SHIPPING AND DISPLAY CARTON Filed July 16, 1950 2 Sheets-Sheet l INVENTOR Fran/r flew/1am June 14, 1932. F. KENNET'f SHIPPING AND DISPLAY CARTON 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed July 16,
Patented June 14, 1932 UNITED STATES FRANK KENNETT, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN i SHIPPING AND DISPLAY CARTON Application filed July 16, 1930. Serial No. 468,225.
The main object of this invention is to provide a combined shipping and display carton for various classes of merchandise which is well adapted as a shipping carton or [Blcontainer and may be readily adjusted as a display carton, the merchandise being easily removed therefrom.
A further object is to provide a structure 7 having these advantages which may be readi- .10 ly formed of an integral blank and one whlch is easily set up.
A still further object is to provide a strucure having these advantages which is very attractive in appearance when adjusted as a "1 display container.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
90 A structure which embodies the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a bottom perspective view of my improved carton closed or adjusted as a ship- 95 ping carton or container.
Fig. 2 is a front perspective view when adj usted as a display carton.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section on line 33 of Fig. 2 showing details of the relation of parts when adjusted as a display carton.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary bottom perspective view of the carton as adjusted for display purposes.
Fig. 5 is a vertical section from front to rear on a line corresponding to line 55 of Fig. 2, packages of merchandise being indicated by dotted lines and one package being partially ejected.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank.
My improved carton comprises a front wall 1, rear wall 2, end walls 3 and a bottom designated generally by the numeral 4.
The front wall 1 is provided with a closing flap 5scored at 6 to provide a tuck-in securing extension, the end walls 3 having inner top flaps 7 These top flaps are folded inwardly and the outer top flap 5 is folded over them and the tuck-in extension 8 inserted between the rear edges of the flap 7 and therear wall as indicated in Fig. 5.
The bottom 4 is made up of the inner bottom flap 9, the intermediate bottom flaps 10, and the outer bottom flap 11. The flap 9 is an extension of the front wall 1, and the flaps 10 are an extension of the end walls .3 and the flap 11 an extension of the rear wall.
The rear wall has a sealing flap 12 which is folded on the inner side of the remote side wall 3 and glued thereto.
The front wall has a discharge opening 13 extending across the bottom thereof, there being segmental notches 1 1 in the end walls registering with this opening. This opening is formed by cutting out a portion of the end wall as indicated in Fig. 6. This cut-out portion constitutes a flap-like member 15 extending from the forward edge of the bottom. This member is adapted to be adjusted to close the discharge opening or to be adjusted as a support for the carton. The portions cut out to form the notches 14: form end extensions 16 on this combined closure member and support.
The member 15 is scored longitudinally at 17 so that it may be folded longitudinally upon itself to a V shape or V cross section as shown in Fig. 2 with the extensions 16 folded Iionwardly to provide tongue-engaging memers.
The outer edge of the bottom flap 11 is formed to provide a pair of outer tongues 18 and an intermediate T-shaped tongue 19. These outer tongues 18 are engaged with the members 16 while the tongue 19 is engaged in a slit 20 formed in the member 15, thus effectively retaining the member 15 in its supporting position so that the container is supported in a rearwardly inclined position on the rear edge of its bottom and on this support.
The rear wall of the container is provided with a horizontal series of openings 21 through which the finger may be introduced to eject a package of merchandise indicated at 22.
The particular package illustrated is designed as a carton for golf balls, which are usually sold in packages containing three golf balls. The particular carton is adapted as a package for four dozen balls.
When a sale is made the salesman partially ejects one of the packages 22 by pushing from the rear through an opening 21. The package is then drawn out from the front allowing the superimposed packages to drop into display position and in position to be conveniently ejected.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in a very practical embodiment or adaptation thereof in which the structure is formed from an integral blank. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain modifications and adaptations which I contemplate as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1 A display carton comprising front, rear, end and bottom walls and top closing flaps, the front wall having a discharge opening extending horizontally across the bottom thereof, the end walls having segmental notches at the ends of said discharge opening, the rear wall having a horizontal series of finger openings opposite said discharge opening, and a flap-like combined support and discharge opening closure member on the front edge of the bottom adaptedto be adjusted as a closure for said discharge opening and having segmental end extensions constituting closures for said notches in said end 'valls, said member having a tongue slit therein and being longitudinally scored so that it may be folded into a V cross section and ad justed under the bottom as a support with said extensions folded inwardly to provide tongue-engaging members, said bottom having forwardly projecting outer and intermediate tongues, the outer tongues being engageable within said member and said tongue-en gaging members and the intermediate tongue being engageable on the outside of said member and through said slit therein.
