Patented June 14, 1932 UNITED STATES MARGUERITE PHILLIPS, F LANSING, MICHIGAN SANITARY TOILET SEAT PROTECTOR Application filed May 26,
The invention relates to a sanitary toilet seat protector.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, practical and inexpensive sanitary toilet seat protector or cover of ineX- pensive construction adapted to be made of a single sheet of paper and capable of being folded in strip formation and compactly rolled into a package and dispensed in coin controlled machines in lavatories used by the public, whereby infection and spread of dis cases and the like will be prevented.
Heretofore many attempts have been made to produce a sanitary cover for toilet seats in public lavatories as the need of an article of this character has long been recognized. The majority of these attempts have been commercial failures on account of the manner of packaging or dispensing the article, for
instance, the bulk of packages or stacks of fiat sheets renders them inconvenient to handle and to dispose in small space, and the method of using rolls of the same has not been generally adapted on account of waste and 5 expense of maintaining a supply.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a sanitary toilet seat cover adapted to be readily applied to and capable of being securely held in place on a toilet seat and capable of being readily removed therefrom and disposed in a container provided for such purpose with the hands of a person touching only the sanitary cover at the front of the seat.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and set forth in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that changes in form, size, and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claim. may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section showing a sanitary seat cover constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to the toilet seat.
1930. Serial No. 455,738.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a plurality of sanitary toilet seat covers illustrating the man ner of forming the same from a single sheet of paper.
Fig. 3 is a plan view showing one of the sanitary seat covers partially folded.
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the sanitary seat cover completely folded in strip formation.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the sanitary'OO seat cover rolled into a package for dispensing in a coin controlled machine or otherwise.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred form of the inven tion, the sanitary seat cover is constructed of a single sheet of paper or other suitable material and comprises in its construction a main seat cover portion 1 of elliptical form pro'- vided at the center with a substantially elliptical opening 2 and having inner and outer marginal edges 3 and 4: conforming to the configuration of a toilet seat 5. The main seat cover portion 1 is provided at the back with a combined wrapping and attaching tab 6 forming an elongated terminal portion 7 and being substantially the same width as the width of the elliptical opening 2 so that when the seat cover portion 1 is folded longitudinally at opposite sides of the center along the dotted lines a, as illustrated in Figs. 0 3 and 4 of the drawing, the said folded seat cover portion will be of the same width as the tab 6 and provide a strip formation adapted to be readily rolled into a compact package as illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawmg.
The main seat cover portion is provided at the front with an approximately U-shaped flap 7 having inner and outer marginal edges 8 and 9 and conforming to the configuration of the seat 5 when folded beneath the same as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The opening or recess 10 in the front U-shaped flap is of the same width as the opening 2 in the seat cover portion and is of the same width as the tab 6 which is cut from the material of the front flap 7 in the form of the same, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The U-shaped front flap is folded along the said dotted lines a similar to the we seat cover portion, and a strip of uniform width is provided when the parts are folded as illustrated in Fig. 4:.
The tab is of sufficient length to extend completely around. the package one or more times and the rolling of the tab in the package imparts through the resiliency of the material a coil formation when the sanitary seat cover is unrolled which coil formation will enable the tab to be readily placed around the pintle 11 of the hinge of the seat 5, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawing, and this coiling of the tab around the pintle 11 will securely hold the seat cover portion in place at the back of the seat and when the front flap is folded beneath the seat 5, it will be engaged by the rubber cushioning'buttons or pads 12 usually provided at the lower face of hinge seats of this character. Either the pads or direct engagement of the seat with the front flap will firmly hold the same against the bowl at the front thereof. "When removing the sanitary seat cover it is only necessary to pinch or clasp the front portion of the flap between the thumb and fingers and draw the sanitary seat cover from the pintle 11. The covers are designed to be deposited in a container provided for such purpose and it will be apparent that the sanitary seat cover may be applied to a seat and removed therefrom without a person contacting with the seat.
The sanitary seat protector may be stamped or cut from the paper or other suitable material as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the material cut or otherwise severed to form the recess of the U-shaped flap constituting a portion of the rear tab.
WVhat is claimed is A toilet seat protector of paper or analogous sheet material, comprising a main cover portion corresponding to the outline of a toilet seat and its opening, and a tab and U- fiap at opposite ends of the cover portion and projecting outwardly therefrom, with the tab in line with the opening of the said cover portion and U-flap and equal in width to the Width of said openings, the flap conforming to the outline of an end portion of the cover portion to lie snugly thereagainst when tucked thereunder.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
