IMPROVEMENT IN QUILTING-FRAMES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,316, dated January 16, 1877; application filed March 7, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

pivoted together by pivots a at or near their midlength, as shown, so that they may admit of being spread out at bottom and top in form of the letter X, (as in Fig. 1,) or may be folded together nearly flat, so as to occupy but little room when stowed away. The tops of the pieces or standards A givejournal-bearing to the side rollers B B, upon which the quilt is rolled, and so supported. Each roller carries at one end a crank-pulley or disk, D, with a handle, d, by which it is turned. The disks have pin-holes d to receive a pin, 0?,

' which is thrust through the disk, and engages in a hole in the standard A, so as to prevent the disk from turning. E E are stays, each of which is pivoted at one end to a roller, B,

and extends to the standard upon the opposite side, and engages therewith to hold the sides apart. F is a strap of some flexible material attached to the stay, and which overlaps the upper end of the standard and engages on a pin,f, to limit the spread of the top of the frame or stand when adjusting the quilt upon the rollers. [11 place of the strap l! a metallic hook or other suitable fastening may be used. The stays E E have holes 0 for the passage of thread by which the edges of the quilt are made fast to the stays. G G are bars connecting the lower ends of the standards, as shown.

Operation: In quilting, a' portion only of the breadth of the quilt is worked on at one time, the breadth of such part being limited by the reach of the arms of the operative. The whole of the quilt, except that part being operated upon,-is rolled upon the rollers B B, and when this part is completed it is rolled up upon one of the rollers, and afresh portion simultaneously unrolled from the other roller, and the part between the rollers being sufficiently stretched the fastening-pins d are forced in, and the edges are stitched fast to the stays E E.

I claim-- The combination of standards A A A A, rollers B B, stays E E, and crank-disks D, having locking-pins d arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
