Serial No. 8283M Our invention relates to die heads, and particularly to such die heads as are used on machines for cutting threads on bolts, screws, pipe, etc., using well-known tangential e'nd sharpened chasers.
An object of the invention is to provide a o'unit die head in which the front unit carries the cutters for producing, the screw threads, and the rear unit constitutes the holding or driving unit; and to provide means whereby the front unit may float relative to the rear or holding and driving unit; and to provide further that the locking and driving members shall be independent of each other.
A further object is to provide a die head in which a floating action is secured to the locking and closing members, and in which the locking members are contained in the floating unit and are not influenced by the holding or driving unit.
A further object of the invention is to provide a die head wherein the locking means is permitted to float with the thread cutting carrying means, and whereby the thread cutting carrying means and locking means are permittcd to float relative to the die head holding shank.
A further object of the invention-is to provide a die head having a floating front unit in which the locking mechanism is unaffected by the floating of the front unit.
A further object of the invention is to provide a die head composed of two units in which the front unit is driven by pins on the rear unit, so that the driving or resultant forces are carried by the pins instcad of by the closing and locking means.
In constructions heretofore used, the locking pins bore the resultant forces of the cut-1 ters, such constructions being shown and described for example in Patent #1,631,556,.

In constructions heretofore used, as in application of Harry T. Shearer, Serial No. 597,199, filed October 26, 1922, the resultant forces of the cutters are carried by the trunnions and the worm connected to the drivingshank or bod whereas in this construction the resultant orces are carried by pins in the holding or driving unit which are independent of the trunnions, locking pins or worms and at the same time allows the opening act1on of the head to be pull-off type or selfcontained without relying on mechanical means. such as spiders, yokes, cams, etc.
'Furthe'r general objects are to provide a die head in which the cutting and locking members float relative to the driving shank or the driving member, and wherein misalignment of the work will not affect the locking means. 7
A further object is to provide a die head in which the resultant forces of cutting threads do not act through the lockin means to the holding shank or driving member.
A still further object is to provide a die head employing tangential chasers and trunnions mounted in a body carrying the same, In which the unit carrying the cutting members ahgns itself with the stock being cut,
. which stock can be eccentric with the shank or driving member without causing a rocking action upon the locking pins.
A further object of the invention is to provide a die head having a pull-off or separat-I ing action between front and rear units for opening the head in combination with conical closing pins and have the front and rear units maintain their separate positions until the front unit is again acted upon by the conical ins.

In the drawings, numerals 20 indicates the body member of the front unit of a die head having an opening ring 21 surrounding the front end, and an ad usting ring 22 surrounding the head body member just to the rear of the opening ring. The body member has a flange 23 made integral therewith, for holding the opening ring from forward movement on the head body. A ring plate 24 is secured on the rear face of the front unit 20. Chaser holders 25 carrying tangential chasers 26 are mounted upon trunnions positioned in bores in the front head body member 20 and pivotally connected to the opening ring 21 so that relative rotation of the opening ring and the front head body member will open and close the thread cutting jaws or chasers. The opening ring 21 is provided with cavities in which are seated hardened bushings 27 and 27. The trunnions on the chaser holders pass through the rear ring plate 24 and are secured by means of nuts 28 and lock nuts 29 having a conical end which seats in a corresponding conical cavity in an end of the trunnion.
The rear unit of the head body comprises a rear body member 30 having a rear flange portion 31. Surrounding the rear body memher are rings 32 and 33. The locking ring 32 carries blunt end locking pins 34 secured therein, which pins pass through bores in the adjusting ring 22 and seat in the bushings 27' in the opening ring to hold this ring in locked thread cutting position. The closing ring 33 has pins 35 secured therein, which pins have conical ends 36 which engage in hardened bushings 27 in the opening ring. The pins 34 and 35 are so positioned with respect to their respective bushings in the opening ring 21 that the conical pointed pins 35 will rotate the opening ring to such position that pins 34 assume a position relative to bushings 27 as shown in Figures 11 and 12 and the withdrawal of pins 35 from their bushings 27 permits the opening ring 21 to assume its locked position as shown in Figures 3 and 4. When the front body member is pulled forward to allow the cutters to open the forward ends of the blunt end pins 34 rest against the rear face of the opening ring to hold the opening ring in fixed open position relative to the driving member. A ring plate 37 is secured on the front end of the rear body member. The ring plates 24 and 37 surround a small extension 38 on the rear of the front body member 20. Screws 39 are secured in the rear of the front body member 20 and positioned in bores of the rear body member 30. Compression springs 40 surrounding these pins are positioned between the head 39 of the pins 39 and the bottom 30 of the bore in the rear body member 30. These springs tend to hold the body members together. In order to permit the front body member together with the opening ring and the adjusting ring surrounding this body member and the closing ring and the locking ring surrounding the rear body member, to have a floating action relative to the rear unit, we provide clearances at 41, 42, 43, 44, and 44". The rings 32 and 33 are provided with cavities 45 and 46, respectively, in which are seated compression springs 47. These springs tend to urge the rings apart. The rings 32 and 33 are limited in their lateral movement by the ring plate 37 and'the flange 31. In order to operate the closing ring 33 we may provide a roller 48 upon some member 49 on a screw threading machine, which roller 48 will strike against the flange 50 on the ring 33 and force it forward, causing the conical points 36 to engage the sides of the bevel 27 of bushings 27. The said bushings 27 are out of alignment with the closing pins 35 when the die head is open. Forward movement of the conical pointed pins 35 will rotate the ring 21 until the locking pins 34 are seated in their corresponding bushings in the opening ring 21 as described above. The ring 22 is adjusted around the head body member 20 by means of a screw 51 which is the same as the structure shown in the patents above referred to. The opening ring 21 is moved to open position by well known means such as that shown in the patents above referred to and as shown in Figure 2.
Driving contact between the rear body member 30 and the front body member 20 is made by pins 52 which are fixed in the rear body member and extend into bores in the front body member with clearance 44.
While we have shown means for closing the head by moving the ring 33 forward to cause the conical ends of the pins 35 to rotate the ring 21 with respect to the ring 22, we do not limit ourselves to this method of closing the die head to cutting position. Instead of this automatic device for closing the head, we may provide the ring 21 with a. handle by means of which it may be manually rotated so that the lockin g pins 34 will seat in the proper bores in the openin ring.
' Means are provi ed to hold the front unit of the die head in a fixed position while the head is being closed by the action of closing pins 35. This is accomplished by stop screws 39 in conjunction with shoulder 39 of bores in rear body member 30, the distance from under the "head 39 to end of body 39 of screw 39 is such that when 36 is engaged on bevel 27 of bushing 27 in the act of closing die head it will force front unit forward until 39 makes contact at 39 preventing further forward movement of front unit; the closing pins 35 being of such length, that as they continue in their forward motion their conical ends 36 will rotate ring 21 until pins 34 assume a position relative to bushing 27, as shown in Figures 11 andl2, and the wlthdrawal of pins-35 from their bushings 27 permits the opening ring 21 to assume its locked position as shown in Figures 3 and 4.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in our device without departing from the spirit of the invention, and we therefore do not limit ourselves to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification, but only as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described our said invention. what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A die head comprising a body member, trunnions mounted in the body member, chaser holders mounted on the trunnions, tangential chasers in the holders, a plurality ofrings surrounding the said body member, one of said rings be'ingconnected to the said chaser holders, means in said rings for openin g and adjusting the die head, the said rings being positioned. laterally of said body member by a flange on the body member, and a ring plate attached to the said body member, a ring carrying locking pins connected to the said plurality of rings and rotatable about the body member with said plurality of rings, said ring being positioned on ashank slidably connected to said body member, the said ring being limited in its axial movement relative to said shank for locking the die head and pins mounted in the said shank for driving the said body member, substantially as set forth.
2. A die head comprising a two unit head body member, the front [unit carrying openmg and ad usting rings and the rear unit carrying locking and closing rings, plns on the locking ring of the rear unit and pins on the closing ring of therear unit, the said last named pins having tapered points which seat in bushings in the opening ring, whereby forward movement of the closing ring will rotate the opening ring to a. position whereby the locking pins on the lockingring will semember, the said closing ring having .closing pins extending throughthe said locking ring and into bores in the opening ring, the said pins having tapered points which rotate the opening ring to a position wherein it is locked in thread cutting position by the pins on the locking ring whereby the forces resulting from thread cutting operations act through the locking means instead of through the closing means to the head holding shank or driving member, substantially as set forth.
4. A thread cutting die head comprising a front unit and a rear unit, the front unit carrying opening and adjusting rings and chaser holders carrying thread cutting chasers mounted thereon, the rear unit carrying locking and closing rings with locking and closing pins secured therein, there being clearances provided between the said locking and closing rings and the rear body member whereby the front unit may have a floating action to care for misalignment of Work without affecting the position of the rear body member and without affecting the rela tive position of the opening and the locking rings, substantially as set forth.
5. 7 A die head comprising a head body, a driving member, an opening ring, an adjusting ring, a locking ring, a closing ring, means comprising conical pins mounted in the closing ring for closing the head, means comprising blunt end pins mounted in the locking ring for locking the head in closed position and means comprising springs mounted between said locking ring and said closing ring for withdrawing said conical pins from closed position, substantially as set forth.
8. A die head comprising a head body, a driving, member, an opening ring, an adjusting ring, a locking ring, a closing ring, means comprising conical pins mounted in the closing ring for closing the head, means comprising blunt end pins mounted in the locking ring forlocking the head in closed position and means comprising pins mounted 1n the driving member for driving said head body and said rings during thread cutting 5 operation, substantlally as set forth.

A die head comprising a head body, a driving member, an opening ring, an adjusting ring, a locking ring, a closing ring, means comprising conical pins mounted in the closing ring for closing the head, means comprising blunt end pins mounted in the locking ring for locking the head in closed position and means for maintaining the opening ring and the adjusting ring in fixed lateral relation to said head body and means for maintaining the locking ring and the closing ring in fixed lateral relations to said driving member, substantially as set forth.
10. A die head comprising a head body,
a driving member, an opening ring, an adjusting ring, a locking ring, a closing ring, means comprising conical pins mounted in the closing ring for closing the head, means comprising blunt end pins mounted in the looking ring for locking the head in closed position andmeans to limit the lateral movement of the locking ring in relation to the driving member to open the die head, substantially as set forth.
11. A die head having a two unit head .body member, the front unit carrying opening and adjusting rings and the rear unit carrying locking and closing rings, said closing ring carrying conical pointed pins engageable in sockets in the opening ring for moving said opening ring to close the die head, clearances being provided between said locking and closing rings and said rear unit, pins mounted in said rear unit registering with recesses in the front unit, tapered clearances beingprovided about said pins in said recesses whereby the front unit and its opening and adjusting rings with said locking and closing rings are permitted to float relative to the rear unit, substantially as set forth;
