Patented Feb. 19, 192%.
UNITE @ii 'l lltfiE.
JOHN P. SHEPHERD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOE, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO SHEPHERD CHEMICAL COMPANY, A. CORPORATION OF ILLI'NGIS.
TOOTH PASTE.
1V0 Drawing.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN P. SHEPHERD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cool: and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Tooth Paste; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to tooth pastes and has for its object the provision of a toothpaste which possesses not only a mild abrasive and (or) detergent action but also antiseptic properties.
For this purpose free iodine may be used to advantage on account of its strong antiseptic action. In some cases cholesterin may be employed to aid in the absorption of the iodine by the gums and portions of the teeth though this is notessential. Usually 1 to 3% of free iodine will give the action desired.
The paste may be given mechanical cleaning properties by the use of mild abrasive material such as prepared chalk. A small amount of soap may be added, if desired, to increase the cleansing action of the paste.
sweetening and flavoring materials as well as perfumes may be added such as sugar, honey, licorice root, menthol, thymol and oil of Wintergreen.
Finally the dentifrice may be given a pasty consistency by the addition of such materials as glycerine'or petrolatum.
As examples of two suitable mixtures the following may be given.
Example N 0. 1.
, Per cent.
Iodine 1-} Cholesterin 8 Prepared chalk Glycerine 2O Powdered sugar l6 Potass. citrate 1 Licorice root 12 lleinthol i of Wintergreen Thymol 6% Honey Application filed February 20, 1920. Serial No. 360,024L.
Example N0. 2.

Iodine 2 Cholesterin 12 Prepared chalk 9 Soap 10 Petrolatum Honey 6 Odors g. s l
While I have described my invention in a preferred form, I am aware that various changes and modifications may be made in the ingredients employed and the proportions and manner in which they are mixed without departing from the principles of my lnvention, and I do not therefore purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than as necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. A dentifrice including an antiseptic substance, a soft abrasive and cholesterin.
2. In a dentifrice, cholesterin and iodine, constituting together less than ten per cent of the whole.
3. A dentifrice including iodine, cholesterin and a soft abrasive.
4:. A dentifrice including cholesterin and a soft abrasive.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
J OHN P. SHEPHERD.
Witnesses:
