This invention relates to door locks, and
is particularly directed to the type of lock having a horizontal bolt and a pair of vertical bolts adapted to be moved in opposite directions simultaneously with movement of the horizontal bolt, and wherein the vertical bolts are adapt-ed to project beyond the door edge for overlapping the door jamb; and it is an object of the invention to provide a highly improved lock of the character described having novel means for projecting said bolts and for rotating the vertical bolts to bring said vertical bolts entirely within the outer edge of the door so that no parts will project beyond the door edge.
A further object of this invention is to provide a compact, strong and rugged lock of the character described. which shall comprise comparatively few and Vsimple parts, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, smooth and positive in operation, easy to assemble and disassemble, and yet practical and efficient to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists `in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will beindicatedin the following claims. Y

Referring now in detail to the drawings, 1() designates aV lock embodying the invention,'and 11a designates a. keeper therefor. The lock is preferably mounted on a door 12 adjacent the vertical edge 13 thereof, and the keeper 11dl is mounted on the door jamb 14. Said lock 1() comprises a casing 11 having a front wall 15, top and bottom walls 16 and 17, an end wall 18 remote from the door edge 13, and an end wall 19 adjacent said door edge. The upper and lower walls 16 and 17 may be formed with aligned slots 20 and 21 respectively, adjacent the end wall 19. A rearcover plate 22 `attached to the rear open side ofthe casing, in any suitable manner, serves to close the slots 20, 21 to form tubular, preferably square shaped openings or passages, for the purpose hereinafter described.
Slidably mounted within the casing 11, is a horizontal bolt 23, said bolt preferably havingan extension 24 projecting toward the end wall 18 and slidably mounted between a pair of fixed guides 25 and 26 integrally formed with said casing. The horizontal bolt 23 is adapted to be projected from said casing` through an opening 27 formed in said end wall 19. Fixed to said horizontal bolt and projectingrearwardly therefrom is a pin 30,`for the purpose described below.
heans is provided for reciprocating said horizontal bolt 23. To this end, the front wall 15 is formed with a bore 15a, and rotatably mounted therein isa hand knob 31 projecting into said casing: Attached to said hand knob, 3
and disposed within the casing, is an arm 32 to the outerend'of which isffixed a pin 33. Pivotally interconnecting said pin 33 and the pin 30 is a link 34, said link being formed with a rearwardly extending, substantially semi-cylindrical projection 36. Mounted on the cover plate 22 is suitable key actuated mechanism 38 extending to the interior of the casing and having an arm 39 fixed thereto and adapted to li'e against the interior surface of said cover plate. Extending from said arm 39 is a pin 40 adapted to project into the opening formed in said projection 36. Thus, the link 34 may be' moved by turning the knob 31 or actuating the mechanism 38. Movement of the link 34 obviously will cause movement of the horizontal bolt to which it is connected. A coil spring 41 having a coil portion mounted on said pin 30 may be provided with one end 41^- contacting projection 36 at the outer end of the link 34, and another end 42 contacting a portion of the horizontal bolt. Said spring serves to move the horizontal bolt to the extreme end of the projecting or retracting strokes thereof in the manner well known in the art.
Mounted within the tubular openings 2O and 21 of said casing 11 are a pair of similar symmetrically.disposed vertical bolts 45. Each of said bolts comprises a portion 46 slidably mounted in one of said openings and a U-shaped portion 47 rotatably mounted on said port-ion 46. The openings 20 and 21 are preferably of substantially square cross-section, and the portions 46 are likewise squareshaped, and each portion 46 is provided at the inner end thereof with a thinned portion 46, to which there is attached a transverse pin 48. Said portions 46 are further each provided with a longitudinal cut-away portion 49 on the side thereof adjacent the front wall 15. Each of the portions 46v is provided with an opening 5.0 adjacent the outer end thereof, receiving arpin 52, and with a central longitudinal bore 53 into which t-he pin 52 projects.
For rotatably mounting each of said portions 47 on said portions 46, the former `is provided with a cylindrical portion54 disposed within said borel 53, and formed with a transverse semi-annular slot 55 into which the inner end of said lpin 52 projects. lith this construction, the portion 47 maybe rotated only 180o about the portion 46. 1 and'4 illustrate the extreme positions of said portion 47 the pin being adapted to strike the end of the slot 55 in said positions of portion 47. Due to the pin and 4slot connection furthermore, longitudinal movement of the portion 47 with respect to portion 46 is prevented. The portion 56 of said portion 47, adjacent the portion 54 thereof, may be square-shaped so that when said portion 56 registers with the square-shaped openings 29 or 21, the bolts 45 may be slidably moved with respect to the casing.
For slidably moving said bolts 45, there is provided a pair of actuating members or plates 60, similar in construction and symmetrically disposed with respect to the horizontal mid-section of the casing. The plates 60 are adapted to operatively interconnect the horizontal bolt 23 with the vertical bolts 45 for causing simultaneous movement of said bolts. To this end` said actuating plates 60 lie against the inner surface of the cover plate 22 and each is Vpivoted to said cover plate by means of a pin 65 fixed to said cover plate and projecting toward the front wall 15 of the casing and extending into an openingr66 formed in said plate 60. Each of said plates 60 is furthermore formed with a slot 67 having, when the parts are in the unlocked position shown in Fig. 1, a portion 68 parallel to the direction of movement of the horizontal bolt, and perpendicular to the end wall 19 of the casing, and an inclined portion 69 eX- tending from said portion 68 away from the horizontal mid-section of the casing and toward said end wall 19, and serving as a cam for said pin 70. Fixed to the horizontal bolt 23 and extending rearwardly therefrom toward said cover plate 22 are a pair of symmetrically disposed pins 70, each projecting into one of said slots 67. Each of said plates 69 is furthermore formed at the end thereof adjacent the end wall 19, with a slot 72 pivotally and slidably receiving the pin 48 of one of said bolt portions 46, and hence forming a cammed connection therewith.
It will now be understood that as the horizontal bolt is projected from the position shown in F ig. 1 toward the position shown in F ig 4, the plates 60 will be unaffected until the pins 7.0, which slide in the portion 68 of the slots 67, reach the inclined portions 69 of said slots. Continued movement of the horizontal bolt toward projecting position will rotate said plates 60 inwardly about the pins 65 toward each other, for causing sliding movement of the bolts 45 inwardly toward each other.
Means is further provided for rotating the bolt portions 47 from the v)ositions shown in Fig. 1, through an angle of 180o into overlapping relation with respect to the door jamb during` the first portion of the projecting movement of the horizontal bolt, and before the sliding movement of said vertical bolt begins. To this end, the horizontal bolt 23 is provided with horizontal rack portions 7 5 at the upper and lower ends thereof, the teeth of said rack portions facing toward the rear cover plate 22. Formed on the inner ends of portions 54 of said members 47 are small pinions 76 having teeth adapted to mesh with the teeth of said racks 7 5. With the bolts unlocked and in the position shown in Fig. 1, the gears 7 6 mesh with the rack 75. Upon projecting the horizontal bolt 23 therefore, members 47 will be rotated-180o, rotation through said angle being limited by coaction of the pin 52 within the slot 55. l/Vhen the members 47 have been rotated 180, the pins 70 will pass into the inclined portion 69 of the slot 67 to cause inward rotation of the plates 60 for drawing the vertical bolts inwardly toward each other. rlhis movement will causeunmeshin'g of the pinions 76 from the racks 75 to permit the horizontal boltto be further projected without rotating the vertical bolts. Upon retracting the horizontal bolt, the vertical bolts will first be moved away from each other until the LGI.-

lt will thus be seen that a single movement of eitherthe knob 31 on one side of the lock, or the key actuating mechanism from the other side ot the lock, in one direction will cause rotation of the vertical bolts into overlapping relation with respect to the door j amb, and movement of all of said bolts into engagement with the keeper lla. of the knob 31 and the key actuating mechanism in the opposite direction will causefdisengagement of the bolts `from the keeper and rotation of the vertical bolts inwardlyof the outer edgel of the door so as-to preventinjury to persons standing near the. door.
The keeper lla may beprovided' with Va wall 8O parallel to the edge of the ,door jamb 14, and provided with lan opening 81 for receiving the horizontalfbolt. The keeper 11a is further` provided with parallel end walls 82 formed with openings 83 for receiving-the ends 84 of the U-shaped bolts45. Said end walls 82 may be provided with cut out portions 86 at the ends thereof adjacent the wall 8l to provide clearance, to permit the vertical bolts to be completely closed even when the keeper is somewhat out ot alignment with the lock. For this purpose also, the opening 8l may be slightly oversized.
Although the bolts 45 are shown to be U-shaped, the same may be replaced by bolts wherein the portions 84 which engage the keeper project outwardly away from each other. "With such bolts, the plate will be interchanged so that the portions 69 of the slot 67 will proj ect inwardly toward the horizontal mid-section of the casing and toward the end wall 19 instead of away from the horizontal mid-section of the casing. lV ith such construction7 projection of the horizontal bolt will cause rota-tion of the plates 60 away from each other to move the vertical bolts outwardly away from each other, and the keeper may then be provided with suitably located apertured end walls for receiving the outer ends of the vertical bolts.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the sev-eral objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practica-l use. j
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shownV in the Actuation j accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: f

In a lock, a bolt, means for reciprocating said bolt, a second bolt having a portion mounted for sliding movement only, in a direction transverse to the movement of said first bolt and a second portion rotatably and non-slidably mounted on said first portion, and means associated with vsaid bolts for Pcausing simultaneous sliding movement of said first bolt and said iirstv portion of said second bolt, and means associated with said bolts for causing rotary movement of said second portion of said second bolt, simultaneously with the sliding movement' of said first bolt, said last means comprising a rack and pinion connection between said iirst bolt and second portion of said second bolt.

A lock comprising a bolt, means for reciprocating said bolt, a second bolt having a portion mounted for sliding movement in a direction transverse to the movement of said first bolt and a second portion rotatably7 mounted on said first portion, means for limiting'the rotary movement between said portions andmean's for causing simultaneous slidingv movement between said bolts.
8. A lock comprising a casing, a bolt, means for projecting said bolt from said casing, a second bolt, and means for moving said second bolt in a direction transverse to the movement of said first bolt, said means comprising a member pivoted adjacent one end thereof to said casing, and having a cammed connection at the other end thereof to said second bolt and provided with a slot intermediate the ends thereof, said lirst bolt having a pin projecting into said slot, said slot, in one position of `said pivoted member, having a portion parallel to the direction of movement of said first bolt and a portion inclined to said first portion.

In a lock, in combination with ahorizontal bolt, a pair` of symmetrical, oppositely disposed, vertical bolts, and means for causing sliding movement of said vertical bolts in opposite directions, and rotary movement of said vertical bolts during movement of the horizontal bolt in one direction, said means including a pair of symmetrical plates pivoted to said casing and having pin and slot connections with said bolts.

In a lock, in combination with a horizontal bolt, a pair of symmetrical, oppositely disposed, vertical bolts, and means lfor causing movement of said vertical bolts in opposite directions during one part of the movement of the horizontal bolt in one direction and rotary movement of said vertical bolts during another part of said movement of Vsaid horizontal bolt in said directions, said means comprising a pair of symmetrically disposed plates each pivoted at one end thereof and having a cam connection with said horizontal bolt and one of said vertical bolts, and a yrack and pinion connection between aid horizontal bolt and each of said vertical olts.
l1. In a lock, a casing, a horizontal bolt mounted for reciprocation in said casing, a
vertical bolt, and a member pivoted to said casing having a pin and slot connection with said bolts, one or" said bolts having a rack, and the other a'pinion adapted to mesh with said rack.

A lock comprising a casing, a bolt, means for projecting said bolt from said casing, a second bolt and means for moving said second bolt in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of said iirst bolt, said means comprising a member pivoted within said casing and having a cammed connection to said second bolt and provided with a cammed part coacting with said first bolt, said cammed part, in one position of said pivoted member, having a portion parallel to the direction of movement of said lirst bolt, and a portion inclined to said first portion.
13. In a lock, a casing, a horizontal bolt mounted for reciprocation in said casing, a vertical bolt, a member pivoted within said casing about an aXis perpendicular to said horizontal bolt, said member having cammed connections to said horizontal and vertical bolts for causing simultaneous sliding movement of said bolts, andinterengaging means on said bolts for causing rotary movement of one of said bolts upon reciprocating said other bolt.
