Pivotally mounted on the. center post and bearing directly upon the base plate 20 is a locking member 30, detailed in Fig. 11, having an upturned arc-shaped engaging lug 31 for engaging within the notch 17 of the shackle, as in Figs. 2 and 3. This locking member also has an upstanding latch pin 32 which in the raised position of the locking member, shown in Fig. 4, is engaged by a shoulder 33 of a latch member 34, detailed in Fig. 10, which constitutes a lever fulcrumed in the groove of grooved post 29. The latching of the locking member thus effected serves to hold the locking member in ts released position, Fig. 4, against the action of a coil spring 35 which tends to move it down wardly to the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Said coil spring 35 also serves to actuate the latch member 34 to urge it into its position for engaging the latch pin 32 by reason of the fact that it is mounted at one end on said latch pin and at the other end on an upwardly extending lug 36 on the lower end of the latch member 34. On the upper end of the latch member 34 is a bent up lug forming a cam 37 for engagement with the beveled nose 16 on the end of the shackle, whereby the return of the shackle from the released posltion thereof in Fig. 4 first causes the latch member 34 to swing against the action of spring 35 to release the latch pin 32 of the locking member, whereupon said locking member is urged by the spring 35 to its looking position which it assumes as soon as the notch 17 of the shackle is in position to receive the engaging lug 31. With only the parts so far described, a pull on the shackle serves to lift the locking member by turning it on center post 25 to raise the engaging lug thereof out of the path of the shackle notch where it becomes automatically latched by the engagement of the latch member 34 there with. It is held in this position during the turning of the shackle and until the shackle is again returned to its inner position where it becomes automatically engaged by the locking member as described.
A spacing plate 38, detailed in Fig. 8, is positioned on the posts 25, 26, 27, and 28, having openings 39 to receive them, and bears directly upon the locking member 30.
To prevent the swinging movement of the locking member that Will -release the notch of the shackle from the engaging lug 31, a locking dog 40, detailed in Fig. 7, is provided, which is pivotally mounted on post 27 and is urged toward the locking lug by a spring 41 bent around the post 26 with one end engaging the casing 22 and the other end engaging a shoulder 42 on said dog. In the locking position of the dog, as shown in Fig. 2, a shoulder 43 thereof stands directly in the path of the engaging lug 31 of the locking member and effectively prevents movement of it to be withdrawn.

A tumbler disk 44, detailed in Fig. 6, is loosely mounted on center post 25 and is free to turn thereon and serves to swin the locking dog so as to remove its shoulder 43 from the path of the engaging lug 31 of the locking member. This movement is effected by a cam projection 45 on the edge of the tumbler disk engaging the hook-like arm 46 of the locking dog, as shown in Fig. 3. The engagement of the cam 45 and arm 46 for displacing the dog is equally effective in either direction of turning movement of the tumbler disk and a slight flat surface on the peak of the cam enables the tumbler disk to hold the dog in the unlocking position of Fig. 3. The locking dog has another arm 47 at an angle to arm 46 and, in the position of the locking dog to which it is moved by the cam 1 45, as shown in Fig. 3, the arm 47 is about in engagement with the tumbler disk, and further movement of the locking dog against the pressure of its spring would be impossible but for the presence of a recess or notch 48 formed in the edge of the tumbler disk to receive it. One side of the notch forms a cam 49 against which the end of arm 47 bears when the locking dog is swung further against the pressure of its spring from the position to which it is moved by the cam 45. Such movement is effected when the shackle is withdrawn for although the shoulder 43 of locking dog 38 is withdrawn from the path of engaging lug 31 by the operation of the cam 45 of the tumbler disk, the shape of the upper portion of the locking dog is such that the engaging lug 31 cannot move far beyond the shoulder 43 without engaging a rounded cam edge 50, thus forcing the dog to swing against the pressure of its spring from the position of Fig. 3 to the position of Fig. 4. This further movement of the locking dog incident to the withdrawal of the shackle causes the arm 47 thereof to act on the cam 49 i of the tumbler disk to turn said tumbler disk out of its critical position, thereby automatically destroying the set combination by means of which the dog was initially moved to its unlocking position.
It will be understood, of course, that the lock may be provided with any number of similar locking dogs each provided with its spring 41 and its tumbler disk 44, and that motion may be communicated from a twirler 51 on a dial 52, not only to a tumbler disk 44' secured thereto on the back of the dial, but through engaging transfer lugs 53, as usual, to all of the tumbler disks in order that they may successfully be placed in their critical positions for unlocking their respective dogs, and only when all of the dogs are in unlocking position, the locking member is free to respond to the pull on the shackle and permit Also, it will be undero a at.

Between each locking dog and the next is a spacing plate 38, detailed in Fig. 9, like spacing plate 38 but having a central opening 39 of larger diameter to permit the play of the transfer lugs 53 therein.
A retaining ring 54, detailed in Fig. 13, fits on the reduced ends of the posts 26, 27, and 28, and the reduced end of the center post may fit Within the tubular stem of the tWirler, the dial 522 being let into and fixed in position in the casing and preferably having the edge of the casing turned over thereon.
Preferably each tumbler disk, in addition to the operating cam projection 45, has one or more false projections 55 to engage the hookshaped end of the locking dog to give additional clicks thereto in the turning of the tumbler and thus deceive anyone attempting to pick the lock.
The combination lock of this invention is not limited to padlocks, but is capable of general use Where any locking bolt may be substituted for the shackle. It is inexpensive to manufacture, but is strong and durable, and highly eiiicient, because of the feature of the automatic tumbler displacement. Should any attempt be made to force the locking dogs, the engagement of their arms 47 With the tumbler disks would prevent, unless all tumblers were in unlocking position.
The latch for the locking member facilitates the return of the shackle, as it serves to hold the locking member in its retracted position until the shackle is returned. .The
shackle on returning does not have to move the locking member, but merely releases the trigger formed by the latch member, and so unlatches the locking member permitting 7 its spring to pull it into locking engagement *ith the notch just before the shackle reaches the end of its return movement. This construction also permits of the use of the same spring for the latch member and the locking member.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A combination lock comprising a locking member, a dog for blocking the movement of the locking member from its locking position, a tumbler for moving the dog from its blocking position, and means dependent on the movement of the locking member from its locking position for moving the tumbler.
2. A combination lock comprising a locking member, a dog for blocking the movement of the locking member from itsllocki ng positioma tumbler for moving the dog out of its blocking posit-ion, means for causing a further movement of the dog incident to the movement of the locking member from itslocking position,and means utilizing said further movement of the dog to move the tumbler.
3. A combination lock comprising a looking member, a dog for blocking themovement of the locking member from its locking position, a tumbler for moving the dogout of its blocking position, a cam on the dog engaged by the locking member for causing a further movement of the dog incident to the move-- ment of the locking member from its locking pos tion, and means utilizing such further movement of the dog to move the tumbler.
l. A combination lock comprising a locking member, a dog for blocking the movement of the locking member from its locking position, a tumbler for moving the dog out of its blocking position, means for causing a further movement of the dog incident to the movement of the locking member from its locking position, and an arm on the dog engaging the tumbler and moving it during such further movement of the dog.
5. A combination lock comprising a looking member, a dog for blocking the movement of the locking member from its locking position, a tumbler forv moving the dog out of its blocking position, a cam on the dog engaged by the locking member for causing a further movement of the dog incident to. the movement of the locking member from its locking position, and an arm on the dog engaging the tumbler and moving itduring such further movement of the dog.
6. A combination lock comprising a locking member, a dog for blocking the movement of the locking member from its looking position, a rotatably mounted tumbler disk having a projection for engaging the dog to move it out of blocking position in one position of the disk, an arm on the dog for engaging the disk. and means for causing a further movement of the dog incident to the movement of the locking member from its locking position to cause the arm to move the disk.
'1' A combination lock comprising a locking member, a. dog for blocking the move ment of the locking member from its locking position, a rotatably mounted tumbler disk having a projection for engaging the dog to move it outof the blocking position, a cam on the dog engaged by the locking member for further moving the dog by the movement of the locking member from its locking position, an arm on the dog, and a cam on the tumbler disk engaged by the arm for moving the tumbler disk during the further movement of the dog.
8. A combination lock comprising a locking member, a spring pressed dog urged y spring action to a position for blocking the movement of the locking member from its locking position, a rotatably mounted tumbler disk having a projection for engaging the dog and moving it against the spring action out of its blocking position in one position of the disk, a camon the dog engaged by the locking member for moving it further against the action of the spring during the movement of the locking member from its locking position, an arm on the dog, and a cam on the tumbler disk engaged by the arm for moving the tumbler disk from its position during such further movement of the dog.
9. A combination padlock comprising a casing, a shackle bolt movable therein and having a notch, a post in the casing, a locking member pivotally mounted on the post, means for urging the locking member into the notch as its locking position, a dog pivotally mounted in the casing having a shoulder for blocking the locking member against retraction from its locking position, a tumbler disk mounted on the post and having a projection engaging the dog for moving it out of its blocking position, means on the dog for engagement with the locking member for further moving the dog incident to the movement of the locking member from its locking posi tion, and an arm on the dog engaging the tumbler disk for moving the tumbler disk during such further movement of the dog.
' 10. A combination padlock comprising a casing, a shackle bolt slidable therein and provided with a notch, a pivot post within the casing, a locking member pivotally mounted thereon and engaging the notch as the lock ing position thereof, said locking member yielding to a retracted position under the Withdrawal movement of the shackle bolt, a pivotally mounted dog having a shoulder for engaging the locking member for preventing such yielding movement thereof, a tumbler disk rotatably mounted on the pivot post and having a projection engaging the dog for moving it out of the blocking position, and a latch engaging the locking member in its retracted position, said latch being engaged by 'the shackle during the inward movement thereof to move it from its latching position and release the locking member.
11. A combination padlock comprising a casing, a shackle bolt slidable therein and provided with a notch, a pivot post within the casing, a locking member pivotally mounted thereon and engaging the notch as the locking position thereof, said locking member yielding to a retracted position under the withdrawal movement of the shackle bolt, a pivotally mounted dog having a shoulder for engaging the locking member for preventing such yielding movement thereof, a tumbler disk rotatably mounted on the pivot post and having a projection engaging the dog for moving it out of the blocking position, a latch engaging the locking member in its retracted position, a cam on the shackle engaging the latch to release it during the inward movement of the shackle, and a spring connecting the locking member with the latch for urging the locking member to its locking position for urging the latch to its latching po- SlblOIl.
12. A combination padlock comprising a casing a shackle bolt slidably mounted therein and provided with a notch, a pivot post within the casing, a locking member pivotally mounted on the pivot post and engaging the notch, a pivoted dog having a shoulder for preventing the retraction of the locking member from the notch, tumbler means for mov ing the dog out of its blocking position, said locking member yielding to a retracted position under the withdrawal of the shackle, and a latch for holding the locking member in its retracted position, said latch being released by the inward movement of the shackle.
13. A combination padlock comprising a casing, a shackle bolt slidably mounted therein and provided with a notch, a pivot post within the casing, a locking member pivotally mounted on the pivot post and engaging the notch, a pivoted dog having a shoulder for blocking the retraction of the locking member from the notch, tumbler means for moving the dog out of its blocking position, said locking member yielding to a retracted position under the withdrawal of the shackle, a latch for holding the locking member in it retracted position, said latch being released by the shackle in its inner position, and a spring connecting the locking member with the latch for urging the locking member to its locking position and for urging the latch to its latching position.

A combination padlock comprising a cylindrical casing, a base plate fitting therein, a lug bent up from the base plate, a U- shaped shackle bolt having a longer arm and a notched shorter arm both slidable through the casing and the longer arm slidable through the bent up lug, a stop on the longer arm for preventing its withdrawal through the lug, a center post on the base plate, a locking member pivotally mounted on the center post and having a bent up engaging lug at its end for engaging the notch, a dog pivotally mounted on the base, a spring bearing on the dog, a shoulder on the dog engaged bythe engaging lug of the locking member for preventing the retraction of the locking member from its locking position in the notch, a hookshaped arm on the dog, a tumbler disk mounted on the center post, a cam projection thereon for engaging the hook-shaped arm to move the dog out of its blocking position, a cam on the dog engaged by the engaging lug of the locking member for causing the dog to move further against the action of its spring as the engaging lug moves to its retracted position, a second arm on the dog, a cam surface on the tumbler disk engaged thereby for moving the tumbler disk during such further movement of the dog, a latch member pivotally mounted on the base plate and engaging the locking member for holding it in the retracted position, said latch being engaged by the shackle and moved thereby to release the lo-ckingmember during the inward movement of the shackle, and a spring connecting the latch and locking member for urging them to their latching and locking positions respectively.
15. In a combination lock a tumbler disk having a cam projection, a spring actuated dog engaged and moved by said projection in one position of the disk to release the lock, and false cam projections on the disk to similarly engage said dog Without releasing the lock.
16. A combination lock comprising a move able locking member, a dog blocking the movement of the locking member from its locking position, a tumbler disk having a projection engaging the dog for moving it from the blocking position, means on the dog engaged by the locking member for causing further movement of the dog incident to the movement of the locking member from the locking position, an arm on the dog, there being a recess in the tumbler disk receiving the arm in such further movement of the dog to permit the dog to yield and admit of the movement of the locking member out of its locking position, and false cam projections on the tumbler disk for similarly moving the dog but for which there are no corresponding recesses to receive the arm of the dog.
