This invention relates to improvements in fuel burners for use in furnaces or the like to increase the combustion of the fuel and heating capacity of the furnace, and in raising steam in stationary, marine and other boilers by an attachment thereto as for instance described in my Patent No. 1,746,061, dated February 4th, 1930, of which this application is a continuation in part. f
It is the principal object of this'invention to provide a cone attachment equipped with a Vplurality of deflector vanes of a new and improved construction constituting means to present re- -i5 sistance to the air forced through the cone casing by the motor driven multior Sblade aeroplane type fan at a point before the air reaches the deflector vanes, and thereby creating an air pressure within the cone cas- 2o ing constituting the means for building up air cross currents through the center deiiector ring and deector varies. The cone casing is so formed at the large end where the fan is-attached to cause a free discharge of air into the same and provide means for the fan to cause a suction on the outside and producing an air pressure within the cone casing.
Thus a maximum of heat by a minimum consumption of fuel, such as for instance oil under pressure, forced through a burner, is produced, by mixing the fuel with air under pressure produced by the motor driven aeroplane type fan.
Another ob] ect`of my invention is the provision of a furnace attachment of the abovev type of comparatively simple construction yet durable and efiicient in its operation for the. purpose in view, an attachment which will greatly reduce the cost of repairing and of replacements for worn parts, as each part of the attachment is interchangeable and portable.
v Still another object of my invention is the provision of a furnace or boiler attachment adapted to size of furnaces or boilers of the conventional constructions, without the necessity of materially changing the furnace or boiler construction, and in which the air and fuel are shaped furnace or boilerbe readily attached to any imparted a whirling motion ensuring a nearly perfect combustion.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a furnace or boiler-attachment equipped with a regulator shutter plate provided With openings and movable shutter sections enabling the use of the attachment on a furnace or boiler, operated in a closed compartment or fireroom under constant air pressure.
A. still further object of my invention is the provision of a furnace or boiler attachment equipped with a center defiector ring for the purpose of forming a cross-current of air, and changing the angle of oil film spray deflection to a lesser or greater degree, as desired, thereby also imparting a whirling motion to the air and oil film spray.
The invention includes also the provision of a drip trough formed with the center deflector ring or body and means for guiding the drip oil to prevent the combustion of the same and the formation of dangerous ases.
It is also the object of the present invention to provide a safety screen for the fan which is preferably of the multi-vane or blade type and constructedy for producing air pressure and adapted to be operated with variations in speed so as to produce the necessary quantity of air required and in proportional relation to the amount of fuel oil to be burned. The fan is of the multior 8 blade airplane type with set pitch of blades and clearance to produce air pressure in a conical casing and having said air pressure develop force of motion for the additional deflection of cross-currents and revolving motion. These and other objects and advantages of my invention will become more fully known asl the description thereof proceeds and will then be specically defined in the appended claims.

As illustrated, my improved and novel furnace attachment comprises a substantially cone-shaped casing or casting 10 having an end flange 11 by means of which the device is adapted to be attached to a furnace or boiler front indicated at 12.

A shutter plate 15 having a handle 16 formed therewith is portable and can be suitably attached at the large end of the casing 10 as for instance by inserting it between an angle ring 46 and the large end of cone casing 10, and has formed therewith a substantially V-shaped ring 1 8 adapted to engage a similarly shaped depression or groove in an asbestos packing 19 embedded in the large end of the casing 10 of the furnace attachment.
A bracket 20 is attached on the three lugs 22 inside of casing 10.
A yoke 23 constituting a holder for an oil burner body 24, and parts associated therewith, has at its inner apex a perforated boss 25 which is equipped with inner thread allowing the passage of a screw bolt 26 which carries at its outer end a hand wheel 27, while itsl inner pointed end engages the burner body 24. v
To the inner end of the yoke a two armed bracket 28 is secured by means of bolts and nuts 29 carrying suitable washers, while the outer ends of the bracket arms are slotted, as at 30, to allow the securing of the yoke and burner therein to the bracket 20 by means of screws 31 carrying wing nuts 32 and encased in oil tight copper packing ring 33 so that the burner and its holder yoke can easily be taken apart and removed as a complete unit from the interior of casing 10 of the attachment.
The oil is supplied under pressure to the burner body by means of the oil supply pipe 34 and is fed to a pipe 36 equipped at its furnace end with a nozzle or tip of conventional type, as for instance described and shown in y.

In order to form a cross-current of air and for the purpose of changing the angle of oil film spray deflection to a lesser or greater degee, as desired, I provide the following mechanism:
A center delector ring 56 is supported by guide bars depending from bracket 20 carrying intermediate their ends bosses 49 secured to bar 50 by means of dowel pins 51. Internal operating levers 48 are pivotally set at their bottom ends, as at 48 between bosses 51 while their upper ends are secured to an operating shaft 52 by means of dowel pins 55 which is movab y arranged in, bearing bosses 47.
The center delector ring 56 has formed integrally therewith three rings 57, 58 and 59 ofl different diameters and of predetermined angles and shape, and the estimated set position of each ring ahead of each other relative to the increase of diameter is operative l in order to ensure the proper courses of the air currents to form the required spray angle and for imparting to the air and oil film spray its proper 'whirling motion. The rings 57, 58, and 59 as part of the center deector ring are properly guided in guides 60, 61, 62 and 63 (Fig. 5) while bosses 64 as part of the center delector ring receives the threaded ends of the guide bars 50.
Figure 2 illustrates the construction andy arrangement of the outer lever and co-operating parts. The shaft 52 of the inner operating lever 48 carries outside of casing 10 a lever 66 similar to inner lever 48 pivotally connected at its outer end, as at 65 to an operating lever 69 adj ustably guided in an angle clip 70, and provided with a lower end han Figure 3 illustrates in detail view the shutter plate 15 with its handle 16 composed of an upper or outer plate 72 and an inner or lower plate 73. The outer plate has curved peripheral slotsv 74 formed therein in which are guided buttons 75 of the inner plate to allow an adjustment of the shutters 76 'to vary the size of the slots between them.

An oil overflow receiving vessel is desi nated 71 in Figures 1 and 11. The' troug arrangement 71 is casted 4with and forms part of the movable center deector ring 56 and provides means for collecting dripping oil when the burner is not in operation and in the event Vthat the valve controlling the oil flow to the burner is not properly closed or leaks. Thus this trough and the pipe 84 leading therefrom to the outlet nozzle 86 constitutes a safety device preventing the leak oil from entering the furnace unburned, and also from leaking down between the brickwork of the furnace wall and furnace casing which will eliminate the danger of combustible gases being formed in other places than the furnace combustion chamber. Figures 6 and 7 illustrate the construction of the upper rim or margin of receptacle or casing 10.
As shown in these figures, the angle ring 46 forms the means of support of brackets 43, motor 42 and fan 45 and is held in closed position by a spring snap lock 67 engaging `a shoulder or block attached to the outside of casing 1,0. Pivot 72 allows swinging of the angle ring on the opposite side of the casing 10.
As shown in these figures the inner faces of the upper rim of casing 10 are stream-line asvshown in Figures 1, 6, and 7 in order to cause or allow a free discharge of air into the cone casing so as to provide means for allowing the fan to cause a suction on the outside of the casing and to produce an air pressure within the cone casing.
The operation ofv my attachment will be clearly understood from the above description on hand of the accompanying drawings, and it will be clear that the arrangement of the protecting screen for the fan will prevent injury to the operator while the screen attached to the angle ring 46 may'easily be swung about its pivot 46 after release of the catch to give access to the motor and shaft for lubrication, clearing and repairs.
The stream-line form of the upper conecasing margin will allow a free discharge of air into the casing and cause a suction on the outside for producing an air pressure within the casing.
The center deflector ring 56 with its three auxiliary deflector rings or vanes, of different diameters will receive the air under pressure for the purpose of producing cross-currents of air and for changing thereby the angle of oil film spray deflection to a lesser as desired, and'effected by the proper ad]ustment of the angle of the pivoted lever or levers 48, 66, by means of the outer operating lever effecting a moving of the center deilector ring inwardly or outwardly and thereby causing a change in the angle of air cross-currents and thus changin also the angle of the oil film spray deflecte to-a lesser or greater degree as desired.

frusto-conically shaped casing, 'means in said Casin for forming a cross-currentof air and for c anging the angle of an oil lm pray, said means comprising a center deector ring, a plurality of rings of diii'erent diameters and predetermined angles and shapes integrally made with saidv center ring, guides for guiding said rings, a guide bar for the center ring, bosses on said guide bar spaced from one another, inner operating levers having inner headed ends set in the space between said bosses, a shaft to which the other ends of said inner operating levers are secured, an outer lever arm secured at one end to said shaft, and anA outer operating lever pivotally attached at its upper end to the opposite endV of said outer lever arm for adjusting the p0- sition of said deflecting rings to produce the desired deflection of air and oil film.
