It is well known to those skilled in the art that, for sanitary reasons, it is desirable to make pails of a single piece of drawn material so as to do away with sharp corners and the necessity of soldered joints. This is particularly true when such pails are used in dairies. The serious drawback, however, to such a construction is that it is very inconvenient and impractical to handle the pail with a smooth bottom when the contents are to be poured therefrom.
It has been an object of our invention, therefore, to provide a pail made of single piece of materiahso designed that the contents may be easily and conveniently poured therefrom.
Moreover, our pail is provided with two bails, which may be used ineither one of two positions, whereby either side of the pail may be used to pour from.
Furthermore, the bails of our pail are axially movable but fixedly pivoted and so designed that they may be rigidly locked to the pail or loosely pivoted thereto at will.
Moreover, when handling our )pail, the hands may be kept clean and uncontaminated, since the bottom of the pail does not have to be touched when emptying the contents. This is not only desirable for dairy purposes, but
also when handling many liquid chemical products and the like.
The above objects and advantages have been accomplished by the device shown in the accompanying drawing, of which:

Our pail has a body 5 which is made preferably of one piece of material and having a smooth bottom 6, joined to the side walls 7 preferably without sharp corners or soldered joints. At the top of the pail there is profor the bails.

Our pail is provided with two bails 10 and 11 which are secured to the pail by means of tabs 12 and 13. These tabs are riveted to the body of this pail in the customary way. Each of the balls is provided with a pivoted end I l and with alock end 15. The pivot end extends outwardly a considerable distance so that the bail may be moved axially, and this portion is arranged co-incident with the axis of the bail. The lock end has a pivot portion 16, also arranged with its axis coincident with the axis of the bail, and it is joined to the handle portion 17 of the bail with an interspaced return-bend portion 18. It will thus be understood that the bails are pivotally mounted in the tabs so that their axes will be fixed against lateral movement. At the upper end of the return-bend portion is a lock arin portion 19. The extreme inner end of this portion is spaced apart from the adjacent handle portion 17 which is sufiicient to permit the tab to pass through the space.
Each of the tabs 12 and 13 is provided with an aperture for the pivotal connection of the pivot end 14 of the bails. A pivot aperture 26 is also provided in each of the tabs for the pivotal reception of the pivot portion 16 at the lock end of the bail. As shown in the drawing, the tabs are oppositely arranged so that the aperture 25 will come in registration with the pivot end of one of the bails, while the pivot portion 16 at the opposite end of the bail is engaged with the aperture 26. Immediately above the aperture 26, and spaced therefrom a distance equal to the distance between the pivot portion 16 and the lock arm portion 19 of the lock end of the bail is a looking aperture 27 for engagement by the lock arm portion 19 of the bail when in registration therewith, and when the bail is moved axially on its pivots to cause this arm portion to engage with the locking aperture 27. The pivot aperture 26 is arranged near one side edge of the tab, and extending from this edge is an overhanging ledge 28 which is provided with an under surface 29. The locking aperture 27 and ledge 28 therefore form detents This surface is preferably a purpose of slight distance above the top of the pivot aperture 26 as shown in the drawing, and 1S engageable with the lock arm portion 19 of the lock end 15 of the bail when the bail is moved to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 3. The bail is thereafter moved axially upon its pivots so as to cause the lock arm portion thereof to come opposite and in registering position with the surface of the ledge. Due to the relative position of the surface 29, when the lock arm portion 19 comes in contact therewith, the handle portion 17 of the bail will be separated somewhat from the upper rim of the pail, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 andfl. 7
When our pail is to be used, one of the bails, for instance bail 10, is moved to the vertical position shown in Fig. 1 and when the lock arm portion 19 of its lock end 15 is opposite the locking aperture 27 of the tab 12, it is moved axially so as to engage its lock arm portion with the aperture, which serves to prevent the rotation of the bail with respect to the pail. The bail 11 is likewise slid axial- 1y so that its lock arm portion 19 lies beneath the surface 29, whereby it also is prevented from relative rotation with the pail when it is grasped by the hand. When now the contents of the pail are to be emptied, the bail 10 is used as a fulcrum while the operator lifts and turns the pail in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1 by means of the bail 11; Due to the rigid, locked connection of the bails to the pail body, it is obvious that the pail may be conveniently and effectively manipulated to empty its contents without having to touch the body of the pail.
If it isdesired to use the bail 11 as a fulcrum, both bails may be released from their locking engagement with the pail, and each of them moved to the desired position where they may be locked, as above pointed out.
Obviously, if desired, but one bail may be provided to be used as a fulcrum, while a handle fixed to the pail at some piace on its "side may be used to tip the pail to itsemptying position.
This and other modifications of the details herein shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention or the scope of the appended claims, and we do not, therefore, wish to be limited to the exact embodiment herein shown and described, the form shown being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is 1. As an article of manufacture, a pail having bail tabs, an axially movable bail pivotally carried by the tabs, each tab being formed with a locking aperture and with an overhanging ledge, the ledges being o'ppo- 'sitel'y arranged, and means carried by the bails and engag'eable wits. the locking aper tures and overhanging ledges for locking the bails in position.
2. As an article of manufacture, a pail having bail tabs, axially movable bails pivotally carried by the tabs, each tab being formed with a locking aperture and with an overhanging ledge, the ledges being oppositely arranged, and each bail having a lock arm portion engageable with the locking aperture or the overhanging ledge for looking the bails in position.
3. As an article of manufacture, a pail having bail tabs, an axially movable bail pivotally carried by the tabs, each tab being formed with a locking aperture and with an overhanging ledge, the ledges being oppositely arranged, and each bail having a lock arm portion in intersbaced relation therewith and engageable with the locking aperture or the overhanging ledge for locking the bails in position.

As an article of manufacture, a pail having bail tabs, an axially movable bail pivoted in the tabs and having its axis fixed against lateral movement, each tab being formed with a locking aperture and with an overhanging ledge, the ledges being oppositely arranged, and means carried by the bails and engageable with the locking ap'e'r tures and overhanging ledges for locking the as bails in position.

axially movable bail pivotally carried by the tabs, and means carried by the bail and engageable withthe detent means of the bail tab for locking the bail in a number of posit-io'ns.
6. As an article of manufacture, a pail having bail tabs, one of the tabs being formed with a number of 'separ'ate tletent means, a
bail pivotally carried in the tabs and so mounted that itwill have longitudinal axial movement but have its axis fixed against lateral movement, and means carried by the bail and engageable with the 'det'ent means of the bail tab for locking the bail in a number of positions.
7. As an article of manufacture, a pail having bail tabs, such tabs being provided with a number of bail detents, two bails carried by the tabs, each bail being axially movable and having-its axis fixed against lateral movement, and means formed on the J bails and engageable with the detents on the 7 tabs and lockingly hol'din'geach bail in one oftwo positions.
