Objects of the invention are to provide imroved window screen construction comprismg a section of screen material having a transverse frame member attached to each end thereof and designed and adapted to engage with supports in order to support the section of screen material stretched vertically to without the use of the usual substantially inflexible side frame members in permanent connection with the vertical side edges of the screen; to provide improved means forv engaging the ends of said end frame members to support the screen stretched vertically; to provide vertical retainers in which the side edges of the screen are engaged and along which they are slidable longitudinally,
with means cooperating with the retainers to m hold the screen stretched transversely.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved screen construction an support therefor including transverse frame members attached to the upper and lower ends of a screen and flexible resilient elements attached to the screen near the side edges thereof for engaging in retainers in which the screen is mounted and along which 8@ the screen is movable vertically.

The screen is shown mounted in a casement window having a frame, including vertical side frame members 1 a head 2 and a sill 3. The two retainers for the side edges of the screen each comprises a section of sheet metal bent to provide a portion 7 of double thickness and a rectangular retainer guide 8. The doubled portions 7 seat against the inner surfaces of the stops 6 and are detachably' secured thereto by fasteners 9. The side edges 10 and 11 of the plates forming the retainer guides are spaced apart to provide opposite parallel slots 12. The lower ends of the edges 10 and the connected wall of the rovide notches 13. The upper ends of the e ges 10 and the connected portions of the wall of the tube 8 are cut away to provide notches 14. A portion of the wall of each tube is rolled outwardly to provide a rounded support 15.
The screen mounted in these retainer guides comprises a section 16 of screen material having a transverse sheet metal frame member attached to its upper end and a similar transverse sheet metal frame member attached to its lower end. The frame memher at the upper end includes a section of sheet metal folded to form an inner wall 17, an outer wall 18 spaced apart, as will be understood by reference to Fig. 4 of the drawing, edge portions 19 of said walls 17 and 18 clamped closely upon the upper end of the screen lfiwhich extends between said edges 19, and end portions 20 of the walls 17 and 18 pressed closely against each other and designed and arranged to extend into the slots 12. The slots 12 are wide enough to as receive the ends 20 of the upper frame memher and also to receive the edges 19 of said frame member clamped upon the upper end of the screen. The wall 18 is formed with slots 21 through which the fingers of the no hands may be inserted to manipulate the screen frame.
The transverse frame member at the lower end of the screen is of similar construction, including a section of sheet metal bent and shaped to form an intermediate portion 22, like the intermediate portion composed of the spaced walls 17 and 18, edges 23 clamped closely upon the lower edge of the screen, and compressed ends 24, similar to the compressed ends 20, and designed and arranged to extend into the slots 12 in the same manner that the ends are capable of extending into said slots 12. The outer wall of this frame member is rovided with slots 25 through which the ngers of the hands may be extended in order to engage the lower end of the screen frame to manipulate the same.
The vertical edges of the screen section 16 extend through the slots 12 and into the tubes 8. Sections of resilient wire are rolled to provide resilient wire frame members 26 and these-resilient wire frame members 26 constitute screw members that may be screwed into the marginal portions of the screen in a manner that will be understood by reference to Fig. 5 of the drawing. These resilient frame members 26'are within the tubes 8 and engage against the marginal portions 10 and 11 adjacent to the slots 12. These members 26 are incapable of passing through the slots 12 and, therefore, hold the screen section 16 stretched transversely.
The screen is designed and adapted to be mounted in its retainer supports in a manner that will be understood by reference to Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawing. As there shown. the members 26 are within the tubes 8 and hold the screen stretched transversely. The upper transverse frame member has its lower edge extending into the slots 12 while the upper portion of said frame member is deflected inwardly against the head 2 of the window frame, thus permitting the screen to be raised and slid along the retainer guides.
The section of screen material and the frame members 26 are resilient and flexible and will be bent over the supports 15, permitting the upper portion of the screen to extend down inwardly beyond the inner portion of the screen. In this way, the lower portion of the window is exposed to afford access to the window for any desired purpose.
The lower frame member may be raised slightly and its lower edge drawn inwardly through the notches 13 and the screen moved downwardly while the ends of the upper frame member slide downwardly along the slots 12 in order to expose and afford access to the upper portion of the window.
When mounted in position for permanent use, the screen occupies the position substantially shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, in which the lower edge of the lower frame member rests upon the sill 3, being retained therein and prevented from displacement by the lower portion of the tubes 8 below the notches 13. The resilient members 26 hold the screen stretched transversely and will bend and yield with the screen when the screen is extended outwardly at either end, but will not permit the screen to collapse or become detached from the tubular retainer guides excepting parts comprising the invention ma be varied within the scope of equivalent limits without departure from the nature and principle thereof. I do not restrict myself unessentlally, but what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A window screen comprising a pair of vertical tubular guides having slots through their adjacent edges and each having a notch at its upper end and a notch near its lower end, a section of screen material having its marginal portions extending through said slots into said guides, longitudinally movable frame members mounted in said guides and engaging the marginal portions of said screen section, and transverse frame members attached to the upper and lower ends of said screen section, the transverse frame member at the upper end of said screen section extending permanently through said notches at the upper ends of said guides.
2. A window screen comprising a pair of vertical tubular guides having slots through adjacent sides and having notches at their upper ends and near their lower ends, a section of screen material having its marginal portions extending through said slots into said guides, longitudinally movable frame members engaging the marginal portions of said screen section in said guides, a transverse frame member attached to the upper end of said screen section and extending obliquely through said notches at the upper ends of said guides, and a transverse frame member attached to the lower end of said screen section and extending below said notches near the lower ends of said guides and being movable upwardly along said guides.
3. A window screen comprising a pair of vertical tubular guides having slots through adjacent sides and having notches at their upper ends and near their lower ends, a section of screen material having its marginal portions extending through said slots-into said guides, longitudinally movable frame members engaging the marginal portions of said screen section in said guides, a transverse frame member attached to the upper end of said screen section and extending 0bliquely through said notches at the upper ends of said guides, a transverse frame member attached to the lower end of said screen section and extending below said notches near the lower ends of said guides and being movable upwardly along said guides and also being movable outwardly throu h said notches near the lower ends of said guides, and means forming manually engageable portions in connection with said lower transverse frame member.
4. A window screen comprising a pair of vertical tubular guides having slots in their adjacent sides and having notches at their upper ends, outwardly rounded supports at the lower ends of said notches, a screen section having its marginal portions extending through said slots into said guides, longitudinal frame members mounted in said guides and engaging the marginal portions of said screen section, a transverse frame member attached to the upper end of said screen section and extending in an inclined position in said notches, a transverse frame member attached to the lower end of said screen section and engaging said guides, and manually engageable portions in connection with said last named frame member.
