,GROCE'RS' SCOOPS. No. 186,888. Patented J'an.30,1877."'
SCOOP was WOI'll out.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I WILLIAM T. SHERER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN GROCERS SCOOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1863888, dated January 30, 1877; application filed December 26, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. T. SHERER, of Ohicago, in the county of Cook and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grocers bcoops; and do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved scoop, and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. I
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
Grocers scoops have heretofore been constructed of or from sheet iron or brass, which, by means ofsuitabledrawing-dies, was pressed or drawn into the necessaryshape; but articles thus constructed have been rendered heavy and clumsy by the weight of metal necessary to insure the necessary strength, and from the relatively soft character of the material employed, but little use was required before the To obviate these difficulties is the design of my invention, which consists, as a new article of manufacture, in
. a grocers scoop in which the blade is constructed of or from sheet steel, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents the base of my scoop, which is constructed, preferably, from sheet-iron, in the form shown, by
means of drawing or pressing dies. Secured to or upon the edge of the base A by rivets or other suitable means, is a blade, B, which has the usual shape, and is constructed of or from sheet-steel, its cylindrical rear end being formed by uniting the edges of the sheet of steel, so as to form a seam that is in a line with its axis. A cast-metal socket, G, is now riveted upon the rear-end of the base A, and the scoop is then coated with tin, after which a wooden handle, D, is fitted into and secured within said socket, and the device thus completed for use. The rigidity of the metal composing the blade renders practicable the employment ofa very thin sheet, by which means the weight of the scoop is comparatively small, while the hardness of said blade prevents wear, and renders said scoop very durable.
Having thus fully setforth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim is As a new article of manufacture, a grocers scoop, in which the blade is constructed of or from sheet-steel, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of December, 1876. a
' WILLIAM T. SHERER.
