Description

July 12, 1932. w F LD CONTAINER Filed Jan. 24, 1929 INVENTOR.
A TTORNE Y.
Patented July 12, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE I WALTER E. HUENEFELD, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIG-NOR TO THE HNENEFELD COM- PANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO CONTAINER Application filed January 24, 1929. serau No. 334,793.
My invention relates to containers, and particularly to a novel type of container having a self-locking closure.
It is the object of my invention to provide .5 a container with a lid which will carry looking device, which, when the lid is applied to the container, will interlock with an inturned bead formed at the top edge of the container. It is further my object to provide screw headed bolts for the locking de vices which will enable the receiver of the container to release the locking devices so that the lid may be removed.
As in all such packages for goods, it is an essential qualification that the container be inexpensive to make and also that it shall be of strong and rugged construction so that it will withstand shipping. It is my object to provide a container which will respond to such qualifications.
The above and other objects to which reference will be made in the ensuing disclosure I accomplish by that certain combination and arrangement of parts of which I have shown a preferred modification.
Referring to the drawings Figure l is a perspective view of the lid.
Figure 2 is a bottom perspective view of a portion of the lid showing the preferred type of locking device.
Figure 3 is a sectional view through a container showing the container with the lid locked in position thereon.
Figure 4 is a perspective View of a modi- 7 fied type of locking device.
The preferred type of container is circular in shape and is preferably made from metal,
although it may take other shapes, and the material is not a limitation. The container has a side peripheral wall 1 and a bottom 2, the sides being provided, if desired, with suitable reinforcing corrugations such as are indicated at 3. The top edge of the peripheral wall is formed with an inturned bead 4 which will ordinarily have an annular slot devices.
5 within which the locking devices seat. I
This bead serves for a shoulder and a shoulder can be formed in various ways. In wood a groove might be cut, or in paper a band might be expanded or riveted near the top. Also, the shoulders can be spaced.
The lid for the container shown is preferably of the friction type, having a downturned wall 6 which frictionally engages the outer surface of the container wall. At radially spaced positions in the lid there are depressed portions 7 which seat the lockin The locking devices are composed of metal clips having a straight shank 8 through which screw-threaded bolts 9 may be passed. The bolt may either be secured with a nut 10, as indicated in Figures 2 and 3, or the hole through the shank piece may itself be'threaded, as indicated at 11 in Fig ure 4. I The locking devices have return bent outer ends 12 which, when the lid is applied to the can, lock under the bead formed at the top edge of the container wall.
The locking devices are so spaced from the edge of the lid that when the lid is applied the return bent portion is resiliently contracted at the return bend of the device so that as the lid seats on the container the ends of the clips will snap into place thereby snugly locking the lid in place.
In removing the lid the receiver uses a screw-driver to'unscrew the bolts, and as soon as the bolts are turned clear off, the spring clips will remain within the can and the bolts maybe removed with the lid.
If fiber. containers or wooden tubs are used, the top edge of the walls will have to be pro- .vided with inturned beads or lugs to provide the shoulders with which the spring clips will interlock. In wooden tubs, for example,
annular ledges might be cut in the wall of the tub on the inner side just below the top, so that the spring clips maylock under the annular ledge.
I When the idea is once understood, modifiin said lid with threaded bolts, said bolts having slotted heads disposed exteriorly of said lid, and nuts for attachment interiorly of said lid.

niountably mounting said clip on said lid.
'2. A container having meansat'the inner surface of the side wall thereof to engage lid clips, a lid for the container having spring clips the ends of which will interlock with if said means when said lid is applied tosaid container, and means for demountably mounting said clips on said lid, said means being releasable from the outside of said lid.
3. Acontainer having an inturned annular bead at the upper edge thereof and a lid having radially spaced locking devices for engaging said inturned bead, said locking de vices being demountably secured in said lid. 7
4. A container having an inturned annular bead at the upper edge thereof and a lid having radially spaced locking devices for engaging said inturned bead, said locking devices being demountably secured in said lid and having screw-threaded bolts for securing said locking devices insaid lid.
5. A container having an inturned annular bead at the upper'edge thereof and a lid having radially spaced locking devices for engaging said inturned bead, said locking devices being demountably secured'in said lid, and being releasable exteriorly of said lid.
6. A container having an inturned annular bead at the upper edge thereof and a lid having radially-spaced locking devices for engaging said inturned bead, said locking de-' vices being demountably secured in said lid, and being releasable exteriorly of said lid, said locking devices having flat shanks, and return bent extensions of said shanks adapted to resiliently lock place under said inturned bead.
7 A container having'an annular inturned bead and a lid for said container having looking devices provided with resilient portions adapted to lock under said inturned bead with the frictional attachment of said lid to said container, said locking devices being secured in said lid withthreadedbolts, and
said bolts having slottedheads disposed ex- 7
