WILLIAM AULT, OF BREMEN, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 1 86,097, dated January 9, 1877; application filed June 13, [876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM AULT, of Bremen, in the coun ty of Marshall, and in theState of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, maklng a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a pump, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
. In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referrlng to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a side view of my pump, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
A represents the upper part or case of my pump, formed with two parallel vertical chambers or cylinders, B B. In the partition between the two chambers, near the top, is a passage, a, with the outlet-spout G, entering the same. E is the pump-stock, having a cheek-valve, b, on its upper end, which opens into a chamber, D. This chamber has two branches, D D, provided with check-valves d d, and inserted in the lower ends of the chamhere or cylinders B B. In each cylinder B is placed a piston or plunger, G, made hollow, and provided with a valve, f, on its upper end. The two pistons G G are, by rods h h, connected with arms is k, projecting in opposite directions from a rock-shaft, m, at the top of the case A. On one end of the rock-shaft m is secured a lever, I, which, by a pitman, J, is connected with a wrist-pin, 43, on a disk, K. This disk is secured on the end of a shaft, L, which has its bearings in boxes n a 0n the case A, and has a crank, P, on its other end.
By turning the crank P the disk K is rotated, and, by means of the pitman J and lever I, the shaft m is rocked in its bearings, operating the plungers G G, and causing a steady continuous stream of water to be discharged through the spout O.
The pitman J is adjustable at both ends, for the purpose of regulating the stroke and adapting the pump to the person or persons ordinarily using the same. The upper end of the pitman may be moved out or in on the lever I, and fastened in either one of a series of holes, at, in said lever. The lower end of the pitman may be moved farther from or closer to the center of the disk K by changing the wrist-pin 1; in either one of a series of holes, 3 in said disk. By these means the length of the stroke can be regulated as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is r 1. The combination of the two-chambered case A, with passage a and spout O, the chamber D, with branches D D, having valves 01 d, the pump-stock E, with valve b, and the plungers G G, provided with valves ff, and connected by rods h h with the arms k k on the rocking shaft m, all substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the plungers G, connecting-rods h, arms k, and the rocking shaft m, of the lever I, having a series of perforations, m, the pitman J adjustable thereon, the adjustable wrist-pin i, disk K, with perforations y, shaft L, and crank P, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of May, 1876.
WILLIAM AULT.
