, said holding means, said control meter and said recording meter, and enclosed securely within a lower lock case; means to operate the said crank shaft while locked within the said lower lock case; means to operate the guard box outside of and from within the said upper lock case while same is locked; means to VAoperate Vthe printing member outside of and from Within the said upper lock case while same is locked to said base plate; means to operate the control meter from outside of and through the lock cases while same are locked tothe said base plate; means to lock said lock cases; means to seal said locks in said lock cases. Y
3. In a printing press, a base plate;printing mechanism mounted on said plate; an upper case to enclose said mechanism; a case below said plate having a detachable bottom; locking lugs securedto theY upper case and adapted to project through said plate into the lower case; means'mounted on said plate to engage said lugs and lock said upper case to said plate; means projecting through saidY plate to engage and hold the bottom `of the lower case positioned, said means being inacc-essable when the upper case is positionedand locked; and means to release the means that engage said locking lugs.
4. kIn a printing press, in combination, a base plate, a guard box arm mounted thereon, Va crank shaft rotatably mounted on the under side of said base plate, a cam mounted on said crank shaft, a roller mounted on the end of said guard box arm; means to tension said guard box arm roller against said crank shaft cam and to raise said guard box arm after each movement of a printingy operation, coordinately with the revolutions of said cam. y
5. In a printing press of the character described, a base plate; a rockably mounted printing member thereon; a rockably mounted guard member thereon; an inlring roller mounted on said printing member; an inking pad to supply ink to the printing member mounted in said guard member and said inking roller adapted to supply and distribute ink on said inlring pad at each normal movement of the said roclrably mounted printing member and guard member.
6. In a printing press, in combination, a base plate; printing mechanism above and below said plate and secured thereto; a case enclosing the mechanism above said plate, means enclosing'the mechanism below said plate, said Vlast means having a removable member; means passing through said base platetohold said removable member positioned, said means being inaccessible when said upper case is positioned; and locking means within the lower enclosing means to lock the upper enclosingfmeans to the base u plate.
7. In a printing press the combination of: a printing member; type secured thereto; a guard box Y surrounding the said printing memberV and said type; a type shield rockably mounted on and within said guard box; means to move said guard box and said printingvmember coordinately to effect a printing operation; means relating said printing member to said type shield to cause said type shield to rock out of shielding position relative to said printing member when said printing member is moved relative to said guard box to effect a printing impression; means to returnsaid type shield to a shielding position relative to said type'wh'en said printing member is returned to its normal position relative to said guardbox; and inking means associated with said type shield and operated by movement thereof to ink said type between said impressions. 8. A combinationas in claim 7 in which said inking means is mounted on said type shield. f' Y 9. A combination as in claim 7 in which said inkingmeans applies ink to said type on said return movement of said printing member to normal position relative to said guard box.
10. A combination as in claim 7 in which said inking means comprises a pad mountedk on said type shield and brought into inking relation with said type when said printing member returns to its normal position relative to said guard box. I
11. A combination as in claim 7 in which said inking means comprises a pad mounted on said type shield and brought into inking relation with said type when said printing member returns to its normal position relative to said guard box; a roller on said printing member adapted to Contact said pad during the movement of said printing member to accomplish a printing impression; and yieldable means operating between said printing member and said type shield to maintain said roller in contactA with said pad while said pad is out of contact with said type.
12. In a .printing press the combination of: a printing member; type secured thereto; a
guard box surrounding the said printing 'lio member and said type; a type shield movably mounted on and within said guard box; means to move said guard box and said printing member coordinately to effect a printing operation meansrelating said printing member to said type shield to cause said type shield to move out of shielding position relative to said printing member when said printing member is moved relative to said guard box tofeiect a printing impression; means to return said type shield to a shielding position relative to said type When saidprinting member is returned to its normal position relative to said guard boX; and inking means associated With said type shield and operV ated by movement thereof to Aink said type between said impressions.
13. A Combination as in claim 12 in which said inking means is mounted on said type shield.
14. A combination as in Claim 12 in Which said inking means comprises a pad mounted on said type shield and brought into pressurable engagement With said type during the movement of said printing member relative to said guard box between successive printing impressions.
