My invention relates to railway rolling stock and consists in a novel main steam cylinder and steam control valve structure for locomotives and may include thek combination therewith of parts usually assembled with such structure. My invention is particularly applicable to a` structure of this type formed in an integral unit either by-use of a one-piece casting or by welding two or more separately formed parts into an integra-l whole.
My invention contemplates the use of three or more cylinders including the usual steam cylinders at the side of the locomotive and at least one intermediate cylinder. VStructures of this type leave little room for clearance between the different members mentioned and the inclusion of all of these parts, together with exhaust steam passagesin the desirable one-piece integral form has been attended with difficulties arising from the inability of workmen to get at the walls of the different cylinders and chambers which are spaced from the outer portions of the structure.
The main object of my invention is to overcome these diffliculties byV arranging the cylinders, control valves andsteam passages so' that access may be had to the parts hitherto inaccessible without departing from the advantages attending the formation of an integral structure.
In the preferred form of my invention, I form the cylinders and the boiler support integral with the locomotive framing members thereby eecting a maximum of permanent rigidity in the locomotive structure, the attainment of which end isa further object of my present invention.

In this view there is no showing of the lower portions of the structure or of the forwardly and rearwardly extending frame members.

Main steam cylinders 3 and 4 are located at thev sides of frame members l and 2 and are integrallyv united therewith by means of transverse walls 5 and 6, and an intermediate main steam cylinder 7 is located abovethe frame members, being supported by suitable webs 8` which constitute extensions of the inner walls of the box-shaped members 1 and 2.
Each of the main steam cylinders is provided with an individual steam control valve chamber 9, 10 and 11, respectively, the valve chambers being mounted on ytheir respective cylinders by suitable webs 12 which form steam'passages between the valves and cylinders. Y
Exhaust steam conduits 13 lead upwardly from each end of steam chamber 10 and then extend inwardly and upwardly and towards each other, merging in a common discharge member 14 located above center cylinder 7, the walls of conduits 13 14 being spaced from the wall of cylinder 7.
Vertical transverse walls 5 and `6 unite with the cylinders and with the wallsof con-y duits 13 to form the upright members of a boiler support which also comprises the horizontal plate 17 provided with inclined flanges 18 at its sides to which the smoke-box sheets may be secured in the usual manner. lThe upper walls of conduits 13 merge with plate 17 and the discharge members 14 preferably extend throughand project above the top of plate 17. The structure provides suitable passages A, B, C, D and E whereby access may be had to the portions of the walls of cylinders 4 and 7 and chamber 10 which would be inaccessible if the exhaust steam passageway extended directed inwardly with its lower wall merging with the wall of the center cylinder. H
Similarly, exhaust steam passages 19 Vextend upwardly from chamber 9 and then inwardly above and spaced from chamber 11 and curve in a substantially longitudinal direction and also upwardly. They merge with each other at 2O to form a discharge member leading through and projecting above boiler support plate 17 as indicated at 21. The exhaust passages from chamber 11 are'indicated at 22 and they extend upwardly and inwardly beneath the inner portions of passages 19-20 -unitiiigwitheach other in a common discharge member 22a, the lowei` wall of which is spaced from the adjacent l portion of the wall of cylinder 7. This arrangement of passages 19 and 22A provides a space H (see Figure 7) between passages 19 and 22 and chamber 11 andcylinder 7 wherebyiaccess to the adjacent walls of the passages 19 and 22, cha'niberkll, and cylinder 7 may be had for inspection and repairs.
A substantially horizontal web 23 extends between webs 8 intermediate the upper` and lower portions thereof and acylindrical elenient 24, having a vertical axis, is mounted on web 23 and forms a pivotal connection for the engine truck (not shown).
The upwardly and inwardly inclined extensions 25 on webs 8 merge with the wall of center cylinder 7 and` the adjacent parts form a box-like structure beneath the center cylinder and about the upper portion of element 24. An opening F in wall 5 and an opening G in web 23 provide access to the iiiterior of the box-like structure and to the jacent the longitudinal center of the locomotive structure, a steam control chamber located intermediate said'cylinders, and anexhaust steam conduit leading from said side cylinder to thev portion 'of said structure 5 above said center cylinder, the vwall of said conduit being spaced throughout its length from the walls of said center cylinder and chamber.
2. A structure as set forth in claim 1 consisting of an integral unit, there being passageways between said conduit and center cylinder and chamber thereby providing access to the opposing walls of the same.
3. In a locomotive structure, spaced longitudinal frame members having upwardly and inwardly inclined extensions, a main steam cylinder mounted on said extensions, a transverse web between said members, and an element mounted on said web below said cylinder for pivoting a truck to the structure.
4. In a locomotive structure, longitudinal frame members in the form of vertical webs and provided with upwardly extending pro,k jections, transverse vertical walls extending between said webs and extending above the same, a substantially horizontal web below the top of said vertical webs and connecting' the same, whereby .av box-like structure is formed, and a main steam cylinder mounted on the upper portion of said box-like structure.
5. In alocomotive structure, longitudinal frame members in the form of vertical webs and provided with upwardly extending projections, transverse verticahwalls extending between said webs and extending above the sa-me, a substantially horizontal web below the top of said vertical webs and connecting the same, whereby a box-like structure is formed, a main steam cylinder mounted on the upper portion of said box-like structure, and a truck pivoting element mounted on said horizontal web. i
6. In a locomotive structure, longitudinal frame members in the form or vertical webs and provided with upwardly extending projections, transverse vertical walls extending between said webs and extending above the same, a substantially horizontal web below the top of said-vertical webs and connecting the same, whereby a box-like structure is formed, and a main steam cylinder mounted on the upper portion of said box-like structure, all of said parts constituting an integral structure, there being openings in certain of the parts to provide access to the lower surface of said cylinder.`
7. In a locomotive structure, a side cylinder, a steam control chamber above said side cylinder, a center cylinder, an exhaust steam conduit leading from the ends of said chamber towards said center cylinder and curving substantially longitudinally and upwardly above said center cylinder, said conduit being spaced throughout its length from said center. cylinder, there being substantial openings between the end portions of said conduit and the space between said conduit and center cylinder being open to the outside of the structure through said openings to permit access to the opposing inside walls of the same for cleaning and inspection purposes.
8. In a locomotive structure, a side cylinder, a steam control chamber above said side cylinder, a center cylinder, a steam control chamber for said center cylinder located between said side cylinder control chamber and said center cylinder, an exhaust steam conduit leading from the ends of said side cylinder control chamber towards said center cylinder and curving longitudinally and upwardly and having a single discharge opening above said center cylinder, said conduit being spaced from said center cylinder and its control chamber to provide access to the opposing walls of the same.
9. In a locomotive structure, a side cylinder, a steam control chamber above said side cylinder, a center cylinder, a steam control chamber for said center cylinder located between said side cylinder control chamber and said center cylinder, an exhaust steam conduit leading from the ends of said side cylinder control chamber towards said center cylinder and curving longitudinally and up' -wardly and having a single discharge opening above said center cylinder, an exhaust steam conduit leading from said center cylinder control chamber and extending alongside of said first mentioned conduit, said conduits being spaced from said center cylinder and center control chamber, the space between said conduits and said center cylinder and control chamber therefor providing access to the opposing walls of the same.
10. In a locomotive cylinder saddle structure, a boiler support plate, elements supporting said plate at the front and rear thereof, a main steam cylinder and a valve chamber therefor located beneath said plate and between said elements, members in the lower part of the structure supporting said cylinder and chamber, a live steam passage leading outwardly in one direction from said chamber, and exhaust conduits leading upwardly from said chamber through said plate, said cylinder and chamber being spaced from all other parts of the structure and said conduits being spaced from said cylinder whereby access to opposing surfaces of said cylinder, chamber, and conduits is facilitated for cleaning and inspection purposes.
