This invention relates to new and useful all and has special reference to the base construction thereof, although from certain aspects the invention .is directed typiawriter cabinets. 1
eretofore typewriter cabinets have been constructed with sheet metal covers and coto portable operating bases formed of wood: In practice these wooden bases have been'a continuous source of trouble in various countries where the climatic conditions are such as to cause these wooden bases to become warped or distorted to such an extent that the bases become unserviceable and at the same time transmit a distorting eflect to the typewriting machines enclosed in said cabinets. A further objec tion to these wooden bases, when used under these climatic conditions, is that when they become warped or distorted it is impossible to attach and secure the metal cover thereto. In order to overcome the objections above noted, I have constructed the base of sheet metal and have reinforced the base in a manner'which will maintain the same against bending or flexing even when subjected to hard usage. I have also associated means with the sheet metal base which will not only cushion and support the same out of contact with the desk or other support, but which will also function as a sound-deadening and means and thereby eliminate the ring or drum sound which would otherwise exist if the machinefwere attached directly to the sheet metal base. i I Y My invention also embodies 'a typewriter cabinet comprising a metal base, a cover movable relative thereto for permitting ready acm cess to themachine contained therein, or for protecting the machine against dust and other foreign matterwhen the cover is in closed position, and means fol-flocking the cover and base against relative movement whereby access to the machine by unauthorized persons is prevented. igure 3 is a cross sectional'view thereof. A s disclosed 1n the accompanylng drawlngs, my invention comprises a typewriter f cabinet consisting of a base A and a cover B adapted to enclose and house a typewriting machine 0.
The base A is preferably stamped from a single sheet of metal and is preferably rectangular in outline. This base is provided with a flange 5 which extends downwardly around the marginal edges thereof, and with a centrally located depressed'portion 6 having a series of transversely disposed reinforcing ribs 7 pressed therein. The base projects beyond the typewriting machine C and reinforcin strips 8, 8 of wood or the like are secure to the under face of the base by rivets 8a or other suitable fastening means. These reinforcing strips extend lengthwise of the base and are located between the censide flanges 5 and project downwardly to a point below the lower edge of said flange. These reinforcing strips 8 are preferably formed of seasoned wood and, by having the lowerfacesdisposedbelowtheloweredgeofthe flange 5, said strips not only strengthen and are being operated or when the carriage or segment is being shifted. In order to further assist in eliminatin the ring or drum sound, I have provided yie base and the machine and have also provided yieldable means which are connected to the base and-which iroject downwardly to a point below the re nforcing strips whereby, when the machine is positioned for operation' on a table-or the like, said machine is supported entirely by the upper and lower yieldable means and not by the metal base.
To this end, I have provided four inverted cups or feet 9 which are preferably formed of rubber, although other suitable material may dable means between the be employed. These cups 9 are positioned in spaced relation in the centrally located depressed portion 6 and directly under the typewriting machine C. I have also provided four inverted cu s or feet 10 of yieldable material such as rubber or the like and have located these cups directly below the depressed portion 6 and in registration with the upper cups 9. The lower edges or bottoms of the cups 9 are located in a plane below the reinforcing elements 8. Each pair of upper and lower cups 9 and 10 is secured to the base and to the machine by means of a clamping screw 11 having a head '12, the screw being pushed upwardly through alined openings in the cups and base and having its upper end threaded for engagement in an opening 13 formed in the typewriting machine frame, the openings for receiving the screws 11 in the base being indicated at 14. In order to prevent undue'compression of the rubber cups 10, I have provided a metal washer 15 which is disposed between the cup and the head 12 of the clamping screw. Associated with the upper and lower cups 9 and 10 are caps 16 and 17 respectively, said caps being of hard material relative to the cups. These caps are made to conform to th e shape of the cups and function to prevent undue spreading of these cups, and also function to prevent tipping or folding under of the rubber cups in case the base and the machine are slid or pushed along a desk or other support.
Thus the metal base is supported between the upper cups 9 and the lower cups 10 and consequently the base will never contact with the desk or other support. Therefore the metal base A is in no sense a base or support for the machine, except when the machine is being transported. The base acts as a support for the cover when the machine is being transported, and also when the cover is an enclosure and a dust protector, or' when it is desired'to cover the machine for any purpose whatever.
The cover B is of sheet metal construction and is hingedly connected at its rear portion to the rear portion of'the base A. To this end, the base A is provided with spaced openings 18, 18 for receiving hinge. pieces 19. The
cover B is also provided with a carrying han-. dle 20 whereby the cabinet may be manually,
transported if desired, and a lock which is indicated generally at 21 is supported on the front wall of the cover for cooperation with an opening 22 formed in the front part of the base A. p y
I claim:
1. In a typewriter cabinet, a sheet metal.
base having a depressed portion, an inverted cup of yieldable material located in said depressed portion, an inverted cup of yieldable material disposed below said depressed portion and projecting below the lower face of the base, and a screw extending upwardly through said cups anddepressed portion of the base for connecting said parts and a typewriting machine against relative movements.
2. In a typewriter cabinet, a sheet metal base provided with a downwardly extending flange around the edge thereof, reinforcing strips secured to the under face of the base adjacent said flange, said base being provided with a depressed portion between the reinforcing strips cushioning means disposed above and below said depressed portion, and means for securing said cushioning means and base to a typewriting machine, the cushioning means respectively projecting above the upper face of the base and below the marginal flange thereof.
3. In a typewriter cabinet, a sheet metal base provided with a downwardly extending flange around the edge thereof, reinforcing strips secured to the under face of the base adjacent said flange, said base being provided witha depressed portion between the reinforcing strips, cushioning means disposed above andbelow said depressed portion, and means for securing said cushioning means and base to a typewriting machine, the cushioning means respectively projecting above the upper face of the base and below the marginal flange thereof, said reinforcing strips projecting below the lower edge of the marginal flange and terminating above the bottom of the lower cushioning means.
