Description
July 19, 1932. YURKOVlTCH 1,868,342
HINGE LOCK Filed Feb. 18, 1931 Patented July 19, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ANTON YURKOV'ITCH, F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA HINGE LOCK This invention relates to a hinge adapted for use with any suitable article such as a door, window or the like and morepartlcularly to a hinge which can be locked in one or more positions intermediate that of a fully closed or a fully opened position.
Known hinges of this type while mechan1- cally satisfactory, are inconvenient and undesirable in that they require considerable 110 manual effort to adjust the article to whlch they are applied.
I have, therefore, invented a hinge construction which will obviate the above noted defectsand which will present additional advantages peculiar to its own construction.
An object of the invention is to so construct or modify a hinge that it may be eas ly and simply locked in one or more positions 1ntermediate a fully closed or a fully opened position.
Another object is to provide a hinge or so modify a known hinge that one or more slots are provided which extend across the joint of adjacent hinge barrels so that a locking member may be applied thereto.
A further object isto provide a hinge with a special slot so that a looking or hand piece may be applied thereto to fix the hinge portions in predetermined angular relationship.
Qther and further objects and advantages will be understood from the following description or will be appreciated by those skilled in this art.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 shows an elevational view of a hinge embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective rear view of the looking or hand piece which may be utilized in connection with the invention of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a bottom View of Fig. 2;
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary View similar to Fig. 1 of a modified form of the invention;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail of the slot arrangement of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a View similar to Fig. 2 of a modified form of looking or hand piece used with the modification of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 7 is an enlarged section taken substantially along line VII-VII of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring first to the modification shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, I have represented a convenient form of the invention. In these figures, 10 and 11 represent the ordinary leaves of a hinge having the usual apertures 12 for the purpose of fastening the hinge leaves by means of screws or the like (not shown) to the desired article or structural elements. In the usual manner also, the hinge leaves are provided with the registering hollow barrels 18, the hinge leaf 11 having three such spaced barrels for the reception therebetween of the two spaced barrels of the hinge leaf 10. As is known in hinge construction, the barrels are registered and a pintle member inserted therethrough, said pintle having any desired enlarged head construction 14, there being, if so desired and as is usual a similar construction at the bottom. Each of these enlarged heads 1 1 has an aperture 15 passing therethrough for the reception of a ring or other suitable member 16 to which may be connected a cord, chain or the like 17, as will be understood.
In carrying out my invention, I may, for example, cut a slot in adjoining barrels so that when the slots register the composite slot extends across the abutting surfaces of such barrels. This slot is preferably longer and, if desired, wider as at 18 above the joint or abutting surfaces than below the same as at 19, so that the locking member may be more readily inserted as will be appreciated. At the end of the cord or chain member 17 above mentioned, is connected the locking or hand piece 20 which conveniently may be provided with a transverse hole 21 for the reception of a ring or other member 22, said cord or chain being connected to said ring, as shown in Fig. 1. The exact appearance or contours of the hand or locking piece are relatively unimportantwith the exception that such piece is provided on its rear otherwise flat surface with a projection, which, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 consists of an upper plane portion 23 and a lower dovetailed portion 24. Each of these portions extends approximately half the distance of'the whole projection and the projection as a whole extends approximately about one-half the length of the rear face of the locking piece 20. The portions 23 and 24 are so dimensioned as to cooperate readily with and form a complementto the composite slot above mentioned with its portions 18 and 19 already described. The bottom. portion 19 of said slot has dovetailed walls complementary to said projection portion 24.
It is thus apparent that in order to lock the hinge leaves in predetermined position they are moved relatively to each other until the nearest upper and lower slot portions register vertically, that is, become vertically aligned, whereupon the hand piece is placed sothat the projection extends into the upper portion 18 of the slot whereupon it is moved downwardly as far as it will go, thus locking all the members in the position indicated, simply and firmly, yet effectively.
In the modification shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the upper portion of the slot is formed T-shaped as at 25 and the material of the hinge barrel behind the portions between the lower edge of the cross bar of the T and the bottom of that hinge barrel is cut away or thinned as at 25'. This enables the arcu ate extension 26 on plane projection 27 of locking piece 20 to be inserted in the T and then slid downwardly as will be understood to the upper edge of the subjacent hinge barrel where it, of course, stops. The arcuate extension follows concentrically the curve of the hinge barrel and pintle so as to permit effective action without any binding of the parts. Otherwise the construction is the same and the operation and use are likewise the same, except that as to the lower part 28 of the slot the walls are plane.
While they do not all show in the drawing there are a plurality of such registrable slot portions at various angles around the circumference of the barrels so that the hinge leaves may be locked in any desired or required angular relationship. Some hinges work substantially around 360 of a circle and my invention is particularly applicable to such hinges.
I am not limited to the type of hinge to which my invention can be applied nor am I limited to the usage to which the invention is put as any hinged members are suitable for use of the invention where it may be desired to fix or stop the members in required or predetermined angular position. It is clear that the chain 17 may be connected to either head 14 and that when connected to the upper the chain may hang down behind and be brought up from underneath when the locking piece is positioned.
It is clear that abutting hinge barrels may be provided in accordance with the present invention with one or more notches which,
when aligned, are adapted to form a slot in i clear that regardless of whether adjacent hinge barrels have one or more notches that a slot is nevertheless provided at the desired location.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

In a device of the character described, two superposed relatively movable abutting hinge barrels having notches alignable to form a slot extending across the meeting surfaces thereof, and a member insertable into said slot for locking said hinge barrels in predetermined angular relation, said member including a hand piece with a projection thereon for reception in said slot.
