JEWELRY BOX Filed Nov. 30, 1931 Patented June 21, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN M. SHIELDS, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR 'ro F. H. NOBLE & conrnNxyor CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A oonron-A'rIoN or ILLINOIS JEWELRY BOX My invention relates to a novel ornamental box designed particularly for the display of small articles of jewelry and the like, such as wrist watches, lockets, brooches, pins, etc.,
and its object is the provision of an attractive container which can be used for display of the contained article in a show case or on a counter and may be conveniently handled when exhibiting the article, and which is suitable and desirable as an ornamental container to be sold with the article. To this end I have devised and invented the novel jewelry box hereinafter described in detail, and consisting of body and lid portions and a hinged supporting member arranged to support and when in extending position, display the article which the box was designed to receive.
My invention resides in'the construction and arrangement of the supporting member of the container with reference to the body and lid members, as will be evident from the description of its construction hereinafter given, the essential elements of my invention being more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective of my novel jewelry box, closed;
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the Same, with the parts in display position; Fig. 3 is alongitudinal vertical section of the box, the plane of the section and direction of view being indicated by the broken line 3-3 of Fig. 1; I
Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same, as indicated by thebroken line 4-4 of Fig. 3; and
' Fig. 5 is a perspective of the box with'the supporting member'or section in lower position and thelid portion of the box raised.
Like reference characters indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawing.
The body or base portion A of my novel jewelry box in the present instance consists of a sheet metal plate bent into proper shape to form a box body and covered with a facing a of ornamental fabric. In the present in- Stance the bottom section 1 of the sheet metal is formed with upwardly-extending end and side sections 2, 3 and 4 at the ends and rear severally formed with similar depending 7 vertical flanges marked 5, 6 and 7, respective ly. At each end of the front of the base, a
small inclined triangular section 8 extends upwardly from the bottom section 1 to the upper line of the adjacent end sections.
Hinged to the front edge of the bottom section of the body is the supporting member B, which like the body portion of the box is formed of a sheet metal plate covered with an ornamental facing material, marked Z). This supporting member includes a front side section 9, which extends from the hinge line along which it is hinged to the bottom section of the box body upwardly at the same inclination as the triangular sections 8 of the body and which constitutes the front side wall of the base of the container; a connected top display section 10; verticalend sections 11 and 12 extending downwardly from the top section and arranged to fit between the end sections of the box body, and a rear side Section 13 which extends downwardly from the top section, this section in the present instance being for the sake of symmetry of appearance when the box is open for display inclined oppositely to the front side section 9.
The display section 10 of the Supporting member is suitably formed, or equipped with fastening members, to adapt it to display the article which the box is designed to receive. In the present instance, to adapt it to support and display a wrist watch, the center of the display section is cut out to provide flanges 14 extending downwardly from a rectangular opening, and a covered ornamental pad 15 is provided, having end flange 16-16 arranged to frictionally engage two of the flanges 14 at opposite ends of the opening in the display section.
The lid or cover portion C of the box, like the body portion, is constructed of sheet metal covered with an ornamental facing marked a, and is'hinged to the top of the rear side section 3 of the bodyportion, preferably with a spring hinge 17 as is usual in boxes of this character. The cover member consists of a top wall 18, end walls 19 -19, and front and rear walls marked 20 and 21 respectively, and may be provided with a walls are inclined at angles corresponding to the inclination of. the front and end walls of the base portion of the box;
From the foregoing it will be manifest that when the hinged supporting member B2 is; lowermost position and the lid C. is:
in closed position against it, the box. will be securely closed and present the sightly appearance usual in boxes of this general character. In order to display the contained article, the lid is first opened to its fullest extent. and the supporting member then lifted sufficiently to permit the lid to be closed under it, and the supporting member is. then tilted. back until it rests against the front wall- 20 of theclosed lid, in. the position shown in. Fig; 2. In this position of the parts, it. Willi be. noted that the article on the display pad 15 is very eifectively displayed while the cover is in horizontal position behind the pad and pad-supporting member, and therefore. does not" obstruct the View of other merchandise: to the rear of the box.
It will further be noted. that the provision of arear sidewall and end walls which are symmetrical in shape and finished to correspond with the front side wall of the supporting. member results in giving a finished appearance to. the box when the supporting member isin display position. On the other hand, when the supporting member is in lower position; inside the .box body and the cover member is open, (see Fig. 5 the container presents the appearance of an ordinary jewelry box, equipped with a display pad: of. usual construction.
