BARBERS CHAIR Filed July 8. 1929 Patented July 19, 1932 Enigmista ARTHUR R. SCHVAR-ZKOPE, OF GHICAGO, ILLENOES, ASSGNOR- T THEO. A. KOCHS ICOM- 'I PANY,y or CHICAGO, I'Lmuors,
A CORPORATION 0F LLLNS' '.BARBERS CHAIR Application filed July 8,
is to provide'novel means for guiding the' head rest slide and holding it in its various positions of adjustment. Another object is to provide novel means for fastening the slide guiding means tothe framework of the chair back. Another object is to provide simple and efficient means for securing together the woodeny framework of thechair back and the marginal metal frame member thereof.
With these and other objects and advantages in view, this invention consists inthe several novel features of construction, arrangement and combinationsof parts hereinafter fully set forth'and claimed.
The invention is clearly illustrated in tht` 2o drawing accompanying this specification in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a fragment of a chair back embodying a simple vform of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a detail central vertical cross section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1';
Fig. 3 is a detail `vertical longitudinal section taken on theV line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. l1 is -a detail horizontal section taken f v on the line 4`l of Fig. 3;
Fig. `5 is a side elevation of a -fragment of the marginal frame member looking in the direction of the arrow 5 in Fig. 2; and
Fig.' 6 is al perspective view of a collarv employed for securing the upper Vend of the marginal frame member kto the wooden framework of the chair back.
' Referring to said drawing; the reference characters, 6, 6?, 7 and P@designate horizontal 60 and vertical-frame members which comprise the framework: of the chair back. rhese members are preferably formed of wood;
glued and .otherwise rigidly secured together.
. as b y dowel pins to form a strong and substantial framework.
A marginal framefmember 8, preferably formedV of enameled metal ware surrounds the framework of the back, and its lower end is secured thereto in any suitable manner, as,
5 for instance, by nscrewsiIL which enter the 1929. Serial No. 376,684.
wooden framework from below. A metallic sheet, or other suitable sheet of material', 9 is rigidly held between the .framework and marginal frame member 8. The marginal frame member 8 preferably comprises a struct5 ture, angle shaped in cross section, .having a flange 10 which overlies the back sheet 9 and a flange 11 which over-lies the edge portion of the framework. i
A slide or slide bar 12 for the" head rest (not shown) is provided, as usu'al,and said slide enters a vertical groove 7*?. formed in the members.7 6, @aand Z of the wooden framework through a slotor opening 13 in they upper horizontal flange 11 of :the marginal frame member 8. A guide member. lill is providedfor guiding the slide 12 in the chair back, andsaid' guide member is formed `with a vertical guideway or channel 15 (see Figs. 8 and 4) in which the slide is slidably guided. Theguide member 14 is contained in the vertical groove 7b; as seen in Figs.A 8 and 4, and is rigidly secured to the 'framework screws 16 which pass. through the wooden A framework and are threaded. inV plates or bars 17 which act as nuts andare secured to the` opposite side of the wooden'framework by screws 17a. rlhe bars or plates 17d have tapped holes 'for the reception of theV screws 16', and being rigidly fastened to the wooden 8G framework., they will not drop into the upholstery when the screws 16 are unscrewed therefrom, as would be Athe case were ordiy nary nuts employed on the ends of the screws. Should occasion require the removal of the guide member 1 4-, this may be conveniently done without any danger of the nuts becoming displaced. ln order to obtain access to the headslo'f the screws,the wallrlflfL of the r guide member is formed with Vapertures 19 arranged in alignment with the a-Xes of the screws 16, as is clearly illustrated. in Figs. and 4. y Y A rectangular collar-:2O is employed for rigidly holding the upper end of the margi- 95 nal frame member 8 in place on the wooden framework. Saidcollarhas a rectangular opening QOtherethrough-for the passage of the slide 12 and it is formed withV downwardly projecting lianges 20bfwhich enter the opening 13 in the marginal frame member 8. It is also formed with a marginal top plate 2Oc that lies upon the upper face of the marginal frame member 8 and completely covers the opening 13 with the exception of the slot for the slide 12. The rectangular sleeve is provided with screw holes for the reception of screws 21 which are threadedly engaged in laterally extending ears 18c formed at the upper end of the guide member 14. Above the ears 18, the guide member 14 is formed with a neck portion 18d that enters a socket in the collar formed between the side flanges 20b thereof.
In assembling the marginal frame member 8 with the wooden framework, the neck portion 18d of the guide member 14 is inserted into the opening 13 of the marginal frame member and the lower end of the marginal frame member is then swung against the wooden framework and its lower end secured in place with the screws 8a. Thereafter, the flanges 20b of the collar 2O are inserted through the opening 13 in the marginal frame member, the neck portion 18d of the guide member 14 entering the socket in the collar 20, after which the screws 21 are inserted and screwed down, thereby rigidly connecting the collar with the guide member. It is to be observed that a rigid connection is obtained between the wooden framework and the marginal frame member 8 which takes all of the strain off the screws 21, inasmuch as the neck portion 18d of the guide member 14 fits fairly tight in the socket of the collar 20, and the flanges of the collar fit fairly tight in the slot or opening 13 of the marginal frame member 8.
The slide 12 is formed with teeth 22 on one side, which teeth co-operate with a latch in the form of a dog or pawl 23, whereby the slide may be held in any vertical position of adjustment. The dog 23 is pivotally connected to the guide member 14 by a pin 24 which is secured in ears 25 formed on the wall 18a of the guide member. The upper end of the dog pass-es through a slot in the wall 18a of the guide member and is yieldingly held in engagement with a tooth of the slide by a spring 26 interposed between the wall 18 and an armV 27'v of the dog. Y
Itwill be observed that by depressing said arm 27 of the dog, the latter will be disengaged from the slide 12 whereupon the same may be lowered to any position of adjustment, and when the dog is released, it will engage with the adjacent tooth and support the slide in such adjusted position. The teeth of the slide are preferably in the form of ratchet teeth, as shown, whereby the slide may be withdrawn by merely pulling the same out of the chair back.
A push button 28l is provided for actuating the pawl or dog 23., and sai'dpush button is held in an apertureV contained in a depending lug 29 which is formed upon the marginal frame member 8. The push button is located behind the arm 27 of the dog 23 in position to engage the same when pressed inwardly, and a spiral spring 3() is provided Vfor returning the push button to its normal position. As
shown, the push button is slightly tapered i 29 from the rear thereof, after which they spiral spring may be inserted into the socket 31 through the upper open end thereof, the smaller convolution of the spring being placed over the smaller end of the push button. From this it will be observed that the spring actuated push button is separately mounted in the marginal frame kmember 8,
whereas the dog or pawl is mounted on the guide member 14. This arrangement enables the guidemember, together with the dog or pawl, to be assembled with theframework of the chair back, after which the sheet backing 9 and marginal 'frame member 8 with the push button 28 contained therein may be secured to the framework in assembling the parts. The framework may be upholstered in the usual manner, a fragment of which is seen at 32.
