TOOTH-B RUSH.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 18,653, dated November 17, 1857.

To all 'whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, H. NICHOLS VVADs- WORTH, of the city of Vashington and District of Columbia, have invented a new and Improved Tooth-Brush; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and ex act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings of the same.

The nature of my invention consists in separating the bunches of bristles more than in the common brush, so as to give more elasticity and enable them to enter between the interstices of the teeth-having the brush wide that it may be imperative on the part of the patient to brush the gums thoroughly; the brush is partly circular from heel to point the more readily to fit the circle or arch formed by the teeth, and from side to side the bristles are a little concave the more readily to adapt themselves to the oval form of the teeth; toward the point the bristles are shorter and intended to project as far as possible beyond the end and at as acute an angle as possible, while the back of bone ivory or other material is thin and rounded off so as to occupy as little room as possible, and forming almost a projecting pointof bristles, particularly intended to force its Way far back in the mouth between the muscles of the cheeks, and jaws, and the back or molar teeth, and thoroughly free them from impurities, and while it keeps the teeth in these places clean, and highly polished, it also keeps the gums healthy and vigorous. It is intended to be of three, four and five rows of bristles.

My invention embraces the following features to wit: lst, the concave form of the surface of the bristles as represented from A to B Figure l. 2d, the circular form of the surface of the bristles as represented from C to D in Fig. 2d. 3d, the projection of the bristles beyond the end of the brush as represented in Fig. 2d at letter D, and which projection improves the brush by being at a still greater acute angle with the back. 4th, the wedge-shaped back as repre sented in the drawings and described in the specification, for the purpose of allowing the brush to penetrate thoroughly under the muscles of the cheek and around the back or molar teeth.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- A tooth brush having all the above described features combined and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
