CLOTHES WASHING DEVICE Application filed October 7, 1931. Serial No. 567,480.
This invention relates to clothes washing devices commonly known as clothes pounders, and the invention comprises an elongated handle having afixed to one end, a circular metallic member to which is secured a cylindrical piece of fabric having secured to one end a perforated metallic disk for the passage of water. Theinvention further comprises a coil spring mounted within the cylindrical piece of fabric for normallyholding the perforated metallic disk in an extended position.
The primary object of this invention, is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which will compress upon force applied to the handle to create a suction within the cylindrical fabric member upon continued reciprocation of the handle.
Astill further object of this invention, is
to provide a deviceof the above mentioned character which will function to draw dirt and other foreign matter out of clothes being washed by continuously reciprocating the handle of the device: when the perforated metallic disk is incontact with the clothes.
Other objects and advantages of the invention, will become apparent during the course of the following description, forming a part of this specification and in which,
Figure 1 is a top elevation of the invention showing the circular configuration of the top metallic disk and illustrating the guard extending therefrom;
Figure 2 is a bottom elevation of the device, illustrating the perforated bottom metallic disk and showing the manner in which the water guard is extended over the diametrical cross-section of the device;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the invention illustrating the manner in which the cylindrical fabric member is secured to the top metallic disk and the bottom perforated me tallic disk;
I Figure 4 is a vertical cross-sectional view illustrating the structural details of the device;
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the device, showing the same compressed and illustrating the manner in which the cylindrical fabric member is collapsed during its opera.- tion; and r v g V Figure 6 is a fragmentary enlarged crosssectional view, illustrating a detail of construction of the connection between the cyliinirical fabric member and the top metallic In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustrating the invention and wherein like 3 reference characters will be employed to designate like parts throughout the same, the reference character 5' will generally be em ployed to designate a circular metallic disk partially cup-shaped and having an angular inturned portion (ivcontinuing. outwardlyin a flared manner terminating in a beaded rim portion 7. Secured to the circular'metallic disk 5 is a handle receiving socket 8 having an annular flange 9 rigidly secured to the metallic disk 5. A handle 10 may be securedin the handle socket 8 and held therein by screws as at 11. p
Secured to the circular metallic member 5 is a cylindrical fabric member 12 havingone end thereof overturned as at 13 for forming a pocket for receiving an annular split ring 14. The annular ring 14 and overturned portion 13 of the cylindricalfabric are adapted to be received in the annular. recess formed by the inturned portion 6 ofthe metallic disk memher 5. If desired, the ring 14 may be split so that it can be depressed for removing the fabric 12 from the head 5. v
Removably secured to the outer end of the cylindrical fabric 12 is a metallic perforated disk 15 which is also cup-shaped and is provided with side walls 16 terminating in a beaded portion 17 over which the fabric 12 maybe placed and held in position by a circular-tying element or the like. Ithas been found in practice thatthe beaded portion 17 is suflicient for holding the metallic disk15 to thelower open end of the fabric member 12. Assclearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 4, the cup-shaped metallic disk member 15 is provided with a series of openings 18 for the passage of water when the deviceisused for washing clothes.
It. is to beunderstood, that the formoflthe invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as. a preferred embodiment of the same and that. various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of; parts may be resorted torwithout departing, fronrrthe spirit of the invention as defined by the scope of the subj'oined claims- I A. clothes pounder of the character described, comprising, ametallic disk. member,
saidLm'etallic; disk member having. aninterior annular recess, a handle secured. to the metallicdisk member, a. cylindrical fabric member having one endsecured in the. annular recessed portion, a cup-shaped member having. a plurality of openingsin the; bottom thereof secured. to the opposite. end of the cylindrical fabric member, and a coilspring mounted within the cylindrical. fabric member, having its ends bearing. against themetallic disk member and the metallic cup shaped member.
i 2. A clothes pounder of the character described, comprising a metallic disk member having an annular internal recess portion, an outwardly flared annular. extension extending from the annular recess portion, a handle secured to the metallic disk-shaped member, a cylindrical fabric member having one end thereof overturned for'receiving a clamping ring, said 'clamping'ring and overturned edge being adapted to be received within. the an.- nular recess' portion', a; perforated cup-shaped metallic member secured to the opposite end of'the cylindrical fabric member, and a coil spring mounted within the cylindrical fabric member for holding the perforated. cupshaped metallic member in an extendedpositi-on relative to. the disk-shaped metallic member,
3. A clothes pounder of the character described, comprising a metallic disk member, a handle secured to the metallic disk member, an annular extension formed on the metallic disk member extending downwardly and outwardly, a cylindrical fabric member having one end secured to the metallic member, a perforated cup-shaped metallic member secured to the opposite end of the cylindrical fabric member, and a coil spring mountedwithin the cylindrical fabric member for holding the cup-shaped perforated member in an extended relation relative to the disk-shaped metallic member.
4 A clothesp'ounder of the character described, comprising .a metallic disk-shaped 7 member arcuately curved in. cross-section, an amiularrecess'ed portion formed in the diskshaped member, said annular recessed portion terminating" in an outwardly flared annular portion, a handle secured to the diskshaped member, a cylindrical fabric member having one end held within the recessed portion of the disk-shaped member,a perforated cup-shaped metallic member secured to the opposite end of the cylindrical fabric member, and a coil spring mounted within the cylindrical fabric member, having one end bearing against the disk-shaped metallic member" andthe other end engaging the cup-shaped metallic member.
5. A clothes pounder'of the character de scribed, comprising a metallic disk-shaped member arcuately curved in cross-section, an. annular'recessed portion formed at the edge of the arcuately curved metallic disk member, anv annular outwardly and. down.- wardly'flared portionsecured to the recessed portion, a handlesecured to the metallic disks-haped member, a cylindrical fabric member. having'one of its open ends secured within the annular recessed portion of the metallic disk-shaped member, a perforated cupshaped. metallic member secured to the opposite open end of: thecylindrical fabric member, and a. coil spring mounted. within the cylindrical fabric member. having one end engaging themetallitc disk-shaped member and the opposite end engaging the metallic cup-shaped perforated member In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
