SHUFORD LOOP SELVAGE DEVICE Filed Oct. 13, 1950 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented June 28, 1932 Y UNirEn STATES PATENT OFFICE HURNDON F. SHUFORD, OF LA GRANGE, GEORGIA LOO]? SELVAGE DEVICE Application filed. October 13, 1930. Serial No. 488,448.
This invention relates to an attachment for ing the brake construction that prevents looms, the primary object of the invention overrunning of the reel. being to provide an attachment of this char- Referring to the drawings in detail, the
acter to facilitate the construction of special reference character designates the end supv 5 loop selvages on heavy fabrics. ports of the frame of the loom to which the An important object of the invention is to front bar 6 and rear bar 7 are connected. rovide an attachment of this character which The reference character '8 designates the will gradually feed the wire, used in forming warp threads of the cloth being woven, and the loop selvage on heavy cloth, thereby as shown these threads pass over the roll 9, 10 changing the point of contact between the lay through the heddles, and through the reeds of the loom and the wire, to insure against of the lay, in the usual and Well known manthe wire breaking, due to wear caused by the ner. lay moving thereover. The reference character 10 designates the A further object of the invention is to prowire used in the construction of the loop sell5 vide an attachment of this character which vage of heavy cloth material, the wire being may be readily and easily installed on a loom, Wound the dr m 1 hich is mounted in without the necessity of making alterations the frame 12, which in turn is secured to the in a loom construction, to mount the device. bar 7 as clearly shown by Figure 2 of the With the foregoing and other objects in drawings. It will, of course, be understood 2 view, which will appear as the description that the wire 10'passes through the eye of proceeds, the invention resides in the combithe outer heddle and iS shed thereby to form nation and arrangement of parts and in the the selvage loops; The frame 12 is formed details of construction hereinafter described With grooves to receive the shaft 13 of the and claimed, it being understood that changes weighted roller, which contacts with the wire in the precise embodiment of the invention to permit the wire to be properly fed from herein disclosed, may be made within the the drum 11. At one end of the shaft on scope of what is claimed, without departing which the drum 11 is mounted, is a gear 15, from the spirit of the invention. which is engaged by the worm 16 mounted Referring to the drawings: on the upper end of the vertical shaft 17, so Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view that rotary movement of the shaft 17 will be through a loom equipped with an attachment imparted t the drum, to unwind the wire 10, constructed in accordance with the invention! mounted thereon.
Figure 2 is a fragmental elevational View At the lower end of the shaft 17 is a ratchet of the attachment. Wheel 18 which is engaged by the sliding Figure 3 is a fragmental plan view illuspawl 19 that moves in the hollow shaft 20, trating the pawl and ratchet employed in the pawl being held to its extended position transmitting movement of a power shaft to by means of the spring 21. As clearly shown the reel of the device. by the drawings, the lower end of the shaft Figure 4 is a sectional view through the 17 is mounted in the bearing 22. hollow pawl supporting arm. The hollow shaft 20 extends laterally from Figure 5 is a fragmental sectional view the upper end of the bell crank lever 23. through a modified form of the invention. The lower end of the bell crank lever is in- Figure 6 .is a rear elevational view, illus- 'dicated bythe reference character 24, and as trating the modified form of the invention. shown has pivotal conn'ection'with the rod 25 Figure 7 is a sectional view through the that carries an eccentric 26 at its lower end, wire reel. the eccentric being mounted on the power Figure 8 is a sectional View taken at right shaft 27 so that rotary movement of the angles to Figure 7. power shaft will act to reciprocate the rod Figure 9 is a side elevational view of the 25, to operate the bell crank lever connected 1o modified form of the invention, and illustrattherewith.
In the form of the invention as shown by sheet 2 of the drawings, the reference character 28 designates the reel within which the wire, used in forming the loop selvage, is mounted, the wire passing through an opening in the reel 28, as clearly shown by Fig. 7 of the drawings. Connected with the reel 28 is a coiled spring 29 that has connection with the arm 30, that is secured to the frame of the loom, the spring acting to yieldingly hold the reel in its normal position. The reel 28 is mounted on the shaft 31 which in turn is mounted in bearings formed at the upper ends of the arms 32, one end of the shaft 31 extending beyond the reel 28, where it is supplied with a ratchet wheel 33.
Cooperating with the ratchet wheel, is a pawl 34 carried at one end of the arm 35, which is also mounted on the shaft 31, the arm 31 extending to a position beyond the periphery of the ratchet wheel 33.
Connected with the arm 35 is a link 36 which in turn is connected with one end of the arm 37, the opposite end of the arm being conected with the rod 38, which carries an eccentric 39 at its lower end, the eccentric being mounted on the power shaft 40.
A brake band 41 operates in connection with the ratchet wheel 33 and acts to restrict movement of the ratchet wheel and shaft operated thereby. A coiled spring 42 is used in connection with the wire over which the loops of the selvage are formed, to hold the wire taut at all times.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that due to the construction shown and described, the wire is constantly being moved forwardly at a rate of speed slower than the speed of travel of the cloth being woven, to the end that the lay, which in the present showing is indicated by the reference character 43, contacts with the wire at various points throughout the length thereof, to the end that wear of the wire caused by the lay contacting herewith, is reduced to the minimum.
I claim: 7
In a loom, the combination of warp-carrying means including a heddle, with a wire threaded through the eye of the heddle and carried by the warp-carrying means to extend along an edge of the warp to form filling loops in the selvage, and means operated to feed the wire through the heddle eye at a slower rate of advance than the travel of the warp to shift the bending point of the wire in the heddle eye.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature.
