In the form of the invention as shown by sheet 2 of the drawings, the reference character 28 designates the reel within which the wire, used in forming the loop selvage, is mounted, the wire passing through an opening in the reel 28, as clearly shown by Fig. 7 of the drawings. Connected with the reel 28 is a coiled spring 29 that has connection with the arm 30, that is secured to the frame of the loom, the spring acting to yieldingly hold the reel in its normal position. The reel 28 is mounted on the shaft 31 which in turn is mounted in bearings formed at the upper ends of the arms 32, one end of the shaft 31 extending beyond the reel 28, where it is supplied with a ratchet wheel 33.
Cooperating with the ratchet wheel, is a pawl 34 carried at one end of the arm 35, which is also mounted on the shaft 31, the arm 31 extending to a position beyond the periphery of the ratchet wheel 33.
Connected with the arm 35 is a link 36 which in turn is connected with one end of the arm 37, the opposite end of the arm being conected with the rod 38, which carries an eccentric 39 at its lower end, the eccentric being mounted on the power shaft 40.
A brake band 41 operates in connection with the ratchet wheel 33 and acts to restrict movement of the ratchet wheel and shaft operated thereby. A coiled spring 42 is used in connection with the wire over which the loops of the selvage are formed, to hold the wire taut at all times.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that due to the construction shown and described, the wire is constantly being moved forwardly at a rate of speed slower than the speed of travel of the cloth being woven, to the end that the lay, which in the present showing is indicated by the reference character 43, contacts with the wire at various points throughout the length thereof, to the end that wear of the wire caused by the lay contacting herewith, is reduced to the minimum.
I claim: 7
In a loom, the combination of warp-carrying means including a heddle, with a wire threaded through the eye of the heddle and carried by the warp-carrying means to extend along an edge of the warp to form filling loops in the selvage, and means operated to feed the wire through the heddle eye at a slower rate of advance than the travel of the warp to shift the bending point of the wire in the heddle eye.
