Description
To all whom it may concern:
A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELMoRE A. BARNEs, 0E PITTsRURe, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN scoops.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,521, dated January 23, 1877 g application filed May 1, 1876.
Be it known that l, ELMoRE A. BARNES, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scoops; and Indo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which.-
Figure 1 is a View of a scoop embodying my improvements, showing the back-strap continuous with the shovel. Fig. 2 is a front view, the front strap beingremoved, and Fig.
. 3 isa sectional view of the same.
parts wherever Like letters refer to like they occur.
My invention relates to the manufacture of scoops. .y
In scoops as usually manufactured the sheet `is first cut to the required size, and a V-shaped piece is -then eut from the blank at a point corresponding to the attachment of the straps, so that when the blank is submitted to the` dies 'it may readily assume thedesired shape. Finally, the straps are riveted to the scoop, the point of the back strap being forward of the curve, and the rivet which secul'esvthe points of the straps as well as the point of thel back strap itself beiigin the line of wear it frequently happens that the rivet gives way and the point of the back strap turns up or breaks ofi', weakening the scoop and render-4 ing it liable to break across at the next rivets. For these reasons many scoops become destroyed before they are near worn ont.
The object of the present invention is to obvia-te these objections. y
I will now proceed to describe my invention, so that `others skilled in the art to which it appertains may apply the same. In the drawing, A indicates the scoop provided with the straps ct b, one of which, preferable the back strap a, is continuous with the scoop, and the other is secured by riveting in the usual manner. In forming such a scoop the blank is cut with a projecting portion or v tongue corresponding in location to one vof and the front'strap is then riveted to the i scoop, for by so. doing, in addition to the increased strength, the rivets which secure the front strap may be put well down on the point of the strap, and though the rivet-head b1 projects in the line of wear and may be worn off, it can readily beV replaced, and the point of the riveted strap, being on the front of the scoop, will be protected, and will not curl up or be broken voi'. In case the projecting tongue is swaged by the dies into the position of the front strap, which can be readily done, it' desired, the advantage of strength and non-liability ofthe shovel to crack at tne second rivets b2, when the point-rivet b1 gives way, will result the saine as before specified; but the riveted strap will not be protected, and the point will be liable to curl up or be broken off, so as tov require a new back strap.
- Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
A scoop having a deep bowl struck up, and straps forming a socket for the handle, one strap being continuous with the bowl yand the other riveted thereto, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I, the said ELMORE- A. BARNES, have hereunto set my hand.
ELMORE A. BARNES. Witnesses:
