Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL WOOLVERTO, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROV-EMENT IN TOOTH-BRUSHES.
Specification forming part ofLetters Patent No. 186,287, dated January 16,1877; application filed August 15, 1876.
l holder, having a toothbrush secured therein ready for use;` and Fig. 2, a similar view of the holder without the brush, showing the adjusting-screw turned back upon its thread as far as it is capable of being turned.
rlhe object of my invention is to furnish a holder for brushes, especially the smaller varieties, such as tooth and nailbrushes, which shall admitof the same being readily attached and detached, so that larger or smaller brushes, or brushes with bristles of different degrees of stiffness, or brushes for diierent purposes,
` may be used interchangeably on the same handle, as occasion may require.
The invention consists in providingfan ordinary bone, ivory, hard-rubber, or wooden handle with a suitable metallic brush-reeepta cle, and an adjusting-clamp andthumb-screw, the whole constructed and arranged as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, A represents the handle of wood, bone, ivory, or hard rubber; and B, the `metallic extension for the reception of the brush.
This brush-receptacle, which is shaped like the ordinary tooth or nail brush, may be ornamented on its under side, and made round-- It 1s secured to the handle in any well-known manner, and it carries upon the circular projection, which is -tted to or into said handle, a screw-thread,
U, over which works the thumbscrew D. Said thumb-screw, as it is adjusted toward the brush E, lying in its receptacle, comes in contact with the adjustingclarnp G, which is provided with the shank a, which latter, when moved snugly up against the shoulders b, formed upon the brush-receptacle B, fits over the lower end of the brush, while the upper end thereof is securely held in the raised semicircular projection c, formed on the forward end ot' said brush-receptacle.
To remove the brush E, to enable its being cleansed or replaced by another, it is obvious that it is simply necessary to turn back the thumbscrew D, and move the clamp E back from its bearings.
By this finvention I produce a brush-holder simple in construction and at a very small cost.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. 1n a brush-holder, the brush-receptacle B, having the screw-thread C upon an extension of one end, and the raised semicircular projection c upon the other, thumb-screw D, and adjusting-clamp G, in combination with the handle A and brush E, substantially as specified.
2. A brush-holder consisting of the receptacle B, screw-th read C, thumb-screw D, clamp G, and raised semicircular projection c, substantially as shown and described.
