BOOKMARK Application filed'fictober 19, 1931. .Serial No. 569,685.
My invention relates to an improved book mark, and is particularly directed to the type of book marks which are supported by the book cover.
One of the objects of my invention is the provision of a device of the character indicated which is relatively inexpensive and which may be applied to books varying in thickness throughout a wide range, the device being exceedingly simple in construction and operation as well as in its mode of at tachment to a book so as to adapt the same for use by the ordinary user.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a device of the character indicated which, in so far as its use as a book mark is concerned, is semi-automatic in operation and permits of the book being opened and the pages turned with as little effort as when the device is not in use.
I am aware that attachments have been devised heretofore in the nature of devices functioning as a book mark, but in such devices it is customary to provide spring arms which overlie the leaves of the book and when it is desired to turn a leaf the arms must be first lifted up or moved to one side, as the case may be, to permit the leaf to be turned. Such devices usually require the use of two hands in turning a leaf, whereas, as will be brought out hereinafter, my attachment is of such construction and arrangement that the leaf can be turned in a natural manner.
In addition to all the foregoing the marker of the present invention does not require the use of resilient material, the resiliency or elasticity of the mark or marker not being relied upon in holding a leaf in place or permitting the leaf to be turned.
in the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view in perspective of a device embodying my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the said device.
Referring to the drawings in detail 13 designates an upright equipped at its lower end with spring fingers 145 and 15 adapted to be slipped over the lower cover of a book to retain the device in place. The resiliency of the fingers 14- and 15, as will be understood, is suflicient frictionally to hold the device to the book cover. In the upri ht 18 1 provide a vertically extending slot 16.
17 designates a book mark or marker which I prefer to make of a light material such as celluloid, for example, although other materials may be employed if desired, this marker being provided with transverse slots 18 and 19 separated by an intermediate portion 20 integral with the main part or body of the marker. This integral intermediate portion 20 is received by the slot 16 in the upright.
The body portion of the marker is of reduced width so as to provide lateral extensions 21 and 22 adjacent its outer end, and I slit the marker, as shown at 23 and 2 1, longitudinally of the marker, these slits intercept ing the slots 18 and 19. This permits of the application of the marker to the upright- 13 by turning the marker on edge and then inserting the end of the marker into the slot 16. The marker is then turned down into the position of Fig. '1 by passing the portion 25 of the upright 13 through the slit 23 and into the slot 18 and the portion 26 of the upright through the slit 24c and into the slot 19.
In use my attachment is slipped over the book cover, the resiliency of fingers 1 1 and 15 holding it in position. The mark or marker 17 will of course be upon the leaf at which the book is opened. When the leaf is to be turned, this is done in the usual and natural way, the loose fit of the mark or marker 17 permitting the same to move upwardly until the leaf can be turned, whereupon the marker slides downwardly by gravity upon the face of the next leaf.
It will be appreciated, therefore, that in turning a leaf of the book no more effort is required nor any different procedure than when my device is not in place. Of course in closing the book the marker 17 is left in place in the usual way until the book is again used.
It will be seen from the foregoing that my attachment is simple in construction and operation. and permits of a leaf being turned in a natural manner and without necessitating the use of resilient material, the marker simply returning to position by gravity each time a leaf is turned.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the details of construction above described within the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim is 1. An article of the class described com prising in combination an upright, means for frictionally holding the upright removably attached to a book cover, said upright being provided with a slot extending lengthwise thereof, a book mark, said book mark being provided with two slots therethrough extending transversely thereof, the slots receiving the sides of the upright at each side of the slot in the upright, the intermediate portion of the mark being received by the slot in the upright, and said mark being provided with a slit at each side thereof, open at their outer ends and intercepting the said slots in the mark to permit of the adjustable mounting of the mark on the upright.
2. An article of the class described comprising in combination an upright, resilient means for frictionally holding the upright removably attached to a book cover, said upright being provided with a slot extending lengthwise thereof, a book mark, said book mark being provided with an integral connecting portion extending through said slot and loosely holding the book mark attached to the upright so that the book mark may be raised on said upright by the turning of a page in the book and lowered by gravity.
3. An article of the class described comprising in combination an upright, resilient means for frictionally holding the upright removably attached to the book cover, said upright being provided with a longitudinal slot, a book mark, said book mark being provided with lateral extensions adjacent one end thereof, said extensions projecting through said slot and loosely engaging said upright.
4-. An article of the class described comprising in combination an upright, means for frictionally holding the upright removably attached to a book cover, said upright being provided with a slot extending lengthwise thereof, a book mark, the body portion of said book mark being reduced in width adjacent one end thereof to provide an intermediate portion to loosely fit in the slot of said upright, and lateral extensions carried by said intermediate portion for loosely engaging said upright.
This specification signed this 17 day of October, 1931.
