Description

Patented July 19, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT Fries JESSE I. THORN, 0F BAYONNE, NEVI JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE BABGOGK & VTTLCOX COMPANY, OF BAYONNE, NEW JERSEY, A CORPCRATION OF NEW JERSEY ncoivolvuznn Application filed September 15, 1927, Serial No. 213,662. r
This invention relates to an economizer having U-tubes in which some of the U-tubes are so shaped and arranged that soot blowers can be conveniently inserted into the economizer. The invention will be understood from the description in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a vertical section through an illustrative embodiment of the invention taken along the line 11 of Fig. 3; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken along the line 22 of Fig. 1 or Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken along the line 33 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, reference characters 5, 6, 7 and 8 indicate the walls of an econoinizer that are preferably arranged so that the hot gases pass downwardly and the water to be heated passes upwardly in counterflow direction with respect to the hot gases. A series of superposed headers 9 is located within the economizer near the wall 6, and feed water enters the lowermost header through an inlet provided therefor and the heated water passes out through a plurality of outlets from the uppermost header of the series. The headers are connected by rows ofU-tubes 10, one leg of which enters a lower header and the other leg the upper header adjacent thereto. The return bends 10 of the U-tubes are at an acute angle to the edges of the headers 9 and the upper leg of one U-tube is approximately in line with the lower leg of the ad jacent U-tube. At one or more selected places along the headers 9, holes into which tubes would be expanded, are omitted and special U-tubes 11 are provided with longer return bends 11' or with their legs farther apart so as to extend from a hole on one side of the space to a hole on the other side thereof, thereby providing a space through which soot blowers can pass between the legs of the U- tubes 11. It will be noted that by this arrangement the upper legs and the lower legs, respectively, or a row of U-tubes are enabled to be kept in single rows without any change in the headers except omitting corresponding holes, and that the angle which the longer return bends of the tubes 11 make with the edges of the headers 9 is less than that made by the return bends 10 of the other tubes 'with respect to the cross sectional area of the soot blower tubes themselves, that proper and 10. The above described places from ch the holes are omitted from the headers will the eoonomizer.
Soot blowers 12 that are provided with perforations or nozzles 13 are inserted into the space or spaces provided by the special tubes 11 and different soot blowers may extend dif- 2.
ferent distances into the economizer.
The
"ones extending to greater distances have the perforations or nozzles terminating near the end of the shorter soot blowers, so that'the total cross sectional area of the nozzles is such,
eflicient velocities of the fluid escaping from the nozzles can besecured for cleaningthe U-tubesq This can be done for example by making the total area of the perforations in a soot blower approximately equal to the crosssectional area of the tube itself.
In order to prevent the 'hot gases from short circuiting through the spaces provided for the soot blowers, bafiles or plates 14 are provided extending across these spaces and 'restingup'on adjacent legs of tubes. The
edgesof the bafilesmay be curved for this purpose as shown at115, Fig. 1. Changes and 1 modifications can be madein details without departing from thespirit or scope of the. invention. V
I claim:

3. In an economizer, a plurality of sub stantially straight headers, and U-tubes connecting said headers, some of said U-tubes having longer bends than others, said bends being aligned, said bends being inclined with respect tothe length of the economizer, some of said bends being inclined with respect to the others.
4. In an economizer, a plurality of substantially straight headers, and U-tubes conneeting said headers having return bends disposed at an acute angle to the edges of said headers, said bends being inclined with respect to the length of the economizer, some of said bends being inclined with respect to the others. a
5. In an economizer, a plurality of headers,
U-tubes connecting said headers, some of said U-tubes having longer bends than others, and
baflles in proximity to tubes having the longer bends.
6. An economizer having rows of aligned U-tubes extending thereacross with corresponding tubes in each row having longer return bends than the others, said bends being inclined with respect to the length of the economizer, the legs of said tubes having longer bends being aligned with legs of other of said U -tubes.
7 An economizer having rows of U-tubes extending thereacross with a corresponding tube in each row having a longer return bend than the others to provide space for soot blowers, and bailies across said space.
8. An economizer having rows of aligned U-tubes extending thereacross with corresponding tubes in each row having longer return bends than the others, the tubes with longer bends being turned at a greater angle than the others, said bends being inclined with respect to the length of the economizer.
9. An economizer shaving rows of U-tubes extending thereacross with corresponding tubes in each row having longer return bends than the others, the corresponding legs of all the tubes in each row being aligned, said bends being inclined with respect to the length of the economizer, the legs of said tubes having longer bends being aligned with legs of other of said U-tubes. v
