, This invention relates to an improvement pending from the under-face of the bed-plate in wire-drawing machines and particularly 16 and is provided at its lower end with a to multi-draw machines for the production worm-wheel 21 meshing into a worm 22 seof wire. I cured to the shaft 23 of an electric motor 24 I The main object of this invention is to proor other suitable source of motive power.
- duce a simple, com act and reliable machine The upper-face of the first draw pull-reel 55 of the type referre to constructed with paris formed with an annular ball-race 25 reticular reference to efiiciency, and in which ceiving a series of ball-bearings 26 which also two or more draws may be effected without roll in a complementary ball-race 27 formed requiring manual rehandling of the wire. in the under-face of an idler-reel 28 having a With the above and other objects in view, central bearing-boss 29 turning freely upon as will appear from the following, my inthe drive-shaft 11 by means of which it is vention consists in a wire-drawing machine centered. I characterized by its provision with a pair of The said idler-reel 28 is provided at its upw drawing-die passages of different diameters; per edge with an outwardly-projecting annuof a first-draw pull-reel for drawing wire lar flange 30 having gear-teeth 31 cut in its through the larger of the two said die-pasperiphery for meshing into a retarding-pinsages; a second-draw pull-reel for drawing ion 32 rotating upon the reduced upper-end wire through the smaller of the two said die- 33 of a stud 34 upstanding from a boss 35 passages; an idler-reel interposed between formed upon the upper-face of the bed-plate 7 the said first-draw pull-reel and the said sec- 16 near the edge thereof, as shown in Fig. 3 0 ond-draw pull-reel; and means for driving of the drawing. the two said pull-reels. Y The upper-face of the idler-reel 28 is My invention further consists in a wireformed with an annular ball-race 36 receiving drawing machine characterized as above and a series of ball-bearings 37 which also bear in having certain other details of construction a race-way 38 formed in the under-face of a and combinations of parts as will be hereinsecond-draw pull-reel 39. after described and particularly recited in The said second-draw pull-reel is coupled the claims. to the vertical driveshaft 11 near the upper- In the accompanying drawing: end thereof by means of a key 40 and is pro- Fi 1 is a view in side elevation of a wire- Vided in the upper-face of its vertical flange drawing machine embodying my invention; 41 with a series of vertical pins 42 designed Fig. 2 is a top or plan view thereof; to increase the capacity of the said reel with- Fig. 3 is a vertical, transverse, sectional out unduly adding weight thereto. 5 view thereof, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, In the operation of my improved drawingbut on a larger scale; and machine, the wire 43 passes from'a storage- Fig. 4 is a broken, detail, sectional view reel, or other source of supply (not shown), taken on the line 4-4 of Fig; 3. through a passage 44 in a first-draw die-block In the embodiment of my invention here- 44 which serves to reduce the diameter there- 40 in chosen for illustration, I employ a firstof one stage, and around the periphery of the draw pull-reel 10 secured to a vertical drivefirst-draw pull-reel 10, from which the convoshaft 11 by means of a key 12 and provided in llltiOns thereof gradually creep upward to the its under-face with an annular ball-race 13 reperiphery of the intermediate or idler-reel 28, ceiving a series of ball-bearings 14 also rollfrom where the wirenow reduced one stage ing in a complementary ball-race 15 formed by being drawn through the first-draw diein the upper-face of a bed-plate 16 supported block 44-passes around an idler-roll 45, upon a skeletonized-frame 17 having supthence through a passage 46 in a second-draw porting-legs 18. die-block 46 and around the periphery of The reduced lower-end 19 of the vertical the flange 41 of the second-draw pul1-reel39,
ve-shaft 11 is journalled in a boss 20 de which latter, being of larger diameter than i the first-dra w pull-reel 10, will serve to keep an appropriate draft upon the Wire which, after having passed through the second-draw die-block 46, is of smaller diameter but of block 46, ample opportunity is given the wire to properly cool.
, To assist in the cooling operation, I encircle the pefiphery of the idler-reel 28 with a ring-like air-tube 49 having a series of air-ports 50 formed in its inner-face and directed, upon the convolutions of the wire wrapped about the said idler-reel. The ringlike air-tube 49 is connected into the vertical reach 51 of an air-supply pipe 52, which carries at its upper end a Segmental air-chamber 53 having its inner-face provided with air-ports '54 directed at the convolutions of wire located upon the periphery of the second-draw pull-reel 39.
To prevent the idler-reel 28 fromvrotating too freely and thus permitting the convolutions of wire wound thereupon to loosen the snarl, I employ a friction-clamp 55 having a pair of complementary resilient arms 56--56 embracing the stud 34 before referred to and frictionally clamped thereupon by means of' a bolt 57. The inner end of the said frictionclamp 55 is provided with an upstanding coupling-pin 58 extending through the retarding-pinion 32 before referred to and acting to restrain the rotation thereof and hence of the idler-reel 28. v
It will be understood by those skilled in the art that my invention may assume varied physical forms without departing from myinventive conce t, and I, therefore,-do not limit myself to the specific embodiment herein chosen for illustration, vbut only as indicated in the appended claims.
