This inventionjrel'ates to improvements inhand stapling devices. operating in known manner with staples or clips. In the known hand stapling devices, the device is charged by sliding the clips from the package onto the winged channel, which is to receive the clips. However this cannot be carried out with certainty, so that the clips often have to be applied one by one. If a staple got bent or squeezed or the like, all the clips had to'be removed from the device by drawing or shaking ed the same and the clips again had to be replaced one by one with a considerable loss of time. Further, in order not to unduly increase the entire length of the apparatus, the strokeof the spring for feeding the clips had to be limited, thereby restricting in the appatus the number of clips (about 50 pieces) and this again called for a frequent charging. The invention provides arrangement whereby the charging as well asthe discharging of the clips can be carried out quickly and positively and at the same time the. number of inserted clips is increased,

The arrangement of the main parts of the hand stapling device deviates not essentially but only in operation from the known constructions and consists of the bed plate 1 which is connected by the hinge 2 to the lever piece 3, on the free end ofwhich is guided the top die 4. If a number of clips have been used, so thatthe spring is slack, the spring loaded rod will be pushed forward thereby placin in tension the spring and its end is place into the hole 17.
A spring 18 is arranged below the hinge and acts on the lever part 3 in such a way, that the same usually is held in the open position and only is turned down by the pressure on the die when using the device.
The construction of the member 6 inthe shape of a hollow'body with eyes 10 allows the hand stapling device, after removing bolt 2, to be used in connection with a special bed plate 19, which according to the invention is shaped like a ruler and preferably graduated and carries an arm 20, which allows the paper to be pinned together to be pushed underneath, so that the sheet can be stitched also in the centre. The graduation ofthe ruler allows a uniform insertion of the sheets.

In the stapling device above described the bed plate, according to the length of the backward extendin staple guide, is little turnable at most at a but 90, so that the band stapling device cannot be used at an object where the bed plate can not pass underneath,
-for instance nailing at boxes or walls and so forth, as the staple mechanism cannot be placed flat on the object-to be treated in view .of the obstruction by the bed plate.
In the construction shown in Figs. 8 and 9 this drawback is avoided in that the rearwardly extending part of the hinged bed plate 13 recessed at least over the width of the staple guide, to allow a turning of the bed plate of substantially-180 with respect to the staple guide, that is tosay that the staple mechanism and the outwardly turned bed plate come to lie substantially in a line.
The bed plate 1 is pivoted to the staple mechanism by means of the hinge. The bed plate 1 is provided with an opening or recess 24, which extends from the hinge to the rear end to allow a swinging of the bed plate 1 with respect to the staple mechanism at 180 into theposition shown in Fig. 9. Now the middle of the box-lid or the like, so that it is possible to fix the lid on the box 26 or strengthening strips to the lid in a most simple manner, without interfering with the bed plate.
To allow for a staple mechanism with long backward extending staple guide 3, the bed plate is also provided with an opening 25 in front of hinge 2, in which the projecting end of the staple guide 3 lies, if the bed plate is tFurned out that is in the position shown in ig. 9. I
In view of the particular arrangement of the bed plate it is possible to apply the hand :stapling device to walls or other large surfaces without removing the bed plate.
I claim 1. A stapling device comprising a lever piece, a pivot pin therefor, a carrying and guiding member for staples bent out of sheet metal and adapted to slide in the lever piece, said carrying and guiding member being adapted to yieldingly slide in tapered grooves and being secured by the pivot pin by means of a lug carried by' said member, the upper portion of the member being provided with spaced openings, and a spring feed device for staples including a guide rod adjustably engageable in the opening of said member corresponding to the condition of the supply of clips.
2. A stapling device as claimed in claim 1, characterized by the provision of a rulerlike graduated bed plate, and a tongue punched and bent out of said bed plate, said tongue permitting the paper which is to'be fastened to be pushed underneath and having on its free end a bearing eye for the pivot pin.
