BYRON JACKSON, OF WOODLAND, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE DERRICKS.
Speciticatiou forming part'of Letters Patent No. lS6,5'74,'dated January 23, 1877; application tiled September 19, 1876.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, BYRON JAcKsoN, of Woodland, county ot' Yolo and State of Galifornia, have invented a Portable Derrick t'or delivering grain with horse-forks to a thrashing-machine; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view ot' my invention. i
My invention relates to an improvement in derricks to deliver unthrashed grain to the feeder of a thrashingmachine; and it consists in a novel combination of upright pieces ot' suitable height, framed or braced in two sections to stiften the uprights. The four uprights are fastened together at the top with one holt, and two of them hinged at the bottom in such a manner that one section will der obstructions. The derrick, when in working position, is substantial nenough to move from place to place without takingdown, and requires but two guy-ropes to hold it up while with swivel-hooks, to prevent chaling the Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, A B are four upright timbers, which are hinged at the bottom to the platform or table, upon which they are mounted. These two uprights, A, have their feet secured nearer the top, as shown. The timbers B are separated enough at the top to pass outside the timbers A, and a single bolt, C, serves to unite the whole firmly together. The Vpairs of timbers A and B are stiftened by crossbraces D, and i only two guy-ropes will be needed to support the derrick while at work.
Whenever it is desired to pass beneath obstructions it will only be necessary to detach the fastenings at the feet of the pair of uprights A or B, and then carry the foot over the other pair of uprights. It will be seen that when this is done the pair of uprights A will lie between the pair B, and the whole derrick can be laid down smoothly upon the table or platform.
It will not be necessary to do this While traveling from place, as by this construction the derrick will be rendered stit'tenough to be moved at any time without taking it down.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A derriok for thrashing-machines, consisting of the two pairs ot' uprights A B secured at the top by a bolt, O, and having the bottom otone pair-secured with a narrower base than the other pair,` so that they may be folded together, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
