Description
Patented May 31, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RICHARD PASTERNAGK, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES PFIZER & COMPANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW-JERSEY DEN'IIFRICE Io Drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in dentifrices and more particularly to the base used in such dentifrices.
Anobject of this invention is to provide a dentifrice having a base possessing the advantageous properties of the bases heretofore known and, furthermore, being more palatable than the heretofore known bases.
A further object is to provide a dentifrice having a base which is peculiarly adapted not to irritate the gums.
A still furtherobject is to provide a tooth paste in which the solid and liquid ingredients will remain in a homogeneous mixture after being filled into tubes.
An acce table base must assist in the mechanical c eansing action of the tooth brush without causing undesirable abrasion of theteeth, and must be compatible with various chemicals used in dentifrices for maintaining the teeth and gums in a healthy condition, such as weak acids, mild astringents, deodorants and disinfectants.
Substances such as calcium carbonate and phosphate, magnesium carbonate and hydroxide, are not entirely satisfactory, as they leavedisagreeable chalky after-taste in of tooth pastes employing these the mouth and because of relative insolubility tend to irritate the gums and leave fine partlcles lodged in the gums.
- Another objection to bases heretofore known is that the solid and liquid ingredients bases have a tendency to separate on storin this tendency being particularly noticeab e with considerable changes in temperature.
The present mvention lies in the discovery that salts of gluconic acid are well suited for use as the base for dentifrices,'having properties materially more favorable for such use than the substances heretofore used. Of these salts of gluconic acid, the calcium and magnesium gluconates are preferred. 7
These gluconates are distinguishedv from bases heretofore known in that they leave no chalky after-taste, and due to their relatively great solubility in water, calcium glu- 9 particleso'fthe same can and magnesium-glubody temperature, be completely reconate being about 3% conate being about 16% at Application filed December 20, 1929. Serial No. 415,611.
moved from the mouth by rinsing with water, thereby eliminating an tendenc to irritate the gums; Because of the big solubility of magnesium gluconate, a dentifrice. containing the same is of great value to persons with tender gums. -For such gums, a polishing agent whose particles dissolve very quickly is ,desirable. Furthermore, these salts have a mild cleansing action without undesirable abrasion of the teeth, and are not affected by the various chemicals. used in. dentifrices. e
These gluconates are further distinguished from bases heretofore known in that the form with the liquid ingredients of a tooth paste, a homogeneous mixture which shows no tendency to separate into its component parts. ly-used binders such as gums are omitted from the mixture. This desirable property of these gluconat'es is due to their peculiar crystalline structure which is such that liquids are readily absorbed and the mixture becomes plastic similar to mixtures of clay and liquids.
To illustrate the invention, the following examples of dentifrices are given, parts by weight, but it is to be understood that the irivention is not restricted to these examp es E wample I. The following is a composition of a tooth paste embodying the invention:
Ewwmple II. A tooth powder composition embodying this invention is as follows:
Calcium gluconate 100 parts Magnesium peroxide 2 parts Flavoring to suit Example I I I A second tooth powder composition embodying this invent on is as follows:
Calcium gluconate Zinc citrate 1 part Flavoring to suit This is true even Where the commonparts Magnesium gluconate can be substituted for the calcium gluconate in the above examples without otherwise changing the composition.
The invention claimed is:
- 1. A dentifrice comprising a cleansing and polishing agent consisting of a member selected from the group consisting of calcium gluconate and magnesium gluconate.
2. A dentifrice comprisinga cleansing and polishing agent consisting of calcium gluconate.
3. A dentifrice comprising a cleansing and polishing agent consisting of magnesium gluconate.
4. A dentifrice comprising from to 98% calcium luconate.
Signe at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, this 17th day of December, A. D. 1929.
RICHARD PASTERNAOK.
